After Three Weeks, Pelosi’s Anti-CIA Rant Finally Pushes Nets to Action

After three weeks of virtual silence, all three broadcast networks provided full reports last night (Thursday) about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s shifting story about what she knew about the interrogation methods used against al Qaeda terrorists, methods that liberals have decried as criminal torture. This morning (Friday), NBC and CBS also provided full reports, but ABC’s Good Morning America weirdly relegated Pelosi’s rant that the CIA “misleads us all the time” to a brief, 28-second report during the 8am ET hour.

That’s about as much time as the newscast gave to the rescue of a kangaroo caught in deep water off an Australian beach.

NBC’s Today was by far the toughest on Pelosi this morning, with co-host Matt Lauer opening the show by demanding: “What did she know and when did she know it? The CIA claims in a 2002 briefing, they told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi they were using harsh interrogation techniques. She says that’s a lie. So who’s telling the truth?”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Lauer also brought on Missouri Senator Kit Bond, who criticized Pelosi’s story that she was not told about waterboarding at a September 2002 briefing conducted after al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah had been waterboarded 83 times. “I have looked at the underlying materials, not only the records they kept, but the cables they sent out to the field and from the, what was apparently contemporaneous documents,” Bond declared, “It’s clear that they did tell her.”

On CBS’s The Early Show, co-host Harry Smith also took a skeptical line against Pelosi, asking pundit John Dickerson, “Nancy Pelosi seems to be digging herself into a hole. Is it a hole she can get out of?” Dickerson suggested Pelosi made a tactical mistake by adding the CIA to her list of evil bogeymen: “Usually, when you have one opponent, in this case the Republicans, you kind of stick to one. She’s added a second, taking on the CIA. Now the CIA's job, in some ways, is protecting itself, and it's very good at this.”

Last night, ABC, CBS and NBC all run fairly straight-forward reports on their evening newscasts, with only the CBS Evening News (with Jeff Glor filling in for Katie Couric) teasing the Pelosi story at the top: “Also tonight, Speaker Pelosi makes an explosive allegation....But what did the Speaker know about waterboarding, and when?"

It seems safe to say that the networks finally acknowledged the Pelosi story not because they felt her previous inconsistencies and potential hypocrisy were worth deeper investigation, but because the Speaker herself upped the ante with unsupported allegations that the CIA routinely lies or misleads Congress.

Here’s a little more of how each of the broadcast networks approached the Pelosi story last night and this morning, starting with ABC’s World News, which got to the story after items on the Chrysler dealerships closing and the shuttle's mission to fix the Hubble telescope:

CHARLES GIBSON: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi created something of a political firestorm today, accusing CIA officials of lying to Congress in 2002 about its interrogation methods. Did they lie? Here's Jonathan Karl....

JONATHAN KARL: Pelosi's words seem to directly contradict a declassified timeline of congressional briefings compiled by the CIA, which says Pelosi was told of the specific interrogation methods used on Zubaydah. Pelosi is also contradicted by the only other member of Congress at the briefing, Republican Porter Goss, who wrote recently, "We understood what the CIA was doing. We gave the CIA our bipartisan support." Although she says she was told it was not used, Pelosi acknowledged the CIA did tell her that they had legal approval for waterboarding.

# CBS Evening News, May 14:

Opening tease:

FILL-IN ANCHOR JEFF GLOR: Also tonight, Speaker Pelosi makes an explosive allegation.
REPORTER: You're accusing the CIA of lying to you in September of-
NANCY PELOSI: Yes.
GLOR: But what did the Speaker know about waterboarding, and when?

Excerpt from main report by Bob Orr:

REPORTER BOB ORR: In uncommonly strong language, Pelosi accused the CIA and the Bush administration of skirting the truth about the treatment of al qaeda terror suspects....But Republicans say Pelosi and other Democrats were fully in the loop. Between 2002 and 2007, CIA records show intelligence committee members from both parties received at least 28 classified briefings on harsh interrogations.

# NBC Nightly News, May 14, report from Kelly O'Donnell:

REPORTER KELLY O’DONNELL: Good evening, Brian. The Speaker has long been a strong opponent of waterboarding. And after new details came out that showed that she knew the technique was being used as early as several years ago, some of the her critics are wondering, what, if anything, did she try to do to stop it?

# ABC’s Good Morning America, May 15, 8:03am ET news brief (complete item):

CHRIS CUOMO: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is accusing the CIA of lying about its brutal interrogations of terror suspects during the Bush administration. Pelosi insists that in September 2002, the CIA told her point blank that waterboarding was not being used. By then, a key al Qaeda operative had been waterboarded 83 times. But, a CIA time line shows Pelosi had been told about its use of the controversial technique at that 2002 briefing.

# CBS’s The Early Show, May 15:

After a full report by Bob Orr similar to the one from Thursday’s Evening News, co-host Harry Smith interviewed CBS political analyst John Dickerson:

CO-HOST HARRY SMITH: Nancy Pelosi seems to be digging herself into a hole. Is it a hole she can get out of?

POLITICAL ANALYST JOHN DICKERSON: Well, it is a big hole. Usually, when you have one opponent, in this case the Republicans, you kind of stick to one. She's added a second, taking on the CIA. Now the CIA's job, in some ways, is protecting itself, and it's very good at this. And if she wants to, she can talk to the Bush administration officials who spent a good portion of the last administration fighting an internal war with the CIA. So she's in a tough spot.

SMITH: And the CIA, of course, came back and said, 'on the contrary, you knew exactly what was going on here.'

DICKERSON: That's exactly right. They said that she was briefed in September of 2002 about what was going on. And also they've said that, you know, that she should know -- I mean, she's -- what's important here is that she said that the CIA lied in September of 2002. They're not telling the truth now about what happened at that meeting. And then she made a broader claim that they basically lie regularly to the Congress.

# NBC’s Today, May 15. After the show opening quoted above, Matt Lauer interviewed GOP Senator Kit Bond, with the phrase “Pelosi Under Fire” as the headline:

MATT LAUER: Missouri Senator Kit Bond is the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence committee. Senator Bond, good morning to you.

SEN. KIT BOND: Good morning.

LAUER: Thanks for joining us.

BOND: Good morning, Matt.

LAUER: Let me use your own words about Speaker Pelosi here. You say, “It’s outrageous that a member of Congress would call our terror fighters liars. It seems that Speaker Pelosi only has one play in her play book - blame our terror fighters.” We’ve got a situation here Senator, where the Speaker of the House is saying the CIA lied to her. The CIA says, “We don’t think so.” How do we get to the bottom of this?

BOND: First, I think it, it’s a tragedy that we are seeing this massive attack on our intelligence community which has kept us safe. First they released the opinions which are put to all of our intelligence collectors at risk, and, and divulge their methods. But now the Speaker is going after the Agency and calling them liars. And I have looked at the underlying materials, not only the records they kept, but the cables they sent out to the field and from the, what was apparently contemporaneous documents.

LAUER: Right.

BOND: It’s clear that they did tell her.

LAUER: Well let me ask you this. She went on, by the way, she went further. She said but “They, they mislead us all the time.” As the vice chairman of the committee on intelligence, who’s received briefings from CIA officials, do you feel you’ve been misled in the past?

BOND: That's unbelievable! They come in to brief the, what we call “Gang of Four” and they tell us about very sensitive operations that are either going on or considered. We find out all the details. They let us know how it's developing and, and what's happened. And their job is to give us as much information as possible. And I've been in on quite a few of those briefings and found them always to be accurate. And of course I was not there when she was briefed. But that's been the practice I've seen.

LAUER: And do we need to put this into perspective, Senator, by going back to the time period of this briefing, September of 2002? We’re a year away from the 9/11 attacks, the country's still reeling from that day of terror, and wondering why more wasn't done to get to the bottom of that plot. So might information on interrogation techniques and waterboarding cause less outrage then than perhaps it might among some Democrats, and even Republicans today?

BOND: Clearly, when you read the cables that went back to the field, the people who were briefed were asking about the kind of information that was received. And they wanted to know what information had been received. They were not saying, “Hey, don't do waterboarding or any other of the enhanced techniques.” They said, “Are we getting enough information?” That was the focus at the time, and clearly, we were all concerned about a second attack, and I believe information stopped at least one, if not several, attacks in the United States.

LAUER: Real, real quickly, Senator. Do, do you thin-, is, is, is Nancy Pelosi right when she says, even if she had protested there would be nothing she could have done about it at the time. Couldn’t she have demanded hearings? Or would that have been out of line?

BOND: Oh, that's flat wrong! We have seen, we've been advised of things that were contemplated that we thought were wrong and when we objected to them, they dropped them. But you can, you can enlist other people, you can call for a, a closed hearing of-

LAUER: Right.

BOND: -of the House or the Senate, protected by the speech in debate clause. You can cut funding. There's a whole list of things, and she did none of those that, that I'm aware of.

LAUER: Alright Senator Kit Bond. Senator thanks for your time this morning.

BOND: Thank you.

NBC was toughest on Pelosi

NBC was toughest on Pelosi because NBC is basically Obamas Dept. of Media. He'll use NBC to pound Pelosi, keeping his hands clean, and getting her forced out and Hoyer put in her place.

Obama clipping her wings

This is just simple politics. Nancy's hubris in mis-estimating how much O needed her caused a mis-calculation in her Bush bashing torture game.

Now O is shutting her down, tossing her under the bus, and using Panetta to hammer the nails in her coffin.

Look for a much more compliant, O-friendly, speaker of the house in the very near future.

Just politics folks, as it was all along.

Obama just out played her, game, set, and match.

The media is just finishing out the last bits of the plan, now that Nancy's own rope is well extended for self-hanging.

i couldn't agree more.

bho has already displayed a willingness to discard party loyals who are no longer of use to him.  madam speaker fits this discription to a tee, as does hillary.  is she next?

Kit Bond has done an excellent job this morning...I mean excellent.

Anybody catch him on MJ early this morning...for me early anyway, the show comes on at 4:00a.m. it was great, and hilarious at times.

ha ha

I'm loving the haikus over at HA.

Me too

I'm kind of conflicted. I saw something like this coming in '06 when she came out with the 'glass ceiling' and 'culture of corruption' schpiel after the dems gained control of the house. Well; the house of cards is crumbling and I (we) saw it coming. The conflict comes from the fact that this is the state of the union. Could we not just find more morally decent people to run our country? Can honesty and decency be restored? I pray it will happen. In the mean time... Na Na Na Na Boo Boo. LMAO.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave"!!!

Hey, Jdly~

I hear ya, brother.

I'm still in a state of shock that Pelosi just came right out and said the CIA lied. Not only that, but they often lie. I can't imagine -- even in a panic -- that she would not have been able to stop that from flying out of her mouth! ^_^ During her press conference I was honestly thinking: "Lady, what the heck are you thinking? Run, run, run away now -- before it's too late!" ;)

Yeah, She picked the wrong

Yeah, She picked the wrong agency to finger.  We used to say that the most dangerous place to be was between a CIA man and a member of the press when the CIA man finds it politically expedient to violate a non-disclosure agreement and leak like a sieve.

I am guessing that within minutes of Pelosi saying what she did in her presser 25 CIA guys were sprinting for the WaPo door....

Now, she could have said what she wished about the DIA, NSA, and FBI and gotten away with it.

Who to leak to?

But if the CIA has a leak that they want the old media to print, will the old media accept the leak if it is about a democratic? If it will damage the messiah, even indirectly? Remember, Newsweek magazine sat on the Monica Lewinsky story.

Yeah, that is why the story

Yeah, that is why the story is taking six weeks to flush out.  The press would not desire to frag Pelosi but now that she is damaged goods she is expenable.

How exactly do they get the

How exactly do they get the ball rolling with this?

"This just in!  CBS News just learned that three weeks ago House Speaker Nancy Pelosi..."

In-friggin-credible.

Unfortunately from their point of view this is too big to simply ignore and doesn't appear to be going away.

Also, they are probably waiting to see how Obama handles it.  If he throws her under the Bluebird, then all of a sudden it will be a huge (Huge mind you) story so they can support their beloved Dear Leader.

Cape-can't figure out which

Cape-can't figure out which of the following is going on:

1.  Pelosi is an embarrassment to the Dems, thus on the Supreme Leader himself.  Also, this bad press (along with the rest) could hurt in 2010 and threaten his current Congressional carte blanche.

2.  A power/ego struggle over who's going to be boss, who's more Marxist, who's done more to advance Socialism in America....

3.  Pelosi isn't part of The One's inner circle, so her actions could be out of synch with theirs on a variety of issues, thus gumming up the works for them-common ideologies not withstanding.

Perhaps a combination of all three?

Former Speaker of the House Pelosi....

Pelosi is a goner.  The dems and the MSM will throw her under the bus now that she has become a liability.  Did you see her trying to tell a convincing lie during that press conference?  It was pitiful!  Somewhere, I can just picture 'ol Slick Willy watching that performance and thinking to himself, "what an amateur!".

Pelosi Made a Fatal Mistake

Pelosi made the fatal mistake of NOT knowing that Barack Obama was the 'ONE' not the Democrats - like Barack Obama stated "I won".

Brit Hume reported December 16, 2008, for Fox News that Pelosi was delivering warning salvos to the powers-to-be:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not holding back when it comes to making her wishes known to the incoming administration. The Politico newspaper reports Democratic insiders say Pelosi has “’set parameters’ for what she wants from Barack Obama and his White House staff — no surprises, and no backdoor efforts to go around her.”

Pelosi is in talks with incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Sources say she wants to know when the administration has contact with rank-and-file Democrats — and why.

One insider says Pelosi is “not going to allow Obama to triangulate her.” Another added, “There is going to be tension…she wants to know what they are up to.”

Re Fatal Mistake

I have either forgotten that or missed it the first time. Sounds like the Princess though. Who was it that said last week she was 'mean as a snake'? If she talked like that to Rahm or the Bamster that might have sealed her fate. The Bamster is an Alinskyite, which means his priority is accumulating and keeping political power.

Makes me wonder what the relationship is between the Bamster and Dingy Harry. This might cow Harry just a bit.

Help bring Pelosi Down

Hi Guys, I spent 4 hrs yesterday figuring out how to file an ethics complaint against Nancy Pelosi. We have drafted a letter, all you have to do is copy and paste into email with your info and sign and use the email address shown... We started this on http://giovanniworld... please help us get many more complaints....We call it "Bringing Down The Hag" Thanks Steve Janus
To: elizabeth.horton@mail.house.gov.
Dear members of the Congressional Ethics Committee,
I, (your name here), residing at ___, phone # ___, e-mail ____, would like to open an Ethics violation case against the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. I believe she has lied to the American public, and to Congress and to the C.I.A. Repeatedly, she has stated an untruth — that she was not informed and knew nothing about waterboarding of prisoners. She has changed her story 3 times now, the latest on May 14, 2009. I believe her lying to the American people, Congress, and the C.I.A. has put me, my Family, and our nation at a greater risk for terrorism. With all due respect, I ask that you investigate this matter before more damage is done to our great nation and more American lives are put at risk. I acknowledge that section 1001 of title 18 of United States code (commonly known as the False Statements Act) applies to the information provided. Sincerely,

Please pass it on

I'm having a "plastic shredder" moment - sorry

Let's see - a full scale war is launched against the American people - thousands massacred in NYC, a jet hammered into the Pentagon, another one targeted for the White House, there are Anthrax attacks and quite possibly dirty nukes in the works - and we want to PROSECUTE people on OUR SIDE??? What do you think they were doing, yanking citizens off the street at random, just for kicks like Saddam's evil offspring? Were our guys putting people in plastic shredders, feeding them to dobermans and making them crawl thru boiling asphalt? Anyone remember "Salmon Pak" [sp?] - the underground terror training center found in Iraq that harbored an entire 747 fuselage? How about the thousands of chemical weapon suits? With all of this going on, and we get phony stories from the MSM about flushing korans down toilets and how we're abusing monsters who openly state they will kill as many of us as possible if they get away... If these people were in charge during WW2, we'd all be goose-stepping now - or made into lampshades.

Pelosi didn't lie intentionally

All you talking heads have it wrong.  Pelosi's botox injections have finally overloaded her face and travelled to her minsicule brain.  This has caused an medical imbalance that has rendered her incapable of telling the truth on anything.

Every new lie or cover-up keeps getting more extreme.  What's next?  Dick Cheney was holding a shot gun to my head?  Carl Rove used some Vulcan mind erasing procedure on me?   I caught mono while in Syria kissing up to my friends?  Dick Cheney and Carl Rove have more  trustworthiness in their little pinkies than what Nancy Pelosi has in her whole body.

LOL. "Extreme" is right. I am honestly embarrassed for the woman. It's beyond foolish. If she is not sweating bullets at this point, she really should be. Maybe stop talking, lady?
