To commemorate the Media Research Center’s 20th anniversary this month, we’ve just published a special expanded edition of our ‘Notable Quotables’ newsletter with more than 100 of the most outrageous, sometimes humorous, quotes we’ve uncovered over the past 20 years. Earlier this week, I presented quotes showing the media’s sympathy towards totalitarian communism and hostility towards Ronald Reagan and other conservatives.
Today’s installment: The media’s love affair with Bill and Hillary Clinton. For 15 years, liberal reporters have made themselves looked like the sycophants they are, as they made excuse after excuse for the Clintons’ moral failings even as they applauded the couple’s supposed greatness. But perhaps no one looked sillier than Dan Rather on May 15, 2001, when the then-CBS News anchor was asked on Fox’s The O’Reilly Factor if he thought Bill Clinton was honest.
Video (0:41): Windows (1.26 MB), plus MP3 audio (163 kB).
BILL O’REILLY: “I want to ask you flat out, do you think President Clinton’s an honest man?”
DAN RATHER: “Yes, I think he’s an honest man....I do.”
O’REILLY: “Even though he lied to Jim Lehrer’s face about the Lewinsky case?”
RATHER: “Who among us has not lied about something?...I know that you consider it sort of astonishing anybody would say so, but I think you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things.”
I’ll let you decide whether Rather was more or less adoring than former Time magazine reporter Nina Burleigh, who made this suggestion in July 1998 during the Lewinsky scandal: “I would be happy to give him [Bill Clinton] a blow job just to thank him for keeping abortion legal. I think American women should be lining up with their presidential kneepads on to show their gratitude for keeping the theocracy off our backs.”
Some of the other quotes that show the media’s affection for Bill and Hillary:
“I must say I was struck by the expanse of their chests, though. They may have to put out their stats.”
— Newsweek reporter Eleanor Clift on the new Democratic ticket of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, CNN’s Inside Politics, July 9, 1992.“If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, we’d take it right now and walk away winners....Tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her and we’re pulling for her.”
— Dan Rather to Bill Clinton at a May 27, 1993 CBS affiliates meeting, talking about anchoring with Connie Chung.“Hillary Rodham Clinton will define for women that magical spot where the important work of the world and love and children and an inner life all come together. Like Ginger Rogers, she will do everything her partner does, only backward and in high heels, and with what was missing in [Lee] Atwater — a lot of heart.”
— Time correspondent Margaret Carlson, May 10, 1993.“She’s ecumenical but prefers Italian and Mexican. The President fixes her eggs with jalapeno peppers on the weekends....Valentine’s Day at the Red Sage restaurant. Even at a romantic outing, the President can be the date from hell, talking to everyone but the girl he brung....Finally alone, they have ‘painted soup’ and the lamb baked in herbed bread. They exchange gifts and touch each other more in two hours than the Bushes did in four years.”
— Time reporter Margaret Carlson, June 1993 Vanity Fair.“His sturdy jaw precedes him. He smiles from sea to shining sea. Is this President a candidate for Mt. Rushmore or what?...A single medley of expressions from Clinton may be worth much more, to much of America, than every ugly accusation Paula Jones can muster.”
— Los Angeles Times television writer Howard Rosenberg reviewing Clinton’s Inaugural Address, January 22, 1997.“There is a simple alchemy to their relationship: she’s goofy, flat-out in love with him and he with her. ‘They don’t kiss. They devour each other,’ says one aide. He needs her — for intellectual solace, political guidance and spiritual sustenance....They see themselves in almost Messianic terms, as great leaders who have a mission to fulfill. Her friends speculate that the Bible gives her a historical context for what she’s going through. ‘There’s a lot of consolation, guidance and refueling that comes from reading about centuries-old calamities,’ says a friend. Given the storm they’re in, it’s a source of inspiration they’ll need.”
— Matthew Cooper and Karen Breslau writing in the February 9, 1998 Newsweek.“I’m endlessly fascinated by her [Hillary Clinton]....She’s so smart. Virtually every time I’ve seen her perform, she has knocked my socks off.”
— CBS’s Lesley Stahl, as quoted by Gail Shister in the December 8, 1999 Philadelphia Inquirer.

They're still doing it
October 24, 2007 - 09:14 ET by mattmLast night a local newscast teased an after-the-break story with the words "One of the most popular Democrats ever is in town." --- Of course, referring to B.J.
They didn't say, "Former president" much less "Impeached former president..." or "'Embattled' former president..."
The MSM might as well be run by the Clintons.

October 24, 2007 - 09:15 ET by ThalpyWhat a Goober! We could always rely on Dan to come up with such nonsense, and I suppose, with his attempted resurrection, we might have Dan to kick around some more. I hope not.

October 24, 2007 - 10:17 ET by okiehawk44Margaret was probably right -- I'll bet the Clinton's do touch all the time -- like when she hits him high and then low -- when she kicks him in the stones -- when she sews him up in the bed linen and "touches" him with a broom stick -- when she... Well you get the picture I'm sure.

They exchange gifts and touch each other more in two hours than the Bushes did in four years.” Margaret Carlson
Margaret, exactly how the hell do did you know how often the Bushes "touch(ed) each other"? And what makes you think the Clintons' show of affection was genuine?

He, of course, is a member in good standing of the biggest liars club in creation: The MSM, liberals and democrats; Bill & Hillary Clinton, Co-Chairman and Chairwoman. Oh, I'm sorry, I must have lost my un-PC head;;;;Co-Chairpersons.

This stuff is absolutely
October 24, 2007 - 11:52 ET by misterbee241This stuff is absolutely sickening. Unbiased, objective media? I dont think so.
But I remember everybody going gaga over John F. Kennedy. I remember more than one woman saying "I'm voting for him because he's soooo handsome." And the media back then loved him too - they kept his dalliances and his medical condition under wraps. So it stands to reason the next generation of "journalists" would fall in love with Bill, that lovable galoot.
This is a bit off topic, but my elderly aunt is a dyed in the wool democrat - she thinks Roosevelt is a diety. Any, when John Jr was killed she said it was a shame because he was the best of the Kennedys. I told her that was because John Jr's mama kept him away from the rest of the Kennedys.
We all lie....
October 24, 2007 - 11:56 ET by ForeverOnTheRightand color things to some degree everyday, so the experts say. But I don't think these "common" everyday lies compare to Slick Willy's lies about Lewinsky. The lies Billy boy put out about her where a deliberate cover up. The "common" lies we tell everyday most often do not have the same consequence nor are told by a sitting President. The Lib-left have had infinite forgiveness for Bill, but don't tolerate even the smallest misstep from the Right, what crap is that. The Right will discipline or punish someone who deserves it, then forgive them, if they repent. But won’t give someone a “blank check” for infinite forgiveness.
Where Is The Barf Bag?
October 24, 2007 - 13:07 ET by Wildcatter1980After reading these quotes, I almost lost my lunch, these so-called journalists being SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sickly-sweet in their fawning over the Clintons.
I challenge anyone who thinks the mainstream news (ahem!) media is
bias-free to read these quotes and then defend such a point of view.

Mr. Clinton - millions died, and you?
October 24, 2007 - 14:20 ET by Gary HallWhat's missing in the "Notable Quotables" is in fact, the missing question - a real question the MSM never did ask Clinton, and never will:
Mr. President. Today, instead of the usual pandering that we in the media usually provide you, promoting your legacy and all that, I'd like to take travel down a different path today; one which truly reflects back on the wreckage you left behind, notably in Africa; Africa? Mr. President, is your current effort in Africa really all about your guilt?
Before you answer, Mr. President, please consider. After the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which 800,000 were slaughtered in 3 months time, we came to slowly learn that your administration was at best complacent in responding the that humanitarian crisis as it developed. Many charged more than that, but we gave you space. Following that, you made a promise to the world in saying, "Never Again." Immediately after Rwanda, the conflict moved next door to the DR Congo, were estimates are that from 4 ½ million to 6 million have died from civil war and genocide - the largest loss of life in a single conflict, since WW II. There are millions of refugees. Of course, during this period of time, Sierra Leone and numerous other horrible events were also taking place. "Blood Diamonds" comes to mind - but well save that for you and your friends and financial supporters in the mining business for another day.
Did, "Never Again," Mr. President, actually mean, Again and Again?
And.
We in the mainstream media have always stooped to the lowest level of ethics possible, and have been blaming President Ronald Reagan for what we perceive he did not do (or say - actually) back in the early days of HIV/Aids. We, in the media, have not only hated him for not doing more, in our opinion, but we have invested years of effort in doing our darn best to make all Americans hate him as well. But it turns out, Mr. President, that it was surely you, that as president truly understood the plight of Africa under the unfolding march of HIV/Aids to a pandemic, as we would soon learn - and you, alone, who would not lead.
Perhaps it is the perception of our dear friend, David Corn of "The Nation," who challenged you back in 2002, as you set out to make amends for your eschewal of being presidential on the issue, while you were president. Corn wrote in a piece titled, Too little, too late -How many times is Bill Clinton going to apologize to Africa?, that, "The prevailing view was, these people should die quietly." Then, Corn posed a question to you, wanting to know why. He summarized the situation as:
David Corn's answer for you was, "A cynical guess at Clinton's motivations: AIDS in Africa, it doesn't poll well."
Mr. President. Considering all of this, and much more could be added, when asked about the horror of Africa, how can you play into this game of our praising the ground you walk upon and our molding your presidential legacy, without doubling over in anguish and falling onto the floor with the wrenching pain of the guilt you have been carrying. It's really all about your swaggering ego, is it not?
Mr. President. Put that finger down, it's just a question. Have you not been questioned before?
