Slate Editor Does Not Buy Obama Gay Marriage 'Conversion'

By P.J. Gladnick | May 10, 2012 | 10:42

"Do You Believe Obama Actually Changed His Mind About Gay Marriage?"

That was the question posed in the title of a column written by Slate editor David Plotz. And here is his succinct answer:

I don’t.

In sharp contrast to the misty-eyed hallelujahs offered up by most of the mainstream media in the wake of President Obama's "evolution" to the point where he announced his support of gay marriage, Plotz remains extremely skeptical about his supposed conversion:

President Obama is no more hypocritical than the next politician—especially if the next one is Mitt Romney—but he certainly is a hypocrite. So while I’m thrilled to celebrate his support for gay marriage, as little as it means legally, I’m irked by his all-too-eloquent conversion story.

In his interview with ABC News, the president recounted a change of heart on gay marriage. He said his thinking had evolved “over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors.” He talked of having observed members of his own staff “in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together.” He referenced conversations with his wife, who agrees with him. And of course he invoked the troops: “those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage.”

As you can see, Plotz claims there never was any conversion:

Do you believe that—through exposure to these people—the president has actually changed his mind on gay marriage? I don’t. He has always supported it.

Plotz also brings up Obama's declaration that he supported gay marriage as far back as 1996, only to disclaim it later for political purposes:

Oh, and then there is the fact that he said he supported gay marriage, unequivocally. In 1996, as a state senate candidate, Obama wrote and signed a survey declaring: “I favor legalizing same sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” When he ran for president, Obama denied support for gay marriage while endorsing civil unions, and circulated an obviously bushwah story disavowing the 1996 survey, claiming someone else had filled it out. (No matter that Obama signed it.) Liberal Democrats accepted his cover story—and his obvious hypocrisy—because they knew that supporting gay marriage would have been politically fatal to his 2008 prospects.

Plotz wrote his story yesterday before the real reason for Obama's "conversion" became apparent only a few hours later: it's all about the Benjamins. Right on the heels of Obama's gay marriage announcement, Team Obama sent out an fundraising email soliciting campaign donations based on his "evolution" on this issue.  I wonder if Mr. Plotz will have something to add about "converting" for bucks.

There is no conversion

involved. Obama is an amoral democrat. It is only natural for him to embrace this.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

Of course there was a conversion, misterbill. He said in 2006 (or 2008, I can't keep his flip-flops straight) that his rejection of same-sex marriage was formed by his Christian faith.

Now suddenly he's decided the teachings of his "faith" were chopped liver.

The question is: what caused the conversion?  My guess: political calculation.

Seriously?

Is there anybody left on this planet that actually believes anything that comes out of the white black's mouth? He bent over for the gay vote. Period. Pun intended.

Exactly!!

I commented elsewhere on Obama's need to "personalize" everything and to embellish everything with specific details to make things more poignant.

It's reminiscent of Bill Clinton, who, no matter what he was pitching, always created someone who  approached him while he was travelling, with exactly that issue and begged for his help!

mb....this isn't even leading from behind

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 11:14am.

AB Stoddard put it brilliantly:

Before his hastily planned ABC News interview Wednesday afternoon, in which he announced his belief that same-sex couples should be able to legally wed, Obama’s water-treading wimp-out on the highly charged issue was making him appear to be as cynical, calculating and cowardly as his adversaries describe him. The president who has done more to help the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community than any president — ever — was opposed to any efforts to ban gay marriage, but couldn’t support it either, because he was “evolving.” It wasn’t leading from behind, it was hiding in a closet.

Submitted by skolbrother on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 11:30am.

You can bet your sweet bippy that he has supported same sex marriage all along. The message changes when political expedience demands it. This years message is yes I support it..but it's up to the states.....REALLY ? The guy who wouldn't sign a federal bill that would save a babies life in case of a botched abortion ? ...The guy who want's NATIONWIDE employers, insurers, & church entities who self insure to pay for BC, abortion drugs & sterilization ? Are you fricking kidding me ! We all know damn well he wants this supported Federally....He brought up "a states issue" to cover his butt with the independents.....Any guess on his evolvement after the election ?

Just another campaign scam

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 12:18pm.

Just another campaign scam designed to appease his useful idiots. Even though obama is probably on the down low he cannot support homo marriage in reality, his islamic masters would not be pleased.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

Dear Barry,

Back to the economy, you vacant-staring mouth breather.

Enough of your phony evolution.

Time for you to bend over and grab your ankles so we can kick you all the way back to the loving arms of your pal Bill Ayers and your Racist "Reverend" White.

You are making John Kerry look good.

With Barack

Submitted by nolefan2 on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 6:26pm.

Obama, it is, always has been, and always will be about the MONEY and his re-election. He says whatever is necessary to get elected and I believe he'll do anything, and I mean, ANYTHING to get re-elected. If he IS re-elected, I fully expect him to do anything necessary to stay in office permanently. Call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever you choose. If we don't put him out of office in November, we could very well be stuck with him for many years to come. In that case, RIP, United States of America.
