Nancy Pelosi Bailout Bill Failure: A Tale of Two Timeses

  • Bookmark and Share

This is a tale of two Times. One Times, the one in New York, pretty much provided cover for Nancy Pelosi's highly partisan speech as a cause for the failure of the bailout bill to pass in Congress. The other Times, the one in London, gave an accurate analysis on how Pelosi's partisan rant caused the bailout bill to fail. First we have the New York Times, in an article written by Jackie Calmes,  placing most of the blame for the bill's failure to pass on "evil" Republicans (emphasis mine):

From the White House to Congress to the presidential campaign trail, the principal players did not rally the votes they needed in the House. They appeared not to comprehend or address in a convincing way an intense strain of opposition to the deal among voters. They allowed partisan politics to flare at sensitive moments.

If there was any doubt that President Bush had been left politically impotent by his travails over the last few years and his lame-duck status, it was erased on Monday when, despite his personal pleas, more than two-thirds of the Republicans in the House abandoned the plan.

See, it was those wascally Republicans. Blame them despite the fact that Pelosi allowed 40 percent of her own Democrats to also vote against it. All she needed was just 12 more Democrat votes for it to pass. And the insultingly partisan speech by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? Calmes wants us to believe that instead of her being incredibly undiplomatic at a time when Pelosi needed to rally support for the bill, the speech was just used by Republicans as an excuse not to vote for the bailout bill:

Representative John A. Boehner, the House Republican leader, became emotional as he urged his party to muster the will to approve the package. After his members overwhelmingly voted against it, he tried to shift the blame to a partisan speech delivered on the floor just before the vote by Representative Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker.

Ms. Pelosi delivered the Democratic votes she had promised, but could not muster enough of them to avert a defeat that could long be remembered.

The assertion here is that Pelosi did her part by delivering the "Democratic votes she had promised." Left unsaid was the okay she gave to her Democrat allies that they could vote against the bill because she had enough Republicans, which she alienated with her partisan attack speech, lined up to vote for the bill. For the rest of this story on the failure of this bailout bill to pass, Nancy Pelosi's name is removed to the New York Times memory hole.

To get a much more accurate analysis on why this bailout bill failed, we must hop across to pond where the UK Times presents a much less biased picture detailing the incredible lack of basic political skills by Nancy Pelosi which helped lead to the bill's failure to pass:

It was perhaps the costliest ad lib in political history, 90 seconds of ill-judged, ill-timed bile that helped to kill off any hope of consensus on Capitol Hill.

Your humble correspondent believes the "ill-timed bile" lasted for quite a bit longer than just 90 seconds but I won't quibble over this otherwise accurate point.

That was the charge against Nancy Pelosi after Congress’s rejection of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan yesterday, a rejection that Republicans blamed directly on her aggressive and overtly partisan speech shortly before the vote.

As Speaker of the House and second in line to the presidency after Dick Cheney, the most powerful woman in US political history has never been one to keep her thoughts to herself. Even at a time of national crisis she can be relied on to have a dig at President Bush.

But as she deviated from her prepared remarks on the floor of the House yesterday, Ms Pelosi appears to have gone too far. At a time of heightened sensitivities all around, she deployed the C-word — Clinton — and helped to give a group of Republicans the excuse they were waiting for to walk away from the bailout.

Ms Pelosi started off by stating the obvious: that $700 billion was a “staggering figure”, a figure that had prompted a “very informed debate on all sides” of which she, as Speaker, was duly proud.

But that was as far as her evenhandedness went. She was not going to let this moment go without making clear who she felt was to blame for this whole mess.

Picking up on the size of the bailout package again, Ms Pelosi said: “Seven hundred billion dollars: a staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country, policies that were built on budget recklessness.

“When President Bush took office he inherited President Clinton's surpluses — four years in a row, budget surpluses on a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus. And with his reckless economic policies within two years he had turned that around and now eight years later the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an anything-goes economic policy, has taken us to where we are today.

“They claim to be be free-market advocates when it’s really an anything-goes mentality: no regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out. Those days are over. The party is over in that respect.”

She added: “Democrats believe in a free market. We know that it can create jobs, it can create wealth, it can create many good things in our economy. But in this case, in its unbridled form as encouraged, supported by the Republicans — some in the Republican Party, not all — it has created not jobs, not capital, it has created chaos.”

Kudos to the UK Times for publishing Nancy Pelosi's actual words. Something the New York Times failed to do in its analysis on why the bailout bill failed.

Roy Blunt, a House Republican whip, said that party leaders had thought that they had a dozen more votes going to the floor than they actually had but there was “so much partisan discussion in what should have been a bipartisan effort to solve this problem for the American people”.

Ms Pelosi herself, predictably enough, rejected any suggestion that she was to blame for the defeat of the bailout. “You don’t vote on the speech, you vote on the Bill,” an aide said.

And there is a time to be diplomatic and a time to let loose with partisan rants. When you are the Speaker of the House trying to whip up votes from the opposition party, it just does not seem the proper time to let loose with a divisive partisan rant. Something the New York Times conveniently overlooked but which the UK Times accurately pointed out as a cause for this bailout bill's failure to pass.

Is Pelosi too stupid to be speaker?

Nonsense Paloosa

To call her stupid may be cruel

She can't help that she's a fool

It's not that she wants to be a  rat

It's that she's got the brain of a gnat!

What kind of fools ever

What kind of fools ever voted Pelosi and Reid to head the party.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

PJ: a truly masterful post.

PJ: a truly masterful post. Thank you.

Oh, Nancy!

There really is a simple explanation for all of this.  Nancy Pelosi is, to put it kindly, not very bright.   No, the elevator doesn't quite reach the top floor.  It's like watching a non-swimmer flailing in the deep end of the pool.

Queen Bee at her best.

Yeah, Pelosi, just speeches -- words that don't matter to anyone.

What a dumbass fool she is; and worse yet, she thinks we'll believe anything she says during her desparate explanations. This woman needs to be fired --- now.

Let's set the record straight on what happened yesterday

1. This is representative democracy in action.  Enough Americans did NOT want this bill to pass, enough of them contacted their congressman or congresswoman.

2.  Enough congressmen and congresswomen are up for releection in November, enough listened to their constituents.

3.  Democrats want this Bill to pass because they started this mess, Republicans want this Bill to pass because they did not do enough to prevent this mess.  Both sides want to appear pro-active with your money.

4.  While it should not be seen as a deal-breaker, Pelosi's speech did not help her cause and she needs to watch her trenchous mouth.  Bad-mouthing the president who actually came up with the inital plan is not the way to garner more votes.

5.  I have YET to hear in 18 hours any resemblance of ANY of the above in ANY news stories.  This has very little to do with the presidential election and more to do with the collective will of the American people, once again something the MSMs are more than willing to spit on.

Right On!, Cap

I was saying right after the vote how proud I was of the American people for making their voices heard, just as we did during the Immigration hearings. Pols and Media are complaining about strong arming and vote counting, and arm twisting, but nary a word about how we the paople actually feel about this.

This shouldn'd be Let's Make A Deal, this is let's do what right by and for the American people.

. . . and that's all I have to say about that.

I don't know...

What better way to remind Republicans what the basis of the bill really was:

"They claim to be be free-market advocates when it’s really an anything-goes mentality: no regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out. Those days are over. The party is over in that respect.”

It seems to me that maybe Madam Pelosi didn't want the bill to pass either, but was stuck with supporting it no matter her convictions? That is after all what is being promoted...the largest and most blantant 'golden parachute' in history.

You want change? Give me a dollar.

Is Nancy Pelosi experienced enough...

...to be two heartbeats away from the Presidency?

And they want to talk about Governor Palin inexperienced?  Seriously!  Incompetent doesn't even begin to describe Madame Speaker if she couldn't wait until the votes were counted before her screed.

Good on the Times of London to report the whole story.  On the whole, it's a damned fine newspaper.  I read the online version every day.  I wish other American newspapers would follow suit.  Maybe then they wouldn't be suffering the decline in readers and advertisers.

A Tale of Two Pelosis

"I accept this gavel in the spirit of partnership not partisanship, and look forward to working ... with you on behalf of the American people. In this House, we may belong to different parties, but we serve one country."  Nancy Pelosi - Acceptance Speech in the House January 4, 2007

Ah, yes....

That is truly, as Michelle Malkin would say:

Snort-worthy!

This is proof of the

This is proof of the arrogance of Her Speakerness.

She talks about biparitsanship when she needs Republicans to save her, but even knowing that, she simply couldn't refrain, even in one very important speech, from using the old standby failed Bush economic policies.

And then she expected Republicans to ignore everything she said, (you don't vote on the speech; you vote on the bill) and fall in line behind her anyway.

Arrogance, thy name is Pelosi.

What can you expect?

When you're elected by leftists because you spew hate toward the right, you will keep your job as long as your spewing it.

She is dense, simply not very bright. That's evident every time she opens her mouth.  But you don't have to be bright to be elected... just wealthy, at least, that's true when your constituancy is as far left as hers.  All you need is money and speeches blaming the right for everything wrong in this world.

I think it is obvious that

I think it is obvious that she is too stupid to be speaker.. Look at congress' approval ratings, its becasue of her.

My guess is, she is going

My guess is, she is going to look back on her 9% approval rating time as "the good ol' days" soon.

The reason it couldn't go any lower before is because that is about the percentage of people who live off the federal government (not counting those who work for the federal government) [i.e., scavengers and parasites vs those who give an honest days work in service].  It was in their self-interest to have Dumbocrats in power.  Now even they are understanding that fiscal irresponsibility is going to hurt them big time.

“But maybe you obviously have a better memory about that."- Wolf Blitzer

Not only was the "speech"

Not only was the "speech" (rant) partisan, it was also "misleading."  The budget surpluses of Clinton were a temporary fix -- they were not sustainable in the long term.  The only sustainable solutions to the budget deficit problem are either reform of mandatory spending, or to set in place social policies that can support it (and increased taxes won't be enough, either).

A Confederacy of Dunces.

On another forum someone posed the question, "How much is 700 billion dollars?" Put it this way, it would more than double the currency in circulation inside the USA and cut it's worth in half. By all accounts that is a three day old fish that the monger won't even wrap in paper, because it will stink no matter how he tries to cover the stench. We need to shore up the dollar.

We've been told how bad off the markets will be if we don't DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW! If we didn't act by last Wednesday ... last Friday ... Yesterday! Let them explain then, if the crisis is so immediate, why does congress have time to rest for Rosh Hashana?

Perhaps, as the jewish holiday suggests, we should take time to reflect and think through that which troubles us most, reflect on what we can do as individuals to improve our fate. It's not a time for panic, but, for discipline and restraint. Discipline in ourselves and by those who we've given our voice to as our representatives in congress. Pelosi and Bush have proven themselves fools. After all ... "fools rush in."

Burning Down the House

There was a Youtube video that really concisely explained this whole financial debacle.  It was yanked, supposedly for "copyright violation" (probably because it lambasted the Democrats).  I made the mistake of not downloading it when I had the chance.

If anyone has a copy of it, I would appreciate it.

Everyone knows that Pelosi

Everyone knows that Pelosi is not the sharpest tool in the shed. For those that did not know, she has now demonstrated how ineffective she is. To call her stupid would be kind. She is a moron who reads Kos and HuffPo to get her advice on how to win friends and influence people. Well, she sure influenced some folks yesterday.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

I'm glad the bill was

I'm glad the bill was defeated, and I hope that nothing like it ever becomes law.

And I think it was RD Helm who, a while ago, expressed a sentiment that I am currently experiencing: hopefully, the House GOPers who revolted against this bill did not do so all because of some speech Pelosi gave. The speech was crap, but if it was the reason that the house GOP voted the way they did, then there are no conservative-minded people (who have a brain, at least) in the GOP who are currently representing us in federal government.

"My morality is your morality."

This makes me

Actually, I think Nancy's speech was really repressed anger over her low books sales.

The Country Deserves So Much Better Than This

There are times in the history of our country when we needed a great speech and a great speech was delivered.  Yesterday was one of those times when we needed a great speech of reconciliation and Pelosi dropped the ball big time.  It couldn't have been more pitiful.

Pelosi is stuuuupiid.

When so many politicians were holding their nose and voting for the crap sandwich, why would she make it stink worse?

Many didn't want to vote for the bill.  Her extremely partisan rant told the Republicans that had signed up to it that they were her vassals and that she could do anything.

With bipartisanship like that, who needs enemas?

Money

Hmmm   The little investors ran and the big investors are buying up stocks at a bargin price.

Sounds like a Democratic ploy to buy the Presidency to me.

Thay sure can't win it honestly.

Pelosi should be watersking. Not for sport but for trolling for Aligators.

She is a complete descrace. Since the Dems took control of Congress.

Energy costs doubled

housing bubble busts

Banks failing. Remember Chucky boy cause the run on the one in Cal. That started the mess.

Their bailout was 140 Billion of our hard earned money to a Democratic Org. ACORN.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH BUSH AND THE WUSSY REPUBS?

Sorry for the capitals but I am screaming mad!!!  Why does this President let the left get away with placing everything wrong in the world on his shoulders???  Why won't he fight back???  Even my lib friends (who are few) know that the Dims are responsible for Freddie and Fannie!

Why won't these people tell the American people (who are too dumb and lazy to read!) who is responsible???  Are they all just a bunch of wussies???  Damn their cowardice.  Give me some leaders with cojones!

HIGHER Standards

Time and time again, Pres. Bush has strived to stay above the partisan fray. He swallows an awful lot of political, CONSERVATIVE pride when working from the Oval Office. Get him into some fun, like say the Corresondents Dinner, he shoots like the true Texan he is.

He is currently compelled to take the high road. He knows that politicians, like pigs, love to fight in the mud. He has no intention of tracking the mud into the White House, especially since it's being decorated for the Christmas. He doesn't want the extra cost of cleanup!

neoliberal-speak

"...placing most of the blame for the bill's failure to pass on 'evil' Republicans"

Neo-liberal Democrats don't believe in an objective "good" and "evil."  They recoil and spew green vomit when they hear such "naive" labels applied in the realm of politics.  To them, one is either "self-actualized and chemically balanced" or he/she "suffers from "medication-deficiency" brought on by "childhood trauma."

The congressional vote

Is this document being posted?

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll674.xml

It objectively states that 95 democrats voted against the bailout.

Now clearly after the 12 republicans "broke ranks" (in other words served the people) and voted against the bill Pelosi could have gone to 12 of these democrats and said "hey guys we really need your vote", unless course she wanted the bill to fail in order to play partisan politcs and allow the MSM to blame McCain for the whole thing.

Gee I wonder....

Pelosi, Frank, Dodd and Reid have been pointing fingers...

At everyone but themselves!

I'm sorry but after that incredible bias partisan speech Pelosi said I feel every republican that voted for that bill is signing off and agreeing with what Pelosi said.

We all know that it was because of the subprime loans, thanks to the likes of the above listed people including Obama. Failed subprime mortgages is the true reason behind this bailout!

If I was a republican in the House I would simple state - if you want the Republicans to agree to any bailout - Dodd, Frank, Paulson and Cox need to accept blame for not doing their jobs and resign!

btw - Great blog - thanks for posting!

There was a theory...

that I heard back in my college days about people who keep rising, rising until they reach the job they are unable to perform.  This is where they stay until they inflict so much damage, they are finally and mercifully removed.  Pelosi has been called the worst "Speaker" in the history of "Speakers" so thankfully, in spite of being protected by the leftist main stream media, her days are numbered.  Jim Webster

Sure would be nice if Sheehan would beat her...but since we know we aren't going to have that fun, we can expect Steny to take her place...maybe.

Which would take a mighty big miracle...lol.

Democrats BLAMING everyone.

This is a clear case of the Democrat Leaders Pelosi include that TRIED to get this done as quickly as possible so that OBAMA would get credit for the passage.

The were planning on creating a plush slush fund for ACORN and LaRusa AND were called it. ACORN has been a key player in getting KING OBAMA elected in Illinois, US Senate, and not for the presidency.

The fix on OBAMA'S election to the White House was done by the Democrats in POWER, the DNC and the Media.

We are still finding out about THE KING.  A huge chunk of  campaign is allegedly coming from small donations under a 200 done by credit cards. NO WAY OF TRACKING.. and lost in the shuffle... especially because OBAMA HAS YET to give TRANSPARENT information of his funding.  It is also noted that there are a LOT of donations that can be traced to overseas locations.  HE IS NOT REPORTING THIS AS WELL.

This was a DEMOCTARIC bill.. that was done behind closed doors... just like next years budget of about 1 Trillion dollars was done by OBEY'S direction and he bragged about the fact that the taxpayer would not get to review/see until after it had passed.

Final comment.. the Democrats have an axe to grind with the Republicans, and will do anything or say anything to insure that they have their GOLDEN BOY. in the white house.

One version of this bill also requested a new national debit of 11.5 TRILLION dollars.. Currently it is at 9 Trillion... SO the dems were building a 2.5 TRILLION cushion into this bill.
