Liberal Writer Saw Biden as a Disaster Last Year

Now that Barack Obama has chosen Joe Biden to be his running mate, it will be interesting to see how some journalists will distance themselves from their own scathing opinions of Biden in the past. One such case is that of Jonathan Chait, The New Republic editor, who was very downbeat on Biden in a Los Angeles Times article published on February 4, 2007. Of course, back then it was "safe" to be honest about Joe Biden since it looked like his presidential bid was going nowhere. The very title of Chait's article, "Joe Biden’s just a barrel of gaffes," explains the problems the Obama campaign is going to have with the new vice-presidential pick. Back then Chait was very blunt about Biden's problems as a candidate:

...Biden’s charming cluelessness was on display in a recent ABC news interview. The famously verbose senator was asked to state in 25 words or less why Democrats should nominate him. His response was 45 words. I suppose that, by Biden’s standards, coming in at just under twice his allotted length counts as a victory of sorts.

Chait was only getting warmed up in his devastating appraisal of Biden:

In addition to his uncontrollable verbosity, Biden is a gaffe machine. He ran for president 20 years ago but had to abandon his campaign when it was discovered that he had plagiarized speeches from a British politician, substituting in key details to make the story his own.

In his latest effort, Biden wasted no time subverting his already microscopic chances. On the day of his announcement, he mused about Illinois Sen. Obama: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”

It will be interesting to read Chait's opinion of Biden first gaffe as designated VP candidate when he called Obama, "Barack America." Chait also slammed Biden for his Indian American gaffe:

And, of course, last summer Biden attempted to endear himself to an Indian American supporter by telling him that in Delaware, “you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” Not only was this an offensive line, it didn’t even make any sense: The observation, familiar to anybody who watched a comedian on cable television 15 years ago, is that Indian Americans are the only ones who work in convenience stores, not that they’re the only ones who shop there. The man can’t even keep his condescending cliches straight.

And now the money quote from Chait in his overall assessment of Biden (emphasis mine):

Biden looks as if he’s the product of a laboratory experiment designed to create the world’s worst presidential candidate. If the Obama gaffe doesn’t knock him out of the race, something else will. I doubt he makes it to Iowa.

How about as the world's worst vice-presidential candidate, Chait? Now that Biden is Obama's running mate, it will be interesting to see if and how Jonathan Chait and other liberal journalists will back away from their own previous highly critical opinions of him.

Coming home to roost

These columns once critical of Biden will go the way of a less than desirable Wikipedia entry.

I agree. I hope the NB staff is busy caching and saving their tripe.

A medical fact.

But it isn't 'pc' to discuss the reality of his ailments.

eh

There's also been the same kind of 180 among Republicans in the media concerning John McCain. It would take HuffPo about five seconds to compare Sean Hannity from six months ago to his radio show now and find some equally embarrassing contradictions.

It's a draw for both parties and not a surprise to anyone, so I don't see much sense in doing it.

I disagree Candance - It's no secret that conservatives are

settling for McCain and would rather have had a different candidate. What Hannity and others are doing now is comparing him to Obama and he's much better than Obama in almost every way.

This may have been an opinion column, but no one in the MSM sang Bidens praises like they are now and they are supposed to be neutral. Hannity is not. He's a conservative and will obviously support the more conservative choice like most of us.

The media tell people over and over how McCain has problems with conservatives and they should be saying that Biden isn't a favorite of liberals.

The difference is that

The difference is that McCain was never really attacked quite like Obama and Biden were. Sure, conservatives bad mouthed him, but they bad mouthed his more liberal-moderate policies, the very things that are going to draw in the independant vote. And like Dee said, the pundits aren't kidding themselves on McCain, Hannity will still say that McCain was the most liberal GOP nominee, but that won't stop him from then saying "but, he's ALOT better then Obama." I mean, the criticisms leveled against McCain by the other nominees could actually help him with the more moderate vote!

Here's an even more devastating critique

...of Obama's choice of running mate.

The Rainbow Candidate and the Plain Vanilla Veep

Yet Biden has never been in the Senate leadership, never been elected by fellow Senate Democrats to any post beyond what seniority has required.  In his community, the Senate, Biden has never been Democrat Floor Leader or Democrat Whip or Democrat Conference Chair or Democrat Conference Secretary or Democrat Policy Committee Chair:  He was never been anything that required his fellow Senate Democrats to pick him out for a special honored position.

And the money quote:

Obama picked a colleague in the Senate, the most exclusive and elite elected body in the world, and he managed to pick a senator who actually makes Obama look good.....That is not so much evil or mad as it is pure Obama:  The essence of banality.

He also picked one of the

He also picked one of the most "establishment" Senators in that body. You don't hang around the Senate for 35 years by making waves and going against the grain.

And Obama says Oh, about that "Change" thing and the "new kind of politics".....Never mind.

Blonde - that article is great! Thanks for sharing

It cracked me up and it's so true. I love in the beginning how he says of Obama "He has become so dull, that McCain looks exciting beside him." That is some feat! It's true too.

The quotes you picked out were priceless.

Dee & mb

Glad you liked it (and sorry, mb, for lifting your "money quote" line).

I also liked the part about Reagan & W's VP choices....men with stellar careers and mega accomplishments.

Other than a pseudo sense of "gravitas" (I'm beginning to despise that word)...what does Biden bring to the ticket, other than the ability to deliver Delaware?  Granted, the man can deliver a gaffe.  Okay, I answered my own question, there.

And he probably doesn't offend Michelle too much (well, less than Hillary does, LOL).

Let the real games begin.

How about as the world's

How about as the world's worst vice-presidential candidate, Chait? Now that Biden is Obama's running mate, it will be interesting to see if and how Jonathan Chait and other liberal journalists will back away from their own previous highly critical opinions of him.

Oh my...they already have....seems the leftist in all venues of the media are having short term memory problems...let alone some politicians who were calling for him to apologize ect...we haven't heard much from them either....

Now it seems the Next President is A-Okay....according to Barack Amerika...

...and if he gives his thumbs up...that's all that matters.

Plagiarist Joe

Biden lifted a speech from someone else and presented it as his own. That says it all about his character and his intelligence. Now we've got two sad sacks running on the Dim ticket. God help us.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

That photo is great!

That photo is great! Captures that look he gets when he seems to be about three minutes away from dropping his pants and singing, "I'm a little teapot...."

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?
