Happy INDEPENDENCE Day!

It just happened to fall on July 4. I celebrate those brave patriots that decided being ruled by an unconcerned monarch from a long way off wasn't the way to live.
This day is for the Founders, not the crown-kissing, rumpswabs that would still have us part of the UK.
(any similarities in the above statements to persons now living are purely coincidental)

Made me think of this site, which I bookmarked long ago. Speeches of Ronald Reagan. Oh how we need the Gipper right now.
I know many here loathe HBO, but they do produce many fine series, and John Adams is one that is worth watching....if you get HBO on your cable/dish, you can stream it for free on your computer at HBO.GO. You'll need your TV provider account number to sign up, though.

I still tear up when I hear him speak.
I was in north central New Jersey during that 4th of July in 86. We had considered driving up to see the fireworks from the Turnpike but decided not to. Listening to the radio later I heard the traffic had become stopped because of people do exactly what we had thought about.

The first time viewing it, I braced myself for some "dig", humm it never came... 'Bout time to view it again...
I'm planning on driving 40 miles to view and hear some fireworks, in Lahaina....If the 4 th. happened during
whaling, whale season, it would have been banned years ago.If the carbon haters get an extension, fireworks will go the way of the coal burning power plant.
Be sure and have a dangerous 4 th and please blow something up. I can't drive to the next state over and get the good stuff...heh heh...

You should fly to Cali & go see Begrunt.
He has a cannon he shoots off....LOL, the neighbors always threaten to call the cops, to which he replies "I am the cops!".
Kind of nasty overcast here....in SoFla we shoot the fireworks off the beach...best way to see it is from offshore, I can see them from Miami to Palm Beach. But not tonight, I'm cooking several 3" thick rib eyes tonight. Yummo! Wish you were in my ocean.

FYI , B you are closer in brutal air miles to Begrunt than I am.... California you get a ticket for a sparkler out side of a designated know smokin area.

I got a big kick out of that. The death of Andy Griffin overshadowed that in the state. It was more of a national story. There were two other veto overrides, the budget and the Racial Justice Act. Two years ago the Commicrats passed a bill that would allow minorities to have their death penality case reviewed based on racism. It turned out to be one big SNAFU. That bill straigthened out the mess of the Commiecrats. Dumpling has the lowest rating of any of the other 57 governors. She vetoed the budget because the GA didn't spent enough money.

Here he is, King Bloomberg. 16 ounce soda jerk, why? Because it's needless sugar and he wants to fight obesity. So here he is, announcing, and joking about, a hotdog eating contest where contestants shovel hotdogs into their throats at breakneck speed, for no other reason other than to win a prize and be named hot dog eating champion.

I had a conversation with an Indian girl at work. She's 27, has lived here about 6 years. Her husband has a green card and is also from India.
She talked about how things are in her home city of Hyderabad. Not very known, yet in recent years has jumped to be a major city in India. Lots of Information Tech companies there. But she says when she goes home to visit, after a couple of weeks she is ready to leave. She says she's just not used to that anymore. Not that she doesn't love her home country. She does, but she says that its just so different than here. She's been here 6 years but it sounded to me like she's felt that way for some time, having gone back to visit several times.
Her mother came here to visit not long ago. Her first time in America. She said her mother would have loved to stay, and not just because her daughter is here. Her mother said she just felt it was peaceful here, in a suburban VA area. She just really liked it.
I asked another Indian co-worker about a year ago, what did he like when he came here. What did he notice, what sticks in his mind as far as what early experience he liked. His immediate words......."the freedoms." It's not that he was oppressed in India, as they are a democratic society and he comes from a middle to upper-middle class family. But there was just something different that he felt and experienced as he made his way in America.
Very interesting conversations. If you work with anyone from another nation, just ask them a simple question about what was their early impressions upon arriving here. You'll enjoy the feedback.
Excellent observations, Greg

When we made our trip through Central America, almost everyone we spoke with who was a fluent English speaker had spent considerable time in the US (illegally for the most part, which of course, is an unspoken thing).
They all had incredible things to say as well....their impressions and whatnot, as you've described.
Sometimes it is very hard to see what is right in front of you. It takes the lens of another person's culture to make you understand what it is we have. And what we are on the verge of losing.

Celebrating.........
Submitted by GregE on Wed, 07/04/2012 - 8:21pm.
............what was, more than what is. Celebrating how we started, not where we've fallen. Leave "present day" out of it on this day. We have a base, a foundation on which to stand. That's saying much more than most nations.
I view it as the kid who grew up in church, then as he got out on his own, strayed from any thought of his faith. A few years later, maturing, he finds it again, something he likely would not have gotten back to had he not had that foundation laid many years before.
The more people know, the better off we'll be. That is something that has to change because too many people, know far too little about our nation's foundation.
I have gotten very very interested in our history and founding documents in the last 3 years or so, much more than ever before. And there are many people out there like that. I believe that our Founding documents and principles are in discussions moreso than ever in the last 100 years.
Just remember that everyone wasn't in favor of the American Revolution. I have read the number at 25%. Most were apathetic, against it, or loyal to the British.
I didn't do anything special today with any group of people. But I did pull out a copy of the Declaration of Independence I had sent to me from Hillsdale College, and made it a point to read it slowly and carefully, thinking about each of the lines in it. (you have to, you can't just blow through it, as the language of the time won't allow you to do that and understand what you just read)
