How the cow ate the cabbage

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 06/09/2012 - 10:14am.

Allow me to set this up. Last week after the NASCAR Nationwide race Kurt Busch was asked a question by a reporter for The Sporting News. Busch told him if he wasn't on probation , by NASCAR, he'd kick his arse. That got Busch supeneded for tomorrow's race and placed on probation until 12/31/12. His car owner, James Finch, said on the radio the other day he was going to have a come to Jesus meeting on Tuesday with Busch and was going to telll him how the cow ate the cabbage. I have lived in the south all my like and i have never heard the phrase "how the cow ate the cabbage." I looked it up. It means "to tell the person the unvarnished truth, even if the person would rather not hear it."

All these years we have been telling liberals how the cow ate the cabbage and they still don't want to hear it.

Rick,

This was a favorite of my Mom's as we were growing up. There was nowhere for us to go to find out what she meant, but we soon learned based on the context in which she used it. We soon knew it usually meant trouble for us, or that she was waiting for our 'side' of the story. Great memories, thanks.

Sometimes my side of the story didn't mean nothing. I had 3 sisters that liked to lie.

Having been raised around a farm, I knew that if a cow did eat a cabbage it would blote them, That's why the saying made no sense until I looked it up.

I'll Have Another out of the Belmont

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 06/09/2012 - 10:37am.

Even he would have won the Belmont and the Triple Crown he would still never be the horse that Secratariat, Seattle Slew or Affirmed were. The biggest loser in this is NBC Sports. They had planned on huge ratings because a horse had a chance to win the Triple Crown. I didn't plan on watching all the hoopla anyway. I was going to tuun over there at post time and watch the race and that was it.

College World Series super Regionals started yesterday. Soem games start today. The SEC has 4 teams in it, Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina and Florida. After my Heels got embarassed last week by St. John's it left only 2 ACC teams, The Wusspack and the Criminoles.

NASCAR races at Pocono tomorrow. This should be a lot better race. The track was paved and the speeds are up over 7 mph.

For the golfers there is the Fed Ex St. Jude's Classic. Next week the US Open from San Fransico. If San Fran Nan is there I will not watch because all they'll do is talk about her.

I can't wait!

On a sad note, the President of the University of Florida, Bernie Machen, has tendered his resignation effective in 2013. The upside is that Rick Scott, our governor, is heavily involved in the replacement process, and I hope we'll get another chief executive with conservative credentials.

The Gatas went into this thing ranked #1. I don't think the Wusspack has a chance.

Let's hope that they get another conservative. Our governor will be looking for a job come January. If you hear her name even mentioned start raising hell. You know she is a UF grad. I figured if Obama won she would be placed in his administration somewhere.

If anyone saw Tim Poe on America's Got Talent,

Submitted by UpNorth on Sat, 06/09/2012 - 11:32am.

and were moved by his story, this is for you.

He's a fraud, a Poe-ser, if you will.  This Ain't Hell has been all over him, since the good people in Tim's unit, the 114 Transportation Company of the Minnesota National Guard threw the BS flag on his story that he was wounded by an RPG in the Stan.

See here, here, here and here.

He claims a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and an armload of other decorations, none of which he earned, other than a NDSM, GWOT medal and a couple of others.  He claimed a Combat Infantry Badge, and has never had the MOS of an infantryman.

And, The Sniper was all over the Poe-ser also, here and here.  The first one is hilarious, a take-off on Edgar Allen Poe(how fitting), and The Raven.

It iw bad enough to lie about one's service but don't lie about the awards. I was infantry and never earned a CIB or EIB. I never saw combat. I don't have a lot of awards other than markmans in rifle, sharpshooter on a .45. I couldn't hit the braod side of a barn with a pistol.

Even Howard Stern was outraged at this ass.  I'm pretty sure that NBC's reaction will be, "Nothing to see here, move along, move along".

It's just amazing that, in this day and age, a Poe-ser like this thinks he can get away with something like this.

Here's something fascinating

Submitted by Blonde on Sat, 06/09/2012 - 12:47pm.

And Math really isn't hard (unless your name is Baraka Obama).

Here is a list of the top donations to political parties from 1989 until present.

As they say, follow the money. What struck me was the "breakdown" of what kind of organization is donating to each party.

Just do a quick glance and see if you can catch my meaning.  Unions, bankers, insurance, medical, auto, oil, transportation.  It truly is fascinating.

Oh, the evil Koch Brothers are down there in the middle of the all-time list.  So much for that democrat talking point.

I am going to keep this list.....it's another fine bit of ammo with which to shoot down idiot liberals' idiot arguments.

Speaking of campaign donations...

...here's a nice little article from AP that could probably be a subject for a Newsbusters analysis:

http://news.yahoo.com/gop-groups-top-democrats-tv-spending-far-130628921...

Notice the very subtle language used. "Earlier this year, Obama's campaign decided to dip into its own treasury to respond to commercials". You see, Obama's using his own money for campaign spending (according to AP). On the hand, Republicans are several times identified as using "outside" money. So Barack is using money he actually earned???? Maybe from sales of his books???

And to think I used to fall for tricks like this, or at least not consciously notice them. Nothing like being enlightened

Submitted by ricklail on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 11:13am.

LA seems to me to be a big military state like here in NC. You have Fort Polk and Barksdale Air Force Base as far as I know. I almost wound up at Fort Polk one time but the orders got changed at the last minute. Nothing wrong with there except the heat and humidity. The heat and humidity here in eastern NC is bad enough.

No ka oi, I've been to

No ka oi, I've been to Singapore 3 times - what a place!!! It is well-organized, clean, orderly, well-kept, and that is in a place that has over 4 milion people on an island smaller than the one that you or I live on!!! And it is multi-racial and multi-religious too, without any of the in-fighting. It' quite an impressive place.

And, of course, the first time I went there, I had remembered all of this hogwash about it being a 'police state', and a place where you'd get arrested for chewing gum and caned for spraypaiting a roadside wall - like some stupid American kid did a number of years ago. I think the main thing that I figured out was that they ENFORCED their laws, and everybody KNEW what the laws were, so they didn't bother with BREAKING them!!! Imagine that!!!

I even looked in the Singapore phone book under 'attorneys' - which is a theory that I have, being that the number of attorneys a place has is proportional to the crime and legal status of the place: more attorneys=more crime, more litigation, more lawsuits, more BS. Hey, it's just a theory coming from the peabrain of a simple-minded country boy, OK?? Anyway, for a place with 4 times the number of people here in Asia/Hawaii, the amount of pages of 'Attorneys at Law' in the Singapore phone book was probably the same amount of pages as you have on Maui!!! I'm not kidding!!!

I'm Doomed!

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 2:41pm.

I had a doctor's appointment Friday and, while we were reviewing my records, I noticed that I am suffering from a new malady, to wit: "Chronic Nicotine Disorder." That's just how it is listed in the record.

Great, so, not only am I suffering from Crohn's, Rheumatoid Arthritics, systemic blood pressure problems, an irregular heartbeat, and, possible, a thyroid deficiency, I now suffer from unrelated "chronic nicotine disorder." Thanks, Doc, it's not like I didn't have enough to worry about before.

By the way, the doctor asked me what it would take to get me to stop smoking, and I told her, point blank, "DEATH!" With all the rest of the health problems I am suffering, smoking is the least of my worries.

Even death may not get me to quit. I put in my will a request to be buried with a pack of cigarettes so that, when I am resurrected, I can enjoy that first cigarette without having to wait.

What words are used to describe a diagnosis eventually is tied to a diagnosis code (ICD) used for billing submittal to an insurance company for reimbursement. Physicians can use any words they want for their charting, but eventually someone has to match the physician's diagnosis to a standardized code in order to bill properly, ie get paid the appropriate amount.

With computerized medical records, a physician can select the diagnosis and code simultaneously from a list provided by the software vendor. These diagnostic codes can be bizarre and are disliked for the sheer number and hair-splitting wording. To top it off, these codes may change yearly, with some deleted and others added. You need to dedicate someone to learn and then teach these changes to the staff, which costs money and time away from other duties.

A small example of ones dealing with smoking, and not all the codes for smoking, can be seen here.  Note that tobacco use can be described as Use, Disorder, or Dependence in just these few examples of coding.  Also note the politically correct coding for second-hand smoking.

The question is

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 3:47pm.

The question is, why the need to "diagnose" smoking as if it's some type of illness? I'm not receiving any treatment for it, and none of existing heath "issues" are related to it, so why include it in my records as a "chronic disorder?" (Is it "chronic" because I refuse to quit?) It's not like they don't ask if I smoke every time I see them anyways. I know that doctors tend to treat smoking as if it's a disease, a disorder, but it's not. It's an affliction. And it's self-afflicted to boot.

This will be a lengthy post concerning some of the words used in Medicine to describe observations and investigations and some of the effects of smoking.  I'll just touch on a couple of things and leave the rest for a conversation with your physician. Also, I will speak in generalities since I have not examined you or seen your medical records.  You need to talk with your physician for specifics relating to you.

The medical record is used to record observations and findings. Tobacco use is a finding that has medical importance since it is a major reason for health issues. The words used take on an importance for the intended reader, such as insurance companies requiring specific wording for specific amount of reimbursement as well as to decrease the risk of misunderstanding. Standardization is the desired outcome so that wherever a patient or physician goes, the words used will mean the same things to the intended audience. The ICD codes are a standardization. As such, physicians, or whomever does the coding, must eventually conform their diagnoses to the standardized ICD codes if they want to be reimbursed properly for the work performed.

What word is used in describing tobacco use can be a little frustrating as you can see from the link I gave in my earlier post. The ICD codes are a way to be very specific about a finding or diagnosis, and getting more specific all the time, although some would say convoluted (or worse). Some physicians might say "tobacco use" while others say "tobacco abuse". You could even say "dependence" or "addiction", depending on how you define those terms. The ICD codes are a way to standardize diagnosis or findings, including chronicity and type of use as in your situation.

Why "Nicotine" is specifically used instead of cigarette, cigar, pipe or smokeless tobacco could be as a shorthand convention, ignoring there are 4000 chemical entities found in tobacco, of which over a hundred are known to be harmful to humans. "Chronic" implies long term. Without any other modifier such as "Ex" or "Former" or "Quit", the chronic also implies still current "nicotine" user.

The use of "Disorder" certainly can be argued for or against. Medical jargon is prone to the politically correct. "Disorder" sounds better that "abuse" or "addiction", at least to some, just the same as using "dependence" instead of "addiction". In the end, physicians are forced to certain naming conventions, especially with the electronic medical record, and those conventions may be changed to increase precision or to please the Liberal politically correct mindset. One example of a more recent change is from Sexually Transmitted Disease to Sexually Transmitted Infection. More precise but possibly more politically correct.

Maybe this is where you are having issue - something called a disorder - which has an unintended consequence in the imagery it creates in the patient's mind. I understand your point. Disorder does sound unusual for the purpose since it can represent something for which the person has no control over, such as Attention Deficit Disorder. It could be that since tobacco use can lead to addiction, the people responsible for the ICD code wanted a more universal and gentler sounding word than addiction or abuse (which has also been used to describe alcohol use in medical records). Maybe the naming convention will change again for tobacco users.

As to the effects of tobacco use and your previously mentioned medical issues, while High Blood Pressure may not be chronically induced by tobacco use - a point some argue for various reasons - your Crohn's may flare more and require more or stronger medications due to tobacco use.

Some background before discussing other potentially related effects.

Oxygen is carried from the lungs to the body's tissues and organs by a protein called hemoglobin found inside red blood cells. Physicians check the amount of hemoglobin in your blood to look for signs of anemia and other blood related issues. Chemicals/molecules from tobacco smoke interfere with hemoglobin taking up oxygen from the lungs. For instance, carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke binds to hemoglobin preferentially over oxygen, ie carbon monoxide gets VIP status over oxygen even though oxygen is needed by the body. Since there is less oxygen riding the red blood cell in your circulation, there is less oxygen available to be given to tissues and organs. This hypoxemic effect can be as simple and short lived as dizziness like that seen from smoking too much or in a naive smoker (first timer) or slow wound healing (wound repair needs oxygen!), or, long term as with premature wrinkles around the mouths of smokers or general or specific dysfunction of various organs in the body.  It could also contribute to a smoker experiencing potentially life-threatening Altitude Sickness quicker and at lower altitudes.

Concerning your issues, since there is less oxygen available per red blood cell in smokers for a period of time during and after smoking, there is the potential for causing the heart to have to beat faster to circulate more blood cells in order to make up the difference. (The cardiovascular system may also respond by narrowing blood vessels to move blood faster even if heart rate does not increase. This is a mechanism that does acutely increase blood pressure in smokers, though the effect should only last minutes).  Anyone with cardiac issues is at risk for potentially harmful and life threatening problems resulting from a heart that is stressed by the effects of smoking - including the issue that smoking increases your cholesterol which can result in narrowing of blood vessels - including coronary arteries feeding the heart muscle.  Narrowing of arteries by cholesterol deposits increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, or an embolism to other parts of the body including lungs, legs and organs.  (Embolisms are a chunk of cholesterol plaque build-up in an artery that breaks free, travels downstream in the circulation, and then plugs up a vessel that has a diameter small than the chunk of broken off cholesterol plaque, like a stopper in a sink drain.)

Since I don't know your medical condition beyond what you've written, the potential for exacerbating your current medical issues is real and worth discussing with your physician to understand better than my general points which may or may not apply to you entirely.

Last, but not least, asking about tobacco use each time you see you doctor "kills two birds with one stone", so to speak.  First, because tobacco use cause significant morbidity and mortality (disease and death), it is proper practice to inquire in order to identify and then try to decrease the patient's risk of problems now and in the future.  Studies have shown that a physician just mentioning quitting smoking leads to more attempts at smoking cessation than otherwise.  Second, and probably so prominent because of the first, asking about tobacco use satisfies a data point requirement in order to bill at a certain E&M billing code level (different than ICD codes which are diagnostic and form part of the justification for the E&M code billed).  So, asking about tobacco use is a win-win for everyone - patients, the medical facility providing care, and the insurer who wants to identify preventable problems early to try to control costs.

I know this is a lot to read. There is more that could be discussed, especially how things may apply to you specifically.  The important overall point is for you to understand your own health issues as best as possible, including discussing tobacco use effects on you and planting the seed of smoking cessation.  Talk with your physician.

That's a presumption, strat.

"Tobacco use is a finding that has medical importance since it is a major reason for health issues."

That's a presumption, not a diagnosis. I don't have any smoking related "health issues," all of my medical problems are auto-immune related, as all of my doctors have told me, and it's inherited, as I have told all of my doctors, but I have been diagnosed with a "disorder." I know why that is, doctors actually believe it IS a disorder, a disease, an illness. You, apparently, agree with them, even though you, yourself, admit that you have absolutely no idea as to what my medical condition is, other than what I have told you. I don't care about how it's coded, I care about being falsely diagnosed with a medical disorder.

Every time that "disorder" entry in my medical records is read by a doctor, they want to "treat" me by offering patches, pills, and even hypnosis. I want that to stop. If I wanted to stop smoking, I would do so. Since it's not making me ill, even after 30 years, what difference should it make to them if I smoke or not? But, you see, I have this "disorder," so they're not going to stop trying to treat me for it. I'm getting tired of it. As I constantly remind the doctors, smoking is the only vice I have left. it does surprise me that in a town that is heavily influenced by unions - so much so that they were able to get Reid through his rather lame efforts during the last election - there are not more comments about a potential conspiracy. If he lost in such a manner after making comments against a Republican Presidency you know the Internet would be flush with the 'Fascism of Republicans.

Yeah, coming off six straight wins and being up by three in the middle of the game, I figured they had it in the bag, so I went and took care of some errands.

I actually got invited to the game, but didn't go because the weather was supposed to be really bad.

Glad I skipped it.

Help me out

Submitted by GregE on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 9:13pm.

I like Marco Rubio, but I simply do not believe that he's Constitutionally eligible to be VP. For me, I say let's not go down that road if it's questionable. I never hear or read of any conservative talkers or other media-types questioning this at all. Not even Mark Levin, which leads me to believe all is ok with it. But I haven't heard the explanation on why its ok, because it's never questioned when Rubio's name comes up in VP discussions, so no one provides explanation to an unasked question. I have done a little research on the 'net but I can't reach a conclusion, AND it seems that in serious and civil discussion on the matter, there is not a conclusion. Legal interpretations go both ways.

If I am definitely wrong, I would LOVE to definitively know I'm wrong so I can put this question aside for myself. Anyone have definitive information on the subject?

This is an interesting site.

Good post. I've read a lot about this, too. I could give you a bunch of links, but I could never give you anything definitive because it is debatable -- and I'm also certainly no expert on it. But I share your concerns, Greg. I don't think Rubio should qualify, as unpopular as that statement may be.

I could lay out the info about how the Founders actually didn't specifically define "natural born citizen," and why they logically had no need to do so by the very terminology they used (I'd explain all the intricate thinking of many great minds from what I've read -- but trust me, nobody wants me to get into all that!). But I agree with the arguments I've heard/read because they make logical, practical sense to me. Of most importance for me, there is much written about the basic reasoning of the "natural born citizen" clause chosen carefully by the Founders because they wanted NO divided (country-based) loyalties. They wanted the President and VP to absolutely, thoroughly have America/Americans as the #1 focus and priority -- complete, undistracted, non-conflicted and undivided loyalty to our country. I do believe that was the intent.

Hence, as much as I like Rubio, I believe that to be President or VP, both parents should be born in America (not just citizens for a certain length of time) -- along, of course, with the nominee being born here (with the military service on foreign base exception because they are there based on duty to OUR country, not as a home-base country in which years of cultural influences/loyalties could be at issue).

It's just what I believe -- I think it makes good sense to draw a clear line. And if had been, well, think who would not be in office now? And the case could sure be made for divided loyalties there!

So whether it's a conservative I think would make a great President or VP -- or a Dem running -- I stand by my belief that "natural born citizen" should be held in strictest sense of the parentage as well. I know, it's not PC.
