Open Thread: 'Republicans Now Believe Romney Can Win, and Democrats Believe Obama Can Lose'
Time's Mark Halperin published a piece yesterday with a rather shocking opening sentence.
"With five months until Election Day, Barack Obama faces a grim new reality: Republicans now believe Mitt Romney can win, and Democrats believe Obama can lose."
Are you starting to feel that way?

I have never doubted that with the right campaign obama could be defeated.
Obama could have been defeated in 2008 but no one campaigned against him. McCain’s campaign slogan could have been "I'll take the job if obama decides he doesn't want it".

I don't know what the next chapter of life will be for him, but he's in his very early 50s. He'll be interjecting himself in a community-organzing way for the next 35 years and have the background of US President on his resume. Marxist too, but that will be left off.
Heck, I wouldn't put it past him to run again in 2016 or later.

I hope we never hear from the Socialist scumbag ever again after January 20, 2013. But I have a sneaking feeling he'll run again. He's a different type of candidate than other one termers, the most obvious difference being the color of his skin. The far left will just break the seal on a fresh pack of race cards, and it'll be "he only lost because of racist conservatives" blah blah blah

Guaranteeing that Obama will run again in 2016 for a second nonconsecutive term might be a little extreme, but I'll bet you a shiny Sacagawea dollar that if he loses in 2012 there'll be a major effort by many in the Democratic Party to get him to run in 2016. But there's not a chance in hell he would be the nominee--with the teeniest caveat that if it were another Bush v Gore cliffhanger this November with Obama winning the popular vote but losing the electoral count by a whisker, there's an outside chance he could be renominated in 2016. But that scenario playing out is EXTREMELY remote.

Even if Romney does win, I'm still with Levin on his concerns about him. I remember a few nights ago he was talking Ron Leavitt (sp?) and the association with him. I mean if we are only able to strike down part of Obamacare, what in the world is Romney going to replace it with?
Strike Down Part or All of Obamacare
Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 06/08/2012 - 12:24pm.
The Supreme Court may be able to "strike down" part or all of Obamacare, but they won't replace it with anything. Romney can't strike it down. He may be able to issue an "exemption" to all 57 states, but I'm not even sure if that's legal. Just because Obama has been issuing exemptions, doesn't mean it's legal. Is there language in Obamacare that allows the President to issue exemptions?
Congress can strike down Obamacare, but they will need a strong majority in the Senate to do that. I think some Dems will go along with repeal of Obamacare, if they can save face by keeping some of the provisions such as 26 year old "children" remaining covered and some other things that are popular.
It's important to get Obama out of office for a number of reasons. The IMPERATIVE reason is to get him out so he can't damage the Supreme Court and other federal courts with his nominations. In the end, the most important decision of our lifetimes is about to be issued by the Supreme Court. If they declare the entirety of Obamacare unconstitutional, it will hopefully signal the end of this Progressive nonsense that we have been subjected to over the last 20 years. If they declare just the mandate unconstitutional, things are still up for grabs. If they allow the whole thing, then we have to pick ourselves up off the floor and keep fighting, but many will just throw in the towel.

I would love for nothing but to put Obama on the unemployment line in November. I do fe, like many here, that Romney is the man to make the changes we need right now. But what I am concerned about is what's happening within the party of supporters of Ron Paul. I watched his son Rand Paul throw his and his fathers' support to Mr. Romney on Hannity last night. Rand even said that he would campaign on Romney's behalf. I also read an article today in the DC Caller about that support and then read the very angry and belligerent comments. Most saying Ron Paul or no one.... even some saying they rather vote for Obama instead of Romney. Having said that, his supporters don't appear to have any intention follow suit in the Pauls' endorsement of Romney. I can't believe that any conservative would choose another 4 years of Obama then support the party's nominee. This potential splintering within the party could cause serious problems come November. That to me is alarming! To have another 4 years of this administration will damage America beyond fixing. My grandchildren and their children will never know the America I love and that my ancestors fought for since the American Revolution. Why would we do this to ourselves? Why?
I saw the tone of the comments as well

I think that Romney is going to have to let both Ron Paul and Rand Paul speak at the convention.
I hope Ron Paul assuages his bruised ego to the point that he encourages his followers to suck it up and vote Romney. But his son's endorsement indicates that Ron Paul won't run third party, thankfully.

I think he is going to have to do more than that. Romney is going to have to make some type of statement supporting or evening charging Ron Paul with an investigation of the Fed and at least give some credence to the idea that the US has been involved with other nations too much. He won't have to go as far as Paul on National Security but in order to reign in some support from Paul's faithful he will have to acknowledge their two main issues.

A typical NB troll thread goes like this
Submitted by TempusFugit on Fri, 06/08/2012 - 5:05pm.
And we've had at least two of these in the last few days. An NB staffer writes an article about TV's hottest hit show. It's about a single mother attorney/CSI/medical doctor who hunts vampires in her spare time, has a loving gay couple with 6 adopted kids next door (let's call them Mike and Carl) and viewers get to vote on who is the best dancer/singer/comedian/mime in the show. It features curse words bleeped out, full behind nudity, numerous wardrobe malfunctions, sexual and scatalogical references galore. At least every ten minutes a joke that Sarah Palin can't walk and chew gum at the same time is made, Christians are shown as raving lunatics and conservatives carry guns openly to their children's recitals and pee wee soccer games. So the NB staffer writes a critical article of this trashy show. Up pops our resident liberals/TV lovers to say "but TV is so great!" The conservatives here state their opinions and give evidence that pop culture is going straight downhill. The libs bemoan censorship (even though no one has even hinted at censorship). The libs give their opinions, rather irrelevantly, on the high quality of great TV there is out there. Then they sputter about "turn off the TV if you don't like it!"...."don't let your kids watch it!"...."this thread isn't about liberal bias!"..."the writer of this article is a censoring, thought controlling, First Amendment hating conservative! Let me do his/her job for them!!!!!!!!!!!"...."they're trying to keep me from watching the incredibly brilliant, intellectual stimulating, thought provoking TV I love!!!!!!!!!!!" Conservatives then state, patiently and rationally that no one is advocating censorship, no one is proposing rewriting the First Amendment, and the writer has the right to write about what he/she chooses, and we are having a needed conversation about a trashy TV show. Liberals: "WHINE!, BITCH!, COMPLAIN!"
And to all of you libs out there (you know who you are), just as we are free to turn the TV off if we don't like what we see, you are free to turn to another article or website if you don't like what you read
Tempus, I believe you're off the mark here.

This topic has been blogged about many times over the years--most frequently by Brent Bozell--and although I'm not one of the libs defending such programming, the "if you don't like it, don't watch it" and "no government control" arguments have been propounded by libertarian-leaning conservatives at least as much if not more than by the "resident liberal trolls" you castigate. I agree the social conservatives generally side with you and Bozell.

Actually Jer
Submitted by TempusFugit on Fri, 06/08/2012 - 6:13pm.
I'm about as Libertarian as it gets, and believe that no government censorship should take place of any kind of media. And I'm not really a social conservative, in a traditional sense. I've seen some freaky stuff, had freaky friends and even participated in some freaky stuff in the past (don't ask, you don't wanna know). But being as this is a conservative leaning site, it should be expected to find social conservative views. I'm defending their right to articles stating their views. At times I get the feeling from some free speech defenders (let's lump everybody into that category rather than say liberals or libertarians for the sake of this argument) that they're trying to censor the writer and Newsbusters. Every article about the cesspool of TV, music or whatever passes as the arts is met with a Greek chorus of "how dare you criticize them!!!!"...."it's within their right to make whatever filth they can" etc etc
So let me state my position on this so there's no further misunderstandings: I believe 100%, unequivocally in the First Amendment. I believe TV, movies, musicians etc all have the right to say whatever they want. And I believe that Mr. Bozell and every Newsbusters commenter has the right to criticize it. The free speech advocates do have the right to criticize Newsbusters, but this site does belong to Mr. Bozell, and it comes off as whining when people complain about the choice of topic. I've said before that they have the right to find another website if they don't like the subject of the articles. I also believe that the best way to combat declining morals and standards in media is to write about it, talk about it and fight it without getting the government involved. Newsbusters and its contributors are exercising their First Amendment rights in the best possible way. I hate most of the filth in the media myself, but just see it as a symptom of a sick world. If someone suggested a law keeping such TV shows off the air I'd be squawking as loud as balboa and BosTarus.
I hope this essay was clear and states my view in a clear manner and closes this subject. I apologize if I lumped people together who didn't deserve to be so. I'm an incredibly slow typist, due to a minor hand defect, and sometimes use shorthand. I'll try to avoid so in the future

I'm growing more confident by the day that I'll reach the 200 mark by election day.

Why underestimate him? Let's try for at least 225. Maybe 250. Start a pool. I'm down for 232 gaffes by election day. That's 82 gaffes in a 5 month period. Difficult, but doable for the Gaffer-in-Chief

Obama is making 5-6 campaign stops per day. He has a different kind of crowd for each event which implies a new lie, er, policy, to spew for each special interest group. He also has the strong need to state something that will get him air time on all the LSM outlets to cheerlead for THE ONE. All of these activities, even with TOTUS at the helm, will increase the chances of gaffing. And if we include the gaffes where he insults other countries, not just Americans, the time frame narrows rapidly.

I'm going with 271 gaffes which should be the minimum number of electoral college votes that Romney and his unnamed running mate get.
Since the current President probably will be on the campaign trail for a good portion of the time, I don't think 271 gaffes is beyond his grasp.

Well, 200 was an arbitrary number I picked on January 1. I was STUCK at 120 in April for weeks. Then the floodgates opened.
I like Buff's idea of 271 to go along with the electoral votes.....so that is my new official goal.
[Edit] The "pool" idea is a good one too.....I'll toss up a forum tomorrow where we can record our picks.
