All Purpose Weekend Open Thread
I'm sure there's nothing to talk about this weekend what with the Facebook IPO, the campaign, the economy, hockey playoffs, basketball playoffs, etc.
But try to discuss something, okay?

Overstate much?

About a year ago, Gallup did a poll showing that Americans are completely ignorant of what percentage of the population identifies as homosexual. Mainstream studies indicate that the actual figures are somewhere in the low single digits, but Americans believed — on average — that 25 percent of the population is gay. This includes data showing that 35 percent of Americans think that more than 25 percent of the population is gay.
I’ve long wondered why it is that Americans are so wrong on this, but I can’t help but think that the mainstream media plays a significant role. I have to read tons of news stories on a broad array of topics for my various jobs and the last week has seemed about 87 percent gay news (only very slightly overestimating for editorial effect).

Bonehead and Can'tdoit don't seem to mind that Holder is giving them the finger. They have sent another worthless letter to him begging him to give up the Fast and Furious documents that Rep Issa's committe has requested. I've had enough of their BS. It is time to vote on contempt charges. He is laughing at the Republicans because their leadership has no balls. If we can get enough TEA party canidates elelcted to the House is their any possiblity that those two could be voted out of leadership roles? Another thing. Bonehead will cave to Obama on raising the debt ceiling.

When I was a kid my dad tried ladybugs and praying mantis on the garden. Wound up using the chemical. Too many bugs not enough ladybugs. One summer we had an infestation of Japanese Bettles. My job at the end of the day was to collect the jugs around the place and burn them in a wash tub. On some days.I collected as many as 5 gallons of them. Sure was glad to see that summer end even though it meant school was starting back.
That's one way to get kids to like school, I guess!

Funny story, Rick.
I have gotten to be somewhat picky about meat lately. I don't buy organic, per se, but lately I have been eliminating all processed meat, for example, sausage of all sorts, and grind it/spice it myself. And we buy all of our meat from Costco, as they butcher on site and they move so much product that it's always fresh. Plus they carry prime beef, worth the extra cost, IMO.

Mrs. Sam found a good carniceria ("butcher shop" for the Spanish-impaired) specializing in Argentinian and Texas beef, Aus/NZ lamb, American pork and locally grown poultry. She could fill a freezer on one trip. You'll never see our family becoming vegan, unless lamb suddenly becomes a vegetable.
High school physics
Submitted by CO2Maker on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 12:02pm.
I had physics at about 2:00 in the afternoon. In North Carolina. In the mid-60s before all-central-air building. Those classes got pretty hot.
Physics was doomed to the snooze effects of the lunch slump. Our teacher, though, was pretty good for reviving our interests. He was in his mid-late thirties, I guess. He was short, 5-6 or 5-7, and walked with an odd gait. He told us one of his legs was shorter than the other, so he tilted his pelvis to make it look better. That was the strange stuff. He also drove a Sting Ray, which to a bunch of 17-year old testosterone factories was waaaay more than cool. The class had only two or three girls. Once in a while, he'd tell them at the start of class that they looked like they needed a drink of water, and when they left, he'd tell us an off-color joke. He also taught us the practical application of parabolic trajectories by describing how, when he was working in the U.S. Forestry Service, he tried to bomb his friend in a boat on a lake by dropping a watermelon out of a small airplane. That was an easy lesson to remember.

You are right. Don't mess with the Houma Indians since they are very angry. The state of Louisiana recognizes the Houma's as a native tribe but they have never been accepted by the Feds BIA. The reason, so we are told, is that the tribal members are no longer "full bloodied" natives. They are a group that was first found near the Mississippi River in the 1600's. The spanish made them move around til they settled in Houma. Houma is located in south central coastal area right on the Gulf. This left them somewhat isolated until the cajuns moved into the area. They then "lost" their language and spoke cajun french as many still do today.
The Houmas have tried several times to appeal to the BIA but have been denied each time. If an entire Native tribe documented existence can be denied acceptance as Native Americans how can one woman without documents claim to be a Native American and be accepted?

The Lumbees are having a hard time getting federal reconition. It is the Cherokees that are fighting it. If the Lumbees get that they can have gambling. Cherokees have that market corner in NC. Right now they only have video games but they are asking for permission to have gaming tables.
The Catawbas just got federal reconition. I think they are working on gaming. Most of that tribe is in SC.

When I was a kid we'd spent hours in the spring getting the equipment ready. I learned a lot about electrical systems on tractors from my uncle. The wiring then was nothing like they have today. We didn't have self propelled combines and equipment like that. Everything we had ran off the PTO on the tractor.Took a lot of grease on the bearing. Sealed bearign was a thing of the futture. I worked my but off many a summer helping him and our neighbors. I wouldn't give anything for the experiences I had.

Tropical Storm Alberto
Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 7:30pm.
Looks like hurricane season is begining early this season. Tropical Storm Alberto has formed of the SC coast. Right now they are not predicting a landfall but we could see some wind and rain. With all the rain we have has this week it could cause some flooding especially here on Streets Ferry Road. We are veterans of hurricanes and flooding. I don't think anything will be as bad as Hurricane Irene Lokks like my friends in the Sunshine State have escaped again.
Next Saturday Eight Days of Hope comes to Pamlico County. There will be around 2000 volunteers that come in and work on the many houses that have yet to be repaired after Hurricane Irene. I hope they have good wheather next week Many of the folks in the Lowland area have been wating since August to have repairs made. So much for FEMA. They wanted to kick them out of their trailers back in April.
I can hear Owl Gore and his cronies screaming this is caused by globull warbling.
Presidential occupations
Submitted by CO2Maker on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 6:45pm.
What did U.S. presidents do before they were U.S. presidents. Wikipedia has a list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States_by_...
Here are the occupations of all the presidents, including POB. Look at their previous work experience. Lots and lots of lawyers, and lots of military servicemen. Many were farmers, businessmen, teachers, engineers, writers. (Apparently previous legislative service was not included.) Only one community organizer and "public interest professional."
Forty-three did stuff. One president was trained as an organizer, as a issues tactician, manipulator of opinion, gamer of the system. Keep an eye on the Fourth District race in Arkansas and how POB's surrogates are trying to disqualify John Wolfe's potential victory in the May 22 Democratic primary.

The Lybian government is denying unconfirmed rumors that his body will be dropped from an airplane cruising at 35,000 feet.

From here through Election Day, I do not mind paying high gas prices, if you know what I mean. If that is what it takes for some people to vote out O, so be it.
I really don't mean to sound insensitive to those who can't pay the high prices, as I truly feel for them. It's hard. But God save us from the country going further down the drain. Sometimes people will only vote with $ in mind.
