Joe Scarborough Calls David Gregory One of 14 Communists on Meet the Press
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough on Friday gave a tongue-in-cheek introduction to NBC's David Gregory that took an obvious swipe at Republican Florida Congressman Allen West.
"I am holding in my hands a list, a list of fourteen members of the Communist Party that work for Meet the Press. Now we bring in one them" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):
Obviously channeling the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Scarborough continued, "With us now from Washington, D.C., moderator of Meet the Press, David Gregory. David, a few questions, first, raise your right hand and repeat after me.”
This was met with laughs and guffaws from the other Morning Joe guests, as was Gregory’s response, “Have you no decency, Joe Scarborough?”
Of course, Scarborough was mocking Congressman West’s recent claim that up to 80 House Democrats are Communists.
For those that missed it, the Morning Joe host and his guests excoriated West for this on Thursday’s show.
Although this was clearly a joke, I agree with Gregory’s response.
How ’bout you?

There are a heck of a lot more than 80 commies in the House, and not all of them are democrats, either.

The term "progressive" was coined back in the days before 1900, and one of the founding members of the "Progressives" was Teddy Roosevelt. They used the term as a euphemism for socialist. What they stood for was the government taking a far, far larger role in society and administering a "safety net" for all citizens. I'm not sure where socialism and communism seperate, but they are both closely related and branches of the same ideology. Woodrow Wilson was probably the most promenent "Progressive" of his time. As was FDR.
So a self proclaimed "progressive" is calling themselves a socialist. Not a epthet necessarily if it describes their political ideology. Therefor calling members of the "Progressive Caucus" communists might not have been inaccurate at all. It might have been disconcerting and anoying to the members, but it wasn't wrong.

It's those "progressives"

The term "Progressive" was applied more than a century ago, and one of the ways to become acquainted with their antics is to offer up to the souls in Purgatory your suffering as you endure the jagged writing style of Gabriel Kolko in his curiously mis-named screed "The Triumph of Conservatism".
While a difficult read of an author totally dyslexic when trying to form sentences, it nonetheless demonstrates how the "Captains of Industry" in the guise of trust-busting were acting behind the scenes in Washington to actually create monopolies.
The modus operandi of course was to encourage the government to create regulations which would look for all the world that they were restricting trust creation when in fact they discouraged new, competing enterprises (sound familiar?).
I came close to flunking a history course for which this was required reading (the professor was a sadist) when I stated that the book ought to have been called "The Triumph of Liberalism".
Ironically the modern "Progressives" cannot stand, nor could they ever, an American space program that genuinely allowed humans to explore beyond the confines of terrestrial gravity and have brought the manned space program to a halt, and have in so doing relegated us to relying on the Russkies to maintain our bought-and-paid-for Space Station.
And for this kind of regression they call themselves "Progressives"? Gimme a break.

Joe meant it as a joke, but it's not. Nothing funny about stating fact as satire. Scarborough went the way of the passenger pigeon in his political beliefs. What he used to stand for is now extinct in his mind.
