Weekend Sports Open Thread

By NB Staff | February 04, 2012 | 12:06

A  A

I'm sure y'all want to talk about the Super Bowl. As a Niner fan still grousing about the clear fumble that was wrongly whistled dead with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship game, I can't possibly root for the Giants. And I think we've all had enough of the Patriots.

So who do you root for? Exactly what pleasure can come from this game besides the commercials and the beer?

Of course, there are other sporting events this weekend. Tons of NBA and NHL fare, along with golf and auto racing. Also, we're not too far away from March Madness.

So what's on your sports mind today other than that wretched Super Bowl tomorrow? :-)

Killa,

Be grateful the "progessives" don't have anything to do with the Super Bowl. There would be no score and everyone would get a "Participation Award"!!!!!!!!

And of course we would have Mooooooooooochelle telling what to eat at the tail gate party and during the game.

Not gonna watch

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 12:15pm.

I usually don't respond to sports threads much, come to think of it, I don't remember if I ever did, but I figured I'd make an exception in this case.

My dad's birthday falls around the time of the Super Bowl, so we used to have a tradition of watching it with the family while watching the commercials and half-time shows.....when it was entertaining.

Like I said, "used to" and "when it was entertaining."  And I mean the whole thing.  Nowadays, it seems like it's a great deal of effort to watch a Super Bowl.  Last year we were kinda half-hearted about it but ended up watching some movies towards the end, skipping the half-time show entirely from then on.  This year, we're not even going to bother.

I think it started a game or two prior to that infamous incident of Janet Jackson but it went downhill from there at breakneck speed.  Even the way they do the camera work of the game gives me a headache despite the high-def part of it which is good....when the cameras aren't zigzagging all over the place plus those "flying" cameras they have on cables that go directly over the players with a new point of view.(I don't see those lasting much longer if they continue to have near misses with them falling)

So yeah, like I said, this year, we're not going to bother, we already made different plans of a celebration of my dad's birthday (he will be 78) and the Super Bowl is not invited.

I'll be cheering for the team with the most Gators in it....

Submitted by Blonde on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 12:34pm.

Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Spikes, Gerard Warren, and Jermaine Cunningham.

I could hardly care less about their pretty boy QB.

But I'll be watching for #81, #55, #98, and #96. Watch for them to do the Gator Chomp. These guys all played w/Tebow (Spikes went so far as to return for his senior season because Timmy did). You'll probably see the most of Aaron Hernandez, who was one of Tebow's favorite receivers. He has great hands.

Dave's Super Bowl menu

Submitted by Dave. on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 12:51pm.

Pulled pork in the form of a nice, juicy bone-in Boston Butt, hickory smoked for about six hours on the Weber, then shredded, mixed with a lot of BBQ sauce, and then two more hours in the oven it goes.

My killer tater salad, baked beans with onions, and grilled pineapple will be the side dishes.

Strawberry shortcake will be the desert if anyone has any room left for it.

And there will be plenty of suds and other adult beverages around, too.

Of course, I'll have to start the grill at 7 o'clock in the morning to have it all ready to serve before the game starts.

GO GIANTS!

Hey Dave

Submitted by Blonde on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 1:41pm.

LOL, I made burgers last night, potato salad, Caesar salad & baked beans courtesy of my cooking partner in crime, FRESH tomatoes from my garden (h/t Wrathful Bru who sent me her leftover heirloom seeds), yada yada. No one even had a bite of the gorgeous apple pie I made. But it eats fine for breakfast, or so my mummy tells me.

I bought 3 10 lb.+ pork butts the other day for $1.49 a pound, instead of the usual $2.79....saving almost $40. I am loving the small freezer we bought last year.

Not sure what we're going to have tomorrow, but I have a corned beef ready to go, and maybe I'll do an eye round, get some nice deli cheeses and some great bread, and just have build your own monster sandwiches. That'll do 'er, I just decided.

For once, the Super Bowl party is not at our house.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 2:37pm.

We received an invitation from a military psychiatrist that attends our church. He is having a small get-together with some other colleagues and military families that we have invited to several of our functions over the years, and he invited us over as a thank you. I could not be more honored than to share something as wonderfully American as the Super Bowl with our brave men and women in uniform and their families. My children and the in-laws are doing separate things this year. Not being able to have my grandson on my knee as I teach him how to ogle the cheerleaders and watch the instant replays will be tough, but I get him all the following weekend and grandpa will watch movies with him all weekend!

I just wish I could get my grandson or granddaugter to sit still long enough to olge the cheerleaders. I'll watch it by myself in the bedroom. My wife will be at my daughter's house packing up to move them. The son in law was transferred from Cherry Point to Camp Lejeune. They have to be out of the house at Cherry Point by March 3rd. He is participating in Bold Alligator, a major execrise going on at Camp Lejeune. Supposed to be over by the 13th but you know nothing is a sure thing with the Marines. Besides being in my own home I can do what I want. Be sure I will not be watching that trashy Madonna at half time.

JAJT,

Submitted by Dave. on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 6:48pm.

I usually do ribs for the Super Bowl, but decided I didn't want to spend the money this year.

Besides, I found a deal on a really nice big Boston Butt, and we'll have enough leftover to last three days.

And real BBQ is always better the second day, anyway. :-)

I haven't used oak in a long time, but I keep a good supply of hickory (my fave), apple, pecan and cherry (when I can find it). I'm not a huge mesquite fan, but it works pretty well with chicken when I get burned out on hickory.

When I do roast beef (which I almost always stuff with fresh garlic, wrap tightly, and refrigerate overnight), I will take a huge handful of fresh rosemary, soak it in water for about a half hour, and drop it on the coals right after I put the meat on.

That is good stuff.

Bread and circuses and the occasionally good guy

Submitted by lrgon on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 1:48pm.

In the midst of the National Football League is one running back that was snubbed by the NFL draft for reasons that are obvious - too short. He's the NFL's "Rudy" of Notre Dame fame.

How or why the New England Patriots picked him up after Broadway Joe's old team rinsed Danny Woodhead out like an olive in a martini glass and was picked up by the Patriots is attributable to a few hundred prayers. That and the Patriots revisited his remarkable college stats.

It is reported that Danny's mother tweets her son Bible verses.Another interesting aspect to Danny's home grown Bible sound upbringing is that Mr. and Mrs. Woodhead homeschooled their children. If that isn't reason to cheer the Patriots then what is? http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&object...

Danny Woodhead, TimTebow and a few other Christian players keeps the NFL from being totally engulfed into a world of Bread and Circuses. At this point in American sports the ravenous beasts are not in the field but devouring the advertisement budgets of Pizza companies.

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 3:08am.

Yeah, Dave, I'm not a big G-man fan, but I know that they are good at taking advantage of situations..............I'm still upset that they beat the Pack (well, the Pack played a mediocre game), and then got a couple of gifts from the Niner's AND the refs......
plus my son is a BIGTIME Patriot fan - so I'm going to have to go with the Pats. I'm sure my phone will be texing off the rails during the game with both of my sons, actually.

Your menu sounds great!!! I"m just a meager bachelor these days............I could probably have a couple bowls of Wheat Chex during the game - hahahahahaha!!! But I might try and find some fresh ahi (yellowfin tuna) or ono (wahoo) tomorrow morning, after I surf, as well as some sweet onions and corn and other veggies............and get a little BBQ going on the back stoop (a word my father used to use) while the game is going on, since I can see the TV from there. Of course - later on after halftime, I'm going to be forced to mix a couple of black cherry/vodka drinks - especially if the game is good. I can't watch a crappy game, so I hope that it's tight. My #2 son says Pats by 17 - but I think that's a little optimistic.

Halftime show??? Maybe I'll do the laundry............jeez............when was the last time there was a good halftime show??? Madonna??? I've had girlfriends who are hotter than her BEFORE they put on their faces. And her 'music' is totally vapid and forgettable.

It's one of the things that got them to this game. It's not talked about much given the two plays that the Ravens flubbed two weeks ago, but on the play between the dropped pass in the endzone and the missed field goal, there was a blatant PI on that #29 as he dragged down our receiver at the three yard line well ahead of the ball getting there.

On another note, that kind of ties in to why these penalties aren't called on NE: there was a headline on HotAir earlier today by someone claiming to know why Tom Brady is hated by so many. Something about Boston and being a pretty boy, but personally, I disagreed. I don't hate Tom Brady but I do loathe him as a QB for two reasons: "the tuck rule" and "the Brady rule". This team generally, and that QB specifically, are the most protected in the NFL. It was nice to see some calls against them tonight, but they had none against Baltimore and even the calls tonight were pretty innocuous in the grand scheme of things.

I'm thrilled the Patriots lost. Congrats NY Football Giants and Eli Manning.

Super Bowl Highs and Lows

Submitted by berlet98 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:46am.

SuperBowl XLVI, Big Highs, Two Notable Lows

After weeks of incessant hype which became as tedious as political blatherings and debates, the annual American spectacle, the Super Bowl, is finally over.

For those living under some rock or maybe in Massachusetts, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots in the forty-sixth edition of the Super Bowl by eking out a 21-17 victory thanks to Tom Coughlin’s coaching, Eli Manning’s unflappability, and Mario Manningham proving he knows where his feet are.

To Giant fans, those were the highest points of Super Bowl XLVI–the only association with Roman numerals most of America’s schoolkids ever get–although there were others, including a typically-amazing halftime show concluding with Madonna vaporized in a cloud of smoke.

Unfortunately, that vaporization was a special effect.

There were no intentional “wardrobe malfunctions” comparable to Janet Jackson’s nipple display during halftime in 2004 but NBC’s did feature the only low moment of the show when the alleged entertainer M.I.A. showed she has even less class than she has talent.

During Madonna’s song “Give Me All Your Luvin,” M.I.A. displayed the middle finger of her left hand and obscenely cursed at either Madonna, at the hundred million children and adults watching the performance, or both.

NBC and the NFL quickly offered explanatory defenses.

NBC disingenuously contended, “It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late [to bleep].” The network didn’t explain how M.I.A.’s flipping the bird and mouthing an expletive could possibly be interpreted as ”a spontaneous gesture.”

The NFL’s response . . . (Read more at http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=12632.)
