Weekend Open Thread
There sure are a lot of things to talk about this weekend. Here are a few ideas:
- Exactly how did Mitt Romney turn what should have been a post-Florida primary victory lap into a bad week? Regardless of your support for him, does his tendency to shoot himself in the foot concern you? This should have been his best campaign week to date. Instead, he probably lost momentum. How does someone snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this way?
- The headline figures in yesterday's unemployment report were quite good. But buried inside were continued concerns about the labor participation rate and people leaving the labor force. Net-net do you see this as a positive report, negative, or neutral? Do you see the economy at this point having turned the corner, or is there a lot of trouble on the horizon? Are things good enough to help Obama in November, or is it too soon to tell?
- Did Komen cave to the media pressure or did they rethink their Planned Parenthood decision for other reasons?

Slavery and Abortion
Submitted by needle on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 12:57pm.
For two and a half centuries slavery was a stain on our country; and eventually we fought a very nasty war to rid our nation of that awful blot our souls.
And now it seems as if abortion has taken overtaken slavery's role as the stain of the nation.
Interestingly, the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision was instrumental in lifting the slavery issue to what became the Civil War. The same can be said of Roe vs. Wade.
When you think about it, there are all sorts of comparisons between slavery and abortion.

I think what the Democrats are doing with the abortion of black babies is more in line with keeping a herd culled.
They follow this man. Note the 3rd subtitle closely.
And let's not forget the lily-white liberal plantation

If the Commiecrats hadn't
Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 4:04pm.
If the Commiecrats hadn't aborted so many babies we would be in real trouble. Just think of all the Commiecrats there would be today. They'd be more riding in the wagon than pulling it I know we are not that far from that happening now but just think how much worse it would have been. Is that racist?

I wonder if, when Darwin wrote about the “preservation of favored races,” he had in mind what most people since Hitler think of, now that we all have evolved so well.

The civil war was not fought initially over slavery.

The war was to force the secessionists states back into the Union. The Politically Incorrect Guide to History --- Tom Wood
Roe V. Wade.
Newt Gingrich pointed out during one of the GOP debates that congress has at its disposal article III, section 2 of the Constitution to check court decisions. Gingrich wasn't specifically addressing Roe v. Wade when he made that statement but nonetheless he touched on a provision that needs to be looked at by congress.
Roe v wade could be gone by tomorrow if congressmen would use that provision instead of going the amendment route. Garnering enough votes in both chambers of congress would seem to be the logical approach to ending the holocaust instead of the long drawnout battle of the amendment process.

The Democrats were fierce advocates for slavery; and similarly now they are fierce advocates for abortion.

How about that Racine, WI
Submitted by ThisnThat on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 1:02pm.
How about that Racine, WI schoolteacher who refused to accept an award from Paul Ryan, and took the opportunity to chant "It's for the kids"? What's going to happen to him? Nothing? I can't imagine what he does to any kid who doesn't totally, and immediately "agree" with this man during class! What a nightmare that must be, knowing that you -- as a student -- must bend to this man's will or be silently punished with no recourse at all. And I'll bet this man continues to stay in his classroom, with the full support of the school administration and the union.

Romney turned his Fla. victory lap into a quicksand slog when he agreed to appear on Soldout O'brien's MSNBC show.
Why Republicans aren't rerunning Obama's admission of being a MUslim, and his repetition of the prayer declaring there is no god but allah, is beyond me.

Wait 'til fall.
Massachusetts is an awful place to live, if you are conservative; but one messily consolation is that neither Republicans nor Democrats spend any money on political advertising here. Phew!
If the national election is competitive, it sure ain't here; and if the race here were ever competitive, the nation would be heading towards a massive Republican landslide. In either, case there is no point in spending political advertising money in Massachusetts.
Instead, one gets to enjoy pure
unadulteratedunalloyed Liberalism.- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.
Komen caved into the pressure.
Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 2:21pm.
So many of the corporate sponsors use Komen as an example of how they support causes for their "corporate responsibility" mantra that SGKF had no choice but to capitulate and throw itself upon a sword in spite of its values. The corporate sponsors most certainly applied pressure so the liberal mainstream media and politicians would not go after them next. I would not be surprised if a bunch of corporate CEOs received calls from PP and DNC HQ threatening tax investigations, negative publicity, etc. just like the Lowe's situation with the American Muslim TV show.

What's happening in Nevada? I haven't heard a lot about it this week. Romney's comment has taken center stage in the MSM. You better believe that Obama will be shouting it come September.
Glad to hear some good news

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 4:02pm.
I don't know if you have followed the saga of Emily Miller of the Washington Times and all the hoops she had to jump through just to get a gun in DC. She started this quest on Oct 5, 2011 and if things work out she can take her gun home next week. Here is a link to all her stories. This is just BS. The NRA has filed suti against DC for the BS they are giving people just to execise one of their fundamental rights

Unemployment drops to 8.3%............with 1.2 million people dropping out of the system, the largest one month exodus in the history of those stats. If we can just get everyone out of the unemployment system, they'll still be unemployed, but we can get the rate down to 0% and have big parades throwing lollipops all over the place.
I like that theory
Submitted by John Francroix Jr on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 10:55am.
About the people giving up looking for work, so the unemployment rate goes down. Except what happens to the people who stopped looking for work? They don't need money? Were they looking for supplemental income? Were the unemployment numbers overblown when these people were included as jobless, if it's so easy for them to simply switch their status? Say a husband and wife both get laid off and both go on unemployment, and then the husband gets a great job and the wife gets pregnant. Their income is steady once again and the lady could naturally stop looking for work. The unemployment percentage number has been a standard measurement despite the number of people dropping in and out of the system; including that number would be known as moving the goalposts.

The stats on unemployment concern me mostly because the Talking Heads will distort any gloomy news into a glittering positive, especially in October.

In all seriousness though, this doesn't surprise me, it's both good and bad that they have a huge level of idiocy in their ranks. Good because they WILL blow themselves up, bad because there are a few smart ones to take advantage of that idiocy.

The man who famously said: "go west young man"
Submitted by lrgon on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 2:00pm.
and founder of The New York Tribune, Horace Greeley followed his own advice and headed west himself in1854 with associate Alvan E. Bovay to found a "third" political party. They met in what is today Ripon, Wisconsin in a "little white school house" to cobble together what became known as the Republican Party.
In 21st century America there is a Ripon Society that commemorates that 1854 event honoring its founders and their philosophy. Bovay and Greeley formed auxillaries called Wide Awake Republicans to recruit members into their fledgling political party. The acronym WAR was more than mere coincidence since the philosophy driving WAR auxillaries was to promote world empire using the US military.
It was well known to historians that Bovay and his rich newspaper friend Greeley held strong socialist views. Greeley was fond of socialist causes and communists. He hired a guy named Karl Marx as foreign correspondent for his newspaper The New York Tribune. Bovay and Greeley were socialist at home and intended on using their influence to promote socialism abroad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvan_E._Bovay
