Bill Maher and Rob Reiner Don't Get the Fuss Over Marines Urinating on Dead Taliban - 'It's Expected'

By Noel Sheppard | January 14, 2012 | 11:52

Noel Sheppard's picture

It really is amazing how far liberal media members are willing to go to deflect any criticism from Barack Obama.

On HBO's Real Time Friday, host Bill Maher and guest Rob Reiner said this week's revelation of United States Marines urinating on dead Taliban wasn't really that big of a deal; Reiner even said, "It's expected" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

As the discussion began, Maher said, "I''m sure no one condones it on this panel...Compared to some of the things the United States has done, like torturing."

Reiner interjected, "Abu Ghraib."

"Mitt Romney's big thing is 'No apology. America is never apologize.' Would he apologize for this?" Maher asked.

"Yeah, of course he would," answered Reiner. "Nobody condones it, obviously, but, I mean, war does make people a little crazy. I mean, you know, you put young people in a situation like that."

Maher agreed, "That's right."

"They're seeing their friends killed next to them and they act out," continued Reiner. "There's no justifying it, but it's expected. I mean, these are the kinds of things that happen during war."

It's expected. These are the kinds of things that happen during war.

Remember all the outrage over Abu Ghraib? Do you think for a second that Maher and Reiner would be so blasé about this if George W. Bush or any Republican were currently in the White House?

Isn't it fascinating to watch fervently anti-war liberals speak so cavalierly about what some might consider a war crime against an enemy combatant in the field?

Instead of the typical protests from these two about the Geneva Convention, we got "Compared to some of the things the United States has done, like torturing" and "It's expected."

As I've said for years, it takes a staggering amount of rationalizations to be a liberal these days.

Exit question: How big would this issue be if there were currently a Republican in the White House seeking reelection?

Wait, wasn't Abu Ghraib Bush's fault?

Submitted by UpNorth on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 12:02pm.

Didn't libs tell us it happened because of Bush's lack of leadership?  Wasn't one of the talking points that Abu Ghraib went all the way up the chain of command?  Then, doesn't it follow that this is because of Obama's lack of leadership?  If Obama gets credit for UBL, doesn't it follow that he gets the blame, if any, for this?

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

UpNorth . . and, the Kill Squads episode in Afghanistan

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 2:08pm.

Both of these events occurred under Obama as Commander in Chief. As Noel mentioned, if Bush (or any Republican) were at the helm, it would be just like when Bush was there - Maher and friends, as well as much of the MSM, would be pointing their wicked little fingers directly at the top. There'd be calls for impeachment - war crimes. . and on and on.

Pathetic.

The point is pacifists are

Submitted by dscott on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 11:16am.

The point is pacifists are naive rubes who are easily tricked into supporting anything when they are lied to about the intent of stopping a war.

You know Obama was against the war before he was for it when he amped up the use of drones to kill the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Obama like most Democrats know the political calculation of dead US soldiers versus a dead enemy. Just like Democrats, pacifists are also calculating in that they use the US body count to rationalize their position to the rest of us, the problem for them is Democrats have been handed a golden opportunity to kill without putting US soldiers at risk. Democrats are no less willing to kill an enemy that is trying to kill them like the rest of us.

The only difference between us and Democrats is that we are simply unwilling to use war for political benefit as respect for human life (others) is a measure of character. Obama's Libyan adventure is the demonstration of this lack of character in Democrats. Obama was more than willing to see thousands of people die to save face after telling Qadahfi to go, so long as it wasn't US soldiers which would be politically negative to him. It reminds me of an old Three Stooges line where Moe says, "over his dead body" while pointing at Curly.

Well, as a former Marine

Submitted by bkeyser on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 1:49pm.

I say they should get Office Hours resulting in reduction of rank by one grade. It'll kill their careers but not ruin their lives. Marines are held to a higher standard and this was unbecoming. And why these guys think video taping something like that is "funny" I'll never understand. Had they been in my charge, they'd still be digging. (More than one of my Marines had to dig a hole at Twenty Nine Palms with the instructions to make it big enough to bury a 5-ton.)

That being said, it is also true that when ya gotta go, ya gotta go.

And they didn't commit treason by divulging tens of thousands of classified documents. It's worth remembering that.

What's the charge?

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 2:23pm.

Whether this matter is handled by court-martial or non-judicial punishment (NJP -- Office Hours/USMC; Catpain's Mast/USN; Article 15/Army-USAF) hinges on whether or not they have violated the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice), and the discretion of the chain of command.

Art. 133 - Conduct Unbecoming and Officer and a Gentleman. This only applies to commissioned officers. There is no conduct unbecoming article for enlisted personnel, including NCO's and petty officers.  This can only be applied to any commissioned officers in the incident, and that would include the person who recorded the imagery and any officer who may have been present and witnessed it without stopping it.

Art. 117 - Provoking Speech or Gestures.  This can only be applied when all of the following elements have been met.

(1) That the accused wrongfully used words or gestures toward a certain person;  (The key words here are 'certain person')

(2) That the words or gestures used were provoking or reproachful; (If Element 1 can be proven to apply, this certainly does)

and

(3) That the person toward whom the words or gestures were used was a person subject to the code.  (This is the showstopper.  Neither the corpses nor the living Taliban whom might feel provoked are subjects to the UCMJ.  Therefore, this article does not apply.)

However, we do not have incomplete information. because we do not know what kinds of orders were in effect at the time of the incident.  Therefore, one or both of the following may be applicable depending on those orders --

Art. 92 - Failure to Obey a Lawful Order or Regulation

Art. 98 - Noncompliance with Procedural Rules

I saw an article in the paper spewing the same talking points: how it's almost expected, and how throughout history the winners of wars have always taunted the losers. Sounds like Maher got the memo.
So, since he got BinLaden, and pulled the troops out, its Obama's war (unlike the economy, which is still Bush's) and no harsh words will come forth about the war. Unless it helps their arguments.

I would not say it rises to the level of a war crime.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 2:15pm.

Does it even violate the Geneva Convention?

GENEVA CONVENTION I (Protection for sick and wounded combatants on land) <<< 1949

Article 15: At all times, and particularly after an engagement, Parties to the conflict shall, without delay, take all possible measures to search for and to collect the wounded and sick, to protect them against pillage and ill-treatment, to ensure their adequate care, and to search for the dead and prevent their being despoiled.

Let's remember, the Taliban have abided by no article of the Geneva Convention. Nor were they signatories to any of the Geneva Conventions.

Nor can it be considered a war crime under United States Code -

War crimes in general apply to willful injury and death to civilians. Remember, we are allowed to kill our enemies. Without mercy, where they eat, sleep, poo, and play. Day or night. Peeing on them after they are dead? Ehhh.

1) defined as a grave breach in any of the international conventions signed at Geneva 12 August 1949, or any protocol to such convention to which the United States is a party;

Grave breach. Grave.

1) Prohibited conduct.—

(A) Torture.—

(B) Cruel or inhuman treatment.—

That is on live people only not the dead

C) Performing biological experiments.—

(D) Murder.—

E) Mutilation or maiming.—

(F) Intentionally causing serious bodily injury.—

(G) Rape.—

(H) Sexual assault or abuse.—

(I) Taking hostages.—

Yeah, they violated some article of the UCMJ. And for that they will be punished. And they violated one of the rules of common sense - For heaven's sake, don't videotape yourself doing something illegal or possibly illegal, and if you do, don't post it on the internet dummy.

I expect dribble like this from them. This kind of action from our military only inflames the passions of our enemies, and will cause more American lives to be lost. There's no reason to act like this once you've killed the enemy. They're dead. They don't know, or respond to being urinated on, but the ones that still live will when seeing the video of it. Acting like the barbaric terrorists, makes us appear no better than these third world countries that are harboring the terrorists. The U.S.A. is better than they are, and these actions should not go unpunished, I don't care what the stresses of battle may be. They had already handed out the ultimate punishment to the bad guys, why make yourselves bad guys afterward? I am ashamed of those Marines, and I have the greatest respect for our military troops, who are all volunteers, protecting our rights and freedom throughout the world. For the liberals who support this kind of disgusting action from our military, I expect this kind of response from you. I'm very surprised by the number of conservatives who find no problem with this despicable action. What a shame that our great nation is quickly losing all sense of decency and honor.

This was displaying contempt for an enemy who daily, routinely violates not only The Rules of Land Warfare, but the Geneva Conventions.  And, I have a hint for you, truckin, it's happened before.

We are, or we should be, "better than that." What good comes from the act despoiling a dead body? That's an immature, irresponsible thing to do. The Marines, just as with all other branches of the military, are taught to rise above that type of juvenile behavior and act professionally.

Don't make excuses for these men, for there is no excuse for their behavior. When you put on that uniform, you represent the United States of America, so you better act appropriately, AT ALL TIMES! That's what I was taught when I entered military service. I'm sure these men were taught the same thing.

So these Marines, some of which were probably only four years beyond puberty, pissed on some dead talibastards that had probably just tried to kill them.

When Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. took a squirt in the Rhine,  the American people cheered.

Now, a bunch of dest-driving brass wearers, who have probably never even seen actual combat, are going to destroy the lives of these brave young Marines for no other reason than spineless political correctness.

Is it any wonder the United States hasn't actually won a war since WWII?

Not at all, bal, if those dead people ---

Submitted by matthewdean on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 10:47pm.

had both the means and desire to cause my death before meeting their own demise.

I feel it was most ill advised to film the event; but only because the inevitable happened - the film has now been viewed by those who find it either necessary to showcase their own personal perfection by judging battlefield combatants without having experienced the emotions that led to the event taking place; or find it enjoyable to revel in the act of condemning others who don't play by civilized rules while engaged in the most uncivilized arena possible for the human race - warfare; with the attendant purpose of killing others.

It's ok to kill people; just don't piss on their dead bodies, as that might show disrespect.

I have no doubt that is precisely why that action took place.

If it was me, I would take the business of being killed far more personal  than being whizzed on.

Look on the bright side; the event gives all the Dudley Dorighters the opportunity to cast aspersions on those less perfect than themselves.

A Few Good Men...

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 12:01pm.

The military represents America. The members of the military are not allowed to do things like despoil a dead body, even during the heat of battle, for that reflects poorly upon our Country and our Citizens. We are taught to be professionals, to act with honor and dignity, AT ALL TIMES! These men dishonored the uniform, and, in doing so, dishonored us all. That's what ashamed me as an American and as a Veteran.

You have a point, CobraMan, but when---

Submitted by matthewdean on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 8:48pm.

I see the activities of 'professional' politicians CONTINUALLY reflecting poorly on this country; the actions of personnel who have risked and are currently risking life and limb on the battlefield tend to get a less critical eye from me.

Military personnel are not supposed to despoil a dead body because it is, what, uncivilized?

What is civilized about warfare?

I understand that there are rules to be followed to ensure military cohesion within battle groups; but I also recall a professional military man saying - paraphrasing - that the best laid out plans generally go out the window once the first shot is fired.

Being "not allowed" to do something certainly didn't keep the event from taking place; and now those responsible will be dealt with per military rules; and I don't believe that making water on a dead body will lead ultimately to military and world chaos because a rule, moral or otherwise, was trespassed against.  It has happened before, and it will happen again.

Those soldiers have already been censured by people who feel it necessary to criticize what they perceive as the callousness exhibited by the soldiers and how badly the act of pissing on a corpse reflects on America overall.  Had they not done what they did, there would be no recriminations forthcoming, that is true.

Better they hadn't done it.

I doubt seriously, though, that had this event not occurred, the enemies of America would feel any less hatred for us.

What do these two idiot libs know about the military?

Submitted by NJRightWinger12 on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 5:46pm.

Besides conveniently blaming them for anything wrong that happens in war, esp under O'bozo? And of course, they cant EVER blame Ear Leader when something goes wrong, like they LIOVED to blame Pres Bush during his term. And, btw, theyre BOTH meatheads!

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. BEN FRANKLIN

I know at least one Marine that wouldn't mind pissing on both of them, dead or alive.

I'm surprised the meatheads didn't blame Bush for this like they do everything else.

Pissing on something is part of American culture

Submitted by Prince of Peeps on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 3:46am.

With a decal of the cartoon character Calvin pissing on Ford or pissing on Chevy plastered on the rear window of nearly every pickup truck in America, the concept of pissing on something has been ingrained into American culture. Who's surprised that this would manifest itself in such a manner? However, regarding the faux shock at such abhorrent behavior, I've seen videos on Youtube of kids doing worse to their friends and everyone laughs about it. Just part of the coarsening of American culture that has been going on for 50 years. Libs brought it on and have promoted it, so naturally they would think this was no big deal.

Cultural insults

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 11:26am.

It's rather ironic that the people most disturbed by this action are Americans. Most Muslims wouldn't know the significance of "pissing on your dead body," if it wasn't for our own press making such a fuss about it. Their culture doesn't regard it as an act of defilement.

If, on the other hand, the Marines in question would have beat the bodies with their shoes, or dragged them through the street, hung them in public view, and burned their bodies, now that would have been insulting to Muslims! Pissing on them? That's just confusing.
