Weekend Open Thread
With Mitt Romney's surprise performance in the Iowa caucuses and new polls showing him widening his lead in New Hampshire, is the race for GOP presidential nominee almost over? If not, who can beat the former Massachusetts governor?
Anything else you want to talk about this weekend?

If the election is
Submitted by MidAmerica on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 8:53am.
If the election is about obama, obama loses.
If the election is about anything but obama, obama may survive.
I'm not jumping on the Santorum bandwagon because at this point he is being defined and Palinized by the obama protecting media. Santorum is not getting a fair hearing on what he would do as President because the media is drowning out any conversation about real issues to hammer Santorum on social issues that only serve to unify and motivate the democrat's base
Unless Santorum can get quickly beyond the hostile media and communicate with the wider electorate with his message then the dems and the media will make Santorum the issue for the Presidential campaign and Santorum will have a very tough time beating obama unless some catastrophe hits the country.
The election
Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 10:39am.
Quite honestly, I'm not sure it matters what the election may be about at this point and for a couple of good reasons: Soetoro's acting in a dictator fashion and Congress/SCOTUS not doing anything about it.
If the checks and balances we have are not acted on as they should be, the election will be pointless, hell, will it even be allowed to happen especially if it looks like DuhOne is shown to be in serious jeopardy of losing it. We've seen how thin-skinned he is(and it gets thinner all the time), who's to say he'll let the elections happen and he'll EO them out of existence?
Sounds alarmist? HELL YES! His actions of the last three years have been alarming enough as it is! You naysayers that have been saying he's incompetent and doesn't know what he's doing, well, he's doing a helluva bangup job and History shows us that other dictators started out with similar beginnings, most notably Hitler, but he's not the only one!
I'm not hearing enough except from the US Chamber of Commerce who is apparently a mortal enemy of the Bogus Potus who is threatening a lawsuit and then some other random groups doing the same thing about these recess appointments. Yes, Dingy Harry won't be called on to do the right thing, he approves of this, Bonehead and Can't Do It, they won't man up and do what's right.
This country is DYING, its mortality can be counted in months, not years, and the more the Constitution is ignored, the faster the death comes with great peril to the Americans.
With all this going on, what the hell makes people think we're going to have elections 10 months from now? I dare anyone to try to prove to me that we will because at this rate, I don't see it happening.

My optimism is at an all-time low.
Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 9:25am.
It's pretty clear the nominee is going to be Romney, by sheer virtue of the fact that the media are going to pummel anyone who inches up on him, until they drive that person back down. That, and the fact the he will apparently have the money to outlast everyone.
I hate this system of the primaries; after every vote, donors seem to flock to the leader like a bunch of 6-year-olds playing soccer, and the others get left behind. I wish we could have a "national" primary.
I fear Ann Coulter was right the first time, and the nominee will be Mitt Romney and we will lose.
The problem here is that Romney is disliked by too many Republicans, who, cutting off their noses to spite their faces, will refuse to vote for him.

I would call anyone who calls him or herself a Republican, a conservative, or just anti-Obama who decides he/she won't vote for the Republican candidate because of {whatever} an anti-American, and a coward. We need to get Obama OUT and do it in November, if not sooner.

The same guy who said "never again" will he salute the flag or stand up for the national anthem.
At least he's shot his bolt now, and WE will "never again" have to put up with his quadrennial pleas for attention by announcing that he's "trying to decide" if he should run for president.

Cognative Dissonance? Maybe Dr Sam can chime in.
Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 12:06pm.
Last night on Cam and CompanyJed Babbin used the term "congative dissonance." I had never heard this before. He said that many liberals have it. It is having 2 conflicting ideals, values. An example would be like Boy Georgie and Press shouting to mountain top about gun control yet they praise the 18 year old mother that defended her son. Or Pelosi saying she was against recess appointments before Obama did them.
Maybe Dr Sam can go into this more but it sure does explain why lefty loonies are the way they are.
Psychiatric definition of cognitive dissonance.
Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 2:13pm.
Cognitive dissonance is essentially the stress and accompanying indecision that comes from holding conflicting beliefs. Often, one belief is logically grounded, e.g. I should not buy that car because I do not have the money, and the second belief is emotionally based, e.g. but I would look so hot in that car and it is so hot looking. The logic/emotion stress is not always the case, but it is a convenient example of how irrational decisions are made by otherwise rational people.
In the case of liberals, it comes back to their severely dysfunctional reliance on emotion and false mantras to beliefs, positions and actions which otherwise would be negated by a logical consideration of the premises. An example of this is liberal compulsion to paste racist labels on those who criticize Obama for his economic performance. Logic would hold that as Obama is the President, and the economy is doing poorly, then his economic performance would be considered logically to be terrible. Upon hearing that, the cognitive dissonance occurs when liberals start spouting that only someone who is racist would "attack" Obama. Remind you of any journotrash we know?
The more severe examples of cognitive dissonance occur when the logic component is something that is essentially incontrovertible, and the counter-position is entirely emotional in construction. I could not think of a better example than the economic performance of Obama previously. The problems of cognitive dissonance are complex, but so many of those with significant cognitive dissonance features in their mental health are the same ones who are more than willing to act in a way that makes no sense and causes chaos. The outrageous actions of the OWS protesters, such as defecating on police cars and harassing children on their way to school are just such examples. Cognitive dissonance is a feature of many common types of mood and personality disorders, and is often also associated with the more severe forms of mood disorders such as OCD and bipolar I/II. For this reason, it is not uncommon for neuropsychiatrists (whose specialty is cognition) to further work up those patients who display cognitive dissonance features for a multitude of other neurological or psychiatric illnesses.
Hope this helps.

Submitted by UpNorth on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 11:59am.
Apparently, the fear of "chemtrails" has gotten so bad that there's a run on vinegar at your local grocery stores.
Funny, I always thought those trails were hot exhaust gases in cold air, who would have known that the Paulians think it's the Jooooo's way of controlling us?
But, hey, if shooting vinegar mist 4 or 5 feet in the air can keep me safe from "chemtrails" I'm on my way to the store, before the vinegar is all gone.

What's a little acidic soil when it comes to destroying Chemtrails? So what if your lawn dies and weeds propagate uncontrollably throughout your entire neighborhood, thus exasperating the suffering of people with allergies? At least you know you're safe from Jewchems.
I mean, really, even when that acid makes its way into the ground water, and lakes, rivers and streams, and destroys the necessary flora needed for a healthy environment, at least the Jewchems are gone!

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 2:49pm.
I was reading that ol' Purple Lips himself, Boy Business, is telling (evil) business to 'bring the jobs back home'. Isn't this the same guy that basically took over GM (Government Motors), who has now been reported to be outsourcing work to Finland AND China??? And the same President who (along with his puppet-master George 'Dracula' Soros) invested a couple hundred million of OUR money (well, it's not really 'ours', is it???) in the BRAZILIAN oil exploration and production program, while at the exact same time SHUTTING DOWN our own oil exploration and production??? Oh.........I guess it's OK - he said that we would be their 'best' customer!!!
I think there's a lot of other examples - these two just flew out of my peabrain as I was reading about what Boy BlahBlah said.
And why isn't this used by 'our' Presidential candidates - along with about a zillion other facts that could be used against Boy Barry???
I get the feeling the GOP candidates are concentrating

on trying to secure the nomination and are -at least lately- going after each other more than Obama. This'll change in short order.
I'm looking forward to the one-on-one debates and media coverage once our nominee has been determined. A lot of the debates thus far have included "audience participation" from various social networks, so it'll be interesting to see if that pattern follows once Obama has to get involved. We'll get a pretty good indication the extent the media will go to protect him once they have to stop ignoring him.
I'd like the GOP candidate to ask Obama directly whether he still believes ObamaCare is revenue-neutral, and how much of an effect the early tax increases vs. late payouts made that possible, before the series of revenue-drawing elements such as the 1099 feature and CLASS were dropped. Following up with his projections for decade number two, challenging his honesty. He'll surely say "the CBO blah, blah, blah..."
I'd also like someone to ask which of his legislative achievements led most directly to the current state of the economy. My guess is the moderators will intervene as often as possible, but will be seen for what they are and hurt Obama's re-election chances rather than help. There's just too much awareness among independents who -pre-Obama- able to diminish media bias as just objective reporting about the evil Bush.

On one hand, I doubt the Chinese want it. They're probably fully aware of the battery problem in the Volt. On the other hand, I guess Government Motors never heard of the theft of "intellectual property" that seems to run rampant in China.
Actually, Killa, it's about $2 Billion, with a B. The money is being routed through the Export-Import bank, so that it doesn't look like the U.S. is directly loaning the money. After all, Soros has to get richer.

Thanks, Up........actually, when I was writing that this morning, I THOUGHT that it was 2 billion - since 200 million is kind of a paltry sum in this era, given the way that Obama spends money - but I was hesitant to write it, lest I be wrong - and get hammered for making a mistake.
But the point was - we'll invest in Brazilian oil, with the promise to BUY it..........while at the same time we're shutting down big areas of our own production. There is NOBODY that can tell me - with a straight face - that Boy Barry won't do WHATEVER he can to make life harder for the average American - and especially the 'regular folks', like you and me............who are NOT part of the 'in crowd' with this REGIME!!!

UpNorth is right about Soros getting richer. He made 800million selling his stock in PetroBras right after Obama gave them the $2B to drill in deep water. He also gave Mexico $2B to drill in the Gulf. All with the promise of buying oil from them rather than allow US to drill in the gulf. Basically, its typical Obama Chicago tactics. Create a policy that allows you to funnel money to your rich friends for future favors.
TMI
Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 4:06pm.
TMI=Too Much Information.....or in this day and age, Information Overload?
I had lunch with my dad today and was talking with him about all the stuff that's happened this week alone with the unConstitutional acts of DuhOne and the stuff before that (the health care, the TSA, and FPS and more) seem to be leading up to what's historically seen in Germany 1938.
He brought something up which I wanted to get from some of you here and I can't help but wonder about it. On the one hand, all the stuff we are seeing where our freedoms are being stripped away in pieces and the Constitution being shredded, this most of us would agree on, yes? So on the other hand, are we seeing something that's nothing unusual in other countries that have all sorts of strife going on(Egypt, Syria, Greece, etc) and we're just hyper aware of it because of the technologies that allow us to get the news almost instantly as opposed to how things were 50-100 years ago where information traveled at a much slower rate? Of course, I should point out that there are attempts to control the flow of information and the government now has the power to shut the internet down, something Iran's been cracking down on in the last few days if anyone's seen the news on that. Just more of their quest for freedom which the bogus potus is not interested in helping them on.
Of course, I made the argument that what's going on in this country SHOULDN'T be happening because that's what America was, a bastion of hope and freedom and people escaped dictatorships and wars to get here. It seems(and it's very difficult if not impossible to refute this) that the situation is being reversed, that this country is becoming a dictatorship, no longer attempting to even hide it as of the last few days, and some people have entertained the ideas of leaving this country for something safer because they can see the writing on the wall. I also added that we have a bogus potus that's trying to make this country more Muslim as well as his appeasing those Muslim countries including the Brotherhood because they are spreading like a cancer and people are turning a blind eye because of the continuous lies of "Islam, the religion of peace" unless you add to it that it's the peace of tyranny.
My dad found it hard to dispute what I said about the above, but he seems to think that the election will make a difference. I asked him if that's what they said for Germany 1938 because history is literally repeating itself. By failing to learn from that, by the time people realize what the hell's going on, it could be too late. Only difference is the 2nd amendment and there's a war going on against that too.
What do you all think, those of us who have been dreading and predicting(coming true too) the stuff that's been going on in the last three years, is that really alarmist? Is that just ignoring something that's happening because people don't want to believe it? Is it because of technology that we're aware more of what's going on and we're overreacting to it? Is it something else? I still feel like this country is in a lot of trouble.
I welcome any responses.

I'm hopeful that what we're seeing politically -right now- is a combination of a propped-up president and the natural and necessary bloodsport that is the primary season. It bothers me to see the cannibalism within the party, but I think ultimately, we'll coalesce and support the eventual nominee. All of this -I think- helps exacerbate the helplessness and vitriol we feel about our country and those who wish to permanently change her.
But in the end, I think most people will be forced to choose between the old adage that will universally sum up Obama's campaign: "Do you believe me or your lying eyes?"
Oddly, the trending unemployment numbers aren't turning empty retail spaces into thriving businesses. The media can play the "Happy Days Are Here Again" theme until it hurts your ears, but they can't stop people from seeing abandoned businesses and dwindling bank accounts. They can't change the fact that millions of people have now been out of work for more than two years. They can't convince a voter, "Don't worry, there's a good-paying job in your near future." And neither can Obama.
I see what he's doing now as grabbing for the final knots on the rope. He's flailing. It's all political and all to turn out his base. This says to me that his internal polling shows a severe case of malaise from the very people he should be able to rely on. He's not wooing Independents, he's wooing environmentalists and union bosses. That's not a prescription for victory for a Democrat. That's an admission of impending doom.
November won't fix everything and I suspect we'll have plenty to criticize a GOP president about, but I'm pretty confident the progressive experiment is about to come to an end. They over-reached. They thought they had a mandate that was beyond race. They thought they had a guy that could talk the world into the utopia they've always and naively envisioned. He's failed on numerous fronts. And he can't hide from that failure.
At least this is my hope.

I haven't seen this anywhere on NB - yet - but last night I caught a newsclip of the McCain Mutiny giving some kind of pro-Romney speech somewhere in New Hampshire yesterday.................and he referred to Romney as 'President Obama' a couple of times before some lady walked up to him and whispered in his ear - and then, he had to quickly say that he meant 'President Romney', and he was clearly flustered.
Well, first of all McCain is an embarrassment as a candidate and as a so-called 'Republican'...........and secondly, he's saying things like this???? Didn't he say enough stupid things that last time we had to deal with him??? I wouldn't touch this guy with YOUR ten-foot-pole, yet I was forced into voting for this wimp in 2008!!!! If I were in the Romney camp, I'd be very wary of putting any kind of emphasis on McCains support - I don't think it's worth the paper it's printed on.
