Joe Scarborough Nails Donny Deutsch for Blindly Supporting Obama in 2008
When you think about it, Obama-loving media members have a lot of gall accusing the current Republican presidential candidates of being unqualified for the job.
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough on Friday nicely pointed this out to the Obama-supporting Donny Deutsch after he asked why "a strong, competent human being out of a country of 300 million people" isn't amongst the current crop of GOP candidates (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):
This lead Scarborough to say, "Could we ask the same about who the Democrats gave us four years ago?" He continued, "Is that really as good as it gets - a guy who doesn't know how to run Washington, D.C.?"
Deutsch responded, "At the time you went 'Wow, here is a special guy.'"
"Well, then you were blind," said Scarborough. "If you thought that he was going to be prepared for President of the United States, your ideology - let me finish, because we always hear this as Republicans around this table, and we talk about it nonstop about how the Republicans are disconnected from reality - if you believed four years ago that this guy was ready to be President of the United States, then Donny Deutsch, you allowed your ideology to suspend your belief. You suspended belief."
Actually, I think Scarborough wanted to say suspended disbelief much as then Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) told Gen. David Petraeus during a hearing years back.
Regardless, Deutsch responded by saying, "What I believed, and I was wrong, I believed that the overall gestalt about the way he was going to get this country to feel."
This resulted in everyone on camera laughing in Deutsch's face - a marvelous moment onto itself which really does explain the overall liberal philosophy in 2008.
As Deutsch exemplified, folks in the media fell in love with an idea and weren't at all concerned with the qualifications, ability, or track record of the person offering it.
That ordinary citizens fell for this is one thing; that virtually all press members bought the snake oil and succumbed to the obvious salesmanship is what's truly disturbing.
Years later during the ensuing election cycle for any of them to have the nerve to criticize the qualifications of any of the GOP candidates without first apologizing for ignoring such an examination back then is the height of gall.

Gesalt and Pepper Spray

Anyone using the word "gesalt" needs to be slapped around the head and then pepper sprayed.
By the way.. Deutch is an inherited quarter Billionaire... in that he inherited $250 million from his dad.
I guess that make him a founding member of the 0.0001%.
I guess money can buy you lots of things -- but common-sense? Not so much.
All of the above Mr Obama? --- How about ALL OF THE BELOW, instead.

Donnie inherited his daddy's ad agency. It is worth noting that his daddy did not think he was competent enough for the job and made sure he was surrounded with very good people. He had little to do with the agency's success and screwed past partners who were. Donnie is the perfect representative of an industry that is the most narcissist of any and generally fails in its campaigns.
What the hell IS 'gesalt',
Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 2:21pm.
What the hell IS 'gesalt', anyway............it sounds like a mineral. There are people who actually use words like that in sentences and expect someone else to know what they're saying???
And, to tell you the truth (I might really be exposing my mediocre IQ here in this post), I could never figure out what 'suspending DISbelief' meant, when Nurse Ratchett said it. It sounds like a contradiction of definitions to me.
Anybody care to edumacate me on this issue???
Gestalt is defined as...
Submitted by drsamherman on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 2:33pm.
..."a configuration, pattern or organized field having specific properties that cannot be derived from the summation of its component parts; a unifed whole" by www.dictionary.com.
In psychiatry, we would simplify this wordy definition to say that "gestalt" is a German school of psychology that teaches that the whole concept is greater than the sum of the parts. In other words, individual ideas (parts of thought) coalesce to form a complete picture that is often different from the sum of the parts. In my psychiatric viewpoint, it means that what each person sees of a situation is often not logically connected e.g. 2 plus 2 does not equal 4, but instead equals 5 if someone wants it to.
In Donnie's case, "gestalt" is just his way of inserting standard liberal intellectual pretension of a concept he is incapable of ever understanding.
Thanks for the definition,
Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 2:53pm.
Thanks for the definition, Doc............and it sure does't sound like Barry to me!!!
'We thought he was a special guy'???? Now that DOES sound like a definition of Barry to most of these delusional idiots who backed him and voted for him...........that WAS their criteria for making the choice!!!
I still hear this Bob Dylan refrain in my mind when I think about these dopes who have finally woken up and realized that they have been scammed bigtime - 'How does it feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel???? How does it feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel'???
Unfortunatly, a lot of them are probably going to vote for this worthless poser AGAIN!!!
Suspending disbelief

Killa,
Doc Sam has answered your "gestalt" question. Since no one else has yet tackled your second I'll give it a shot.
As for suspending disbelief think about watching a science fiction movie. Do you spend the entire time commenting on how unbelievable and impossible everything is or do you just ignore those thoughts (suspend your disbelief) and enjoy the show?
Suspension of disbelief
That's definitely the prevailing view...

I dunno Jer. Seemed more like the other side of the same coin to me (but I am admittedly not the brightest bulb in the lamp).
The first part addressed the audience reaction to reenactments in documentaries of (I presume) actual events. In that case then, yes, the filmmaker is asking the viewer to "create" a belief in that reenactment and accept, or at least entertain the notion, that things happened that way. Suspension of disbelief plays a lesser role there, but the filmmaker still is asking the viewer to ignore any doubts and believe what they are seeing.
Of course that's only a little different IMO from an obviously fictional representation of what is agreed is impossible (hand-held laser weapons, "dog fights" in space, etc.), where suspension of disbelief is vital for the success of the story. For those cases I think the "prevailing view" is more on point.
And to me the Tolkien quote supports the idea of suspension of disbelief rather than disputes it:
The moment disbelief arises, the spell is broken; the magic, or rather art, has failed.
For disbelief to arise it must needs have been put aside, or suspended, lest it intrude on the narrative.
And then there is this part:
If you are obliged, by kindliness or circumstance, to stay, then disbelief must be suspended (or stifled), otherwise listening and looking would become intolerable.
Certainly no big deal one way or the other. Greater issues face us as a nation to be sure!
Cheers!
Greater issues indeed, Model..

Obama lacked the experience and the skills to be an effective President, and the Dems are bitterly disappointed that he hasn't lived up to the image they willingly constructed for him.
The Obama campaign is now going to avoid defending its poor track record by describing any and every Republican candidate as less qualified than Obama. Essentially, they want a Mulligan for Obama's first term; "We had so much to fix that we need four more years to do what we promised to do in the first term."
Deutsch was merely echoing the mantra. Dear Mika does exactly the same almost everyday. "This is a clown act" -- or so we are told. Huntsman generally gets spared this treatment, but he is still less than Obama, according to them.

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 2:24pm.
I've read that Boy Barry has now changed his outlook on the Presidency - he now says that he wants to be a 'really good two-term President' - wasn't he quoted a while back as saying that he'd settle for being a one-term President if things don't go well??
And, as far as being a 'really good two-term President'..............well, he hasn't even started down that road at 3 years into his first term!!!
Of course, I'm well aware that the definition of 'good' has been altered dramatically, as well as the definition of 'smart' and so many other words.

To be a lib means you are always qualified for anything you want. On the flip side a conservative or republican is never as qualified. Idiology is the only thing that counts if you are a lib.
Idiots s and liars, all of them. Could it be that the country is finally waking up to the fact that you can never believe anything any democrat or liberal says?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 11:54am.
why isn't "a strong, competent human being out of a country of 300 million people" amongst the current crop of GOP candidates?
Probably for the same reason this country is outraged whenever granny is strip-searched by the TSA -- nobody wants this to happen to them. Or when the MSM has 40 straight days of "he said macaca" coverage. One little actual or perceived slip of the tongue is enough to send the liberal press into a feeding frenzy. Or when the MSM exposes Joe the Plumber's tax situation after asking a question to a candidate. The MSM seems to think non-related things are important. Or when the MSM advertises "Help us examine Palin's e-mails, and help us dig up dirt on Gringrich". Why would anyone want to expose themselves to a fanatical witch hunt by non-objective people with megaphones?

"Deutsch after he asked why "a strong, competent human being out of a country of 300 million people" isn't amongst the current crop of GOP candidates."
Let's start with Romney who got a Harvard law degree at the same time he got a Harvard MBA. He did not follow in his daddy's footsteps like Donnie and started Bain Capital and was responsible for some very successful turnarounds and companies. What has Donnie done other than inherit his daddy's ad agency and screw partners?
Romney was singularly responsible for taking over a troubled Salt Lake City Olympics and turning that around and into the most successful Olympics in history and the only one to turn a profit. What has Donnie done other than inherit his daddy's ad agency.
I can go on with all of the other candidates - and every one of them is a credible strong and competent candidate versus the completely inexperienced and questionably intelligent Barack Obama even now.
Deutsch is an embarrassment - although not for MSNBC.
Thanks, GAT

Let's see, off the top of my head:
Bachmann is a Tax Attorney and member of Congress; Ron Paul is an Obstetrician and member of Congress; Rick Perry is a jet pilot and Governor of Texas; Santorum is a lawyer and former Senator; Newt is a PhD historian, author of muliple books, part time college professor, and former U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Huntsman is a former Governor, and Ambassador under several administrations.
Don't forget what little Donnie said about Marco Rubio...."a pineapple"....rude latino term for someone brown on the outside, etc.

My answer to him would be, if that person does exist, they have small children and don't want them put through the "Palin Ringer" that the media put her children through. Until the MSM treats the children of Republican the same as they treat the children of Democrats, our side will never get all the good candidates to run that we have. We have to put up with the ones who don't have small children or don't have any children at all.

As to this obsession with "smartest guy/gal in the room"? I read an excellent oped about how Wall Street used to be comprised of "regular joes" who didn't think they knew it all and didn't take such foolish risks. Yes, we had bubbles and they burst, but it wasn't until all the "smart" people started running our institutions that we got *severe* burst bubbles.
We tried "smartest guy in the room" in 2008 in reaction to the meme of stupidity the msm pushed for the previous 8 years, and guess what? Common sense and core values really *are* the best metric!
So stuff it Donny Deutsch. You are *always* wrong in opinion, deed, and thought!!!
