I am less concerned about the nomination of Newt than I am of the establishment punditry and Republican insiders who may help democrats torpedo Newt's campaign against obama just so they can keep control of the Party.  The Republican elites have been fighting against the Conservative rabble since the Goldwater years, almost 50 years now.

http://online.wsj.com/article/declarations.html

Her column tells all sides of Newt.  She ends by saying that "This is a walk on the wild side" when talking about Newt's run for the White House.

I disagree.  What we have now is a walk on the wild and very dangerous side for America.

For all of Newt's shortcomings, and he has many (he's human), he has actually done many great things for this country.  For the life of me, I can't think of a G*d damned thing good that RBFSOB has done for this country or freedom and democracy.  I can certainly see plenty of damage he has done, is doing, and will continue to do if we don't get his ass out of Washington.

For me, it's getting very simple.  Take Newt with his warts, or keep Bambi, who IS a wart, Communist, Fascist, anti-American agitator who will destroy this country as surely as I'm sitting here.

I like the odds with Newt better.  At least there is a shot at surviving this takeover.

As for the "establishment Republicans," they're capitulators.

Texas history

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 11:57am.

Hey Bubba,

Speaking as a Texan, I'm totally with you about O'Bambi who should be named the Destructor of America, but I'm real concerned about Newt as a president.  The more I think about it, the more I think about what happened in Texas a few years ago when we had a Republican run for governor who was all the talk like Newt was(Some of you Texans might remember him).  It was a guy named Bill Clements who then went on a revenge kick that really upended Texas so much so that we ended up with Gov Ann Richards the very next term.  Of course, she gave us Waco(as in let the feds handle it and we know how that turned out) and a few other problems.

I'm just a little concerned that I would see something similar in Newt, and while I have no trouble believing Newt would be better, I'm having a hard time reconciling that.  For the voters, that might be enough to say "oh we can't trust him, let's stick with Obeyme, even though he's taking us to hell."  Newt might end up being one for the GOP folks to hold their noses and vote.

I don't know, I'm still trying to come to terms with it.

As for the establishment GOP, you're damn right.  Boehner and Cantor has got to go, they've screwed the pooch when they had the ball, for example.

I totally understand everything you're saying, jon.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 4:21pm.

I've quit looking for "good news."  now I'll settle for the "less bad news."

For me, it is getting down to who will do the most to reverse the rush to the Left, and actually begin to set us on a path back toward the Right.

A lot of what is being said about Newt (and much more) was said about the Gipper.  The press and the establishment, not to mention the dumbocrats,  tried everything to paint him as totally incapable of being president.  That worked out, because sometimes people rise to the occasion offered by the circumstances of History.

i can only hope that is the case with Newt.  If not, he is still far and away a better choice than electing the RBFSOB who will definitely complete his mission to "fundamentally transform this nation" if he gets four more years.  Newt may be everything people say, but I'm pretty sure he is not a communist dedicated to the overthrow of this country.

I can't say that about Bambi.  Can you?

I'd rather have Marco Rubio right now, today, than anyone, but that just doesn't seem to be in the cards.  He is one person that knows what commies can do to  a country.  His mom and dad taught him well.

I agree, bubba

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 5:54pm.

I hope you're right about Newt.  But at the same time, yes, he would definitely be a far better alternative to the Communist Muslim we have in the WH...I mean Hawaii.  He's never in the WH long enough except to take time to throw out insults like lighting up the Menorah all at once.  And many other instances.

Like you would rather have Rubio, I'm still holding out for Perry because of his performance on Huck's Forum last weekend, and more people realized that he would be a good president, especially with the issues we got going on like border security and the economy as well as the world stage.(don't count him out, until he's actually out)  He's not perfect, but like Newt, he would be a far better alternative to the Communist Muslim we have in the WH.  I know I repeated that, but it bears repeating, people need to understand these things.  Time will tell how it all plays out.

And I've actually been cutting back on anything to do with the news except for a few minutes at a time, and I don't look at it too much for fear of depressing myself especially going into the Christmas holiday season.  But I get enough news to see if all hell's broken loose yet or not.

So there we go and onward.

Ann Richards

I well remember that '90 election.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 9:29pm.

Almost split the Republican party down the middle for those who wanted to roast Clayt Williams over a spit and the other half who wanted anyone else but him. The day he made that stupid remark, everybody cringed and said, "welcome to Austin, Governor Richards".

Ann Richards was a horrible governor. Whenever she wasn't bombed on cheap liquor, she was fighting with the legislature over wanting higher taxes, higher fees, more programs, more spending, etc. When George W. Bush won the election in '94, she went on a revenge binge and the tactless drunk could not keep her mouth long enough. I think her tongue got sunburned. After all of the crap that she pulled while in office, to have the nerve to blame everything on Bush (gee....was she an Obama precursor?) was way over the top. It was very hard to have any respect for the Governor's office when Ann, the 90s Ma Ferguson wannabe, opened her mouth and whined that Texas needed an income tax, more sales taxes, blah blah blah. I wonder how long it took for Bush's staff to rid the governor's office and the mansion of all of the hidden cheap vodka bottles Annie left behind. She was not a happy drunk--she was more like a rattlesnake set upon by a hungry eagle.

A chance to meet her......no way!

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 10:56am.

You might appreciate this, DocSam, but one time in Austin in the month(Dec 1994 if I remember right) after George Bush won governor of Texas, I met up with some friends in Austin for a nice dinner and we went to see Star Trek Generations at a real nice movie theater(can't remember the name of it now, it was near where the old Austin airport was before its new location) and while we were walking in, some guy in a suit came to us and said "Hey, how would you guys like a chance to meet Governor Ann Richards?"

We all looked at each other, chuckled a bit awkwardly and said "No thanks, we're going to see Star Trek.  See ya!"

Apparently she was trying to make some sort of appearance or something, and we talked about it in the theater waiting for the movie to start and thought it was pretty pathetic, but she was not too popular by that time.

I figure some of the other Texans on here might appreciate that little tidbit.

Oh Jon...no way would I want to be anywhere near her...

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 6:23pm.

...after all of the fawning she received for being some kind of Democrat hero for her rancid speech at the 1988 Democrat national convention. I remember watching that speech with another psychiatrist in the physician's lounge as we both pulled a long shift in an inpatient med/psych ward. We both had detoxing alcoholic patients, and we were checking off the symptoms as Annie spewed her hatred for the Bush family. We concluded she was either drunk or otherwise intoxicated because of the nature of her movements and some slurring of speech we observed during her closing. When she became governor, I could only think the alcohol retailers in the state were overjoyed. I have nothing against drinking because I consume adult beverages in moderation.

After left the governor's mansion, she was a sorry sight and quite frankly she became a pariah in and around Austin and San Antonio to some extent because she could not stop bemoaning her loss to Bush. It was rather embarassing to see.

Obama's Campaign for Class Resentment

It's all the fault of the wealthy 1% dontcha know!

As if all that ails us, all that keeps the economy from humming and the middle class from advancing, is a 4.6-point hike in marginal tax rates for the rich.

But the Money Quote is at the end:

He can’t run on stewardship. He can’t run on policy. His signature initiatives — the stimulus, Obamacare and the failed cap-and-trade — will go unmentioned in his campaign ads. Indeed, they will be the stuff of Republican ads.

What’s left? Class resentment. Got a better idea?

Well, I don't know if it's a better idea, but he can always keep blaming Bush

and if that doesn't work, he can blame Bush AND Clinton ( problems of the past 20 years)

(Spare yourself a bunch of the stammering and skip ahead to about 1:40, since the comment comes at the end.)

I'm seein' (still workin' on

I'm seein' (still workin' on my Boy Barry accent!) that the Rooooooskies are really up in arms about the nefarious voting that just took place over there, and especially as it relates to Puuuuutin. And I'm wonderin' what Boy Barry's reaction to this might be, since we KNOW that there is going to be all sorts of hankie-pankie goin' on in our own next election.

On one hand, Barry might be thinkin' that Puuuutin is getting a little 'karma' - you know, for being such an evil and bad guy, because as we all know, our own Petulant Prick is incapable of seeing himself as anything less than a higher and more elevated presence that has ever been bestowed upon this country. But on the other hand - maybe he and his handlers are getting a little nervous about the reaction over there..........it could possibly fortell what could happen here. I don't think that the Rooooskies who are protesting are from either the Arab Spring OR the OWS crowd.

And I've also read that Boy Blahblah - in an interview that will come out tomorrow - talks abuot how he didn't 'overpromise', and that he 'can't control the weather'. Wow..........what ever gave us THAT idea??? And why would he say something like that if he never did it???

Remember Hank Johnson, Guam

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 2:06pm.

Remember Hank Johnson, Guam will tip over? Well he is back at it again. He blamed the NRA and the Tea Party for fabricating Fast and Furious. In doing so he coined a new phrase for the gun grabbers, unlicensed fire arm dealers. There is no such thing but if he thinks Guam will tip over you never know how that mind thinks. This will become as big as gun show loopholes and assault weapons. I guess the Tea Party and the NRA fabricated the murder of Border Agent Brian Terry.

All the rest of the Commucrats on House Judicial Committee must be lawyers for Holder the way they covered for him.  the Commucrats and their lapdog media will not believe that Fast and Furious was a way to get more gun control even though it was discussed in e-mails.

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 4:55pm.

Well, as you know, Rick, the libs not only re-define history, but they've also done a pretty good job of re-defining a lot of our language so that it works for the way they want it....................and they're re-defining a lot of other concepts also - there seems to be a push these days to get people to see that communism/socialism/redistributionism is 'the new cool thing' that will replace our evil capitalistic/free market/entrepuneurism system. So it's little wonder that 'lying' isn't really 'purposely NOT telling the truth, as well as making false statements' anymore.

I think the onus of the anus here is this, Rick - you and I are just NOT 'nuanced' enough to understand the liberal mindset. We're basically simpletons who see things in 'black and white' ('racist' statement alert!!!), when there are all these various shades of gray to hide behind.

I think there's a bit of the "Johnny has a toy and I don't" toddler syndrome. So, after some foot-stomping tantrums, I eventually get the toy, play with it for five minutes and then never touch it again.

However, I also believe there are in most cases more mature, authentic, and positive dynamics involved, and I'm one of those who don't view the gay-marriage issue in the calamitous sense that many here do.

Just a guess, but I will bet dollars to donuts you were a liberal arts major, right? Ha ha, me too! So how did you become a libtard and I became normal? Well, I had 4 brothers and we all grew up in the 60's and 70's just about the same time you and your hippie friends where selling America down the river. But, unlike you, we had good parenting. Sorry to break this to you buddy, but you were lied to by everyone you trusted. That totally sucks I know... but now it;s time to grow up and shed the lie that is liberalism. Can you?

Right, MM...my parents were just awful...

Submitted by Jer on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 5:36pm.

growing up in the Depression, my mom's dad died at age 32 from an allergic reaction to a sulfur shot administered for pneumonia. She was only 10 and arose at 4 a.m. every morning to do farm chores before catching the bus to school. My dad was the youngest of seven kids and didn't have two nickels to rub together.

They both worked their fingers to the bone, met, and married during WWII. He was drafted and was sent immediately to the front lines during the Ardennes counteroffensive in December of 1944. He miraculously survived the war, returned home and through sheer perseverance and an unwavering faith in God, they discovered that hard work is eventually rewarded. My mom and dad were the very embodiment of the American Dream. And if that seems just a little too much syrupy, Norman Rockwellish idealism, I'm sorry. But I couldn't have been blessed with better parents or role models. [It may also comfort you to know that having once been FDR Democrats, they eventually became Goldwater/Reagan Republicans.]

And I regret to break this to you, buddy, but my brother and sister and I are smart enough, and educated enough, and open-minded enough to be capable of separating truth from fiction and distinguishing honesty from duplicity. No offense, but I really don't require your assistance--and certainly not your self-righteous lecturing--in making those distinctions.

I didn't take five jager shots before the quiz but I am sporting a pretty good hangover from last night - it is final exam week after all.

I got a 45.

I'll admit I had to guess at some of the biology and geology ones. And after missing the very first question I thought I was screwed.

The only one I missed that I'm angry about was the one about nanometers. I thought they were asking how many nm in a m rather than a cm so I just picked the biggest number without actually counting the zeros.

Considering what a stickler I am about units on homeworks and labs, I'm sure my students would find that pretty amusing.

I suppose it's of little consolation to you that I missed the nanometer question, too. ;-)

I agonized over it I think longer than any other question, trying to figure some logical path to the correct answer, before finally realizing I didn't have a clue. I of course was familiar with the term "nano", but I don't recall having encountered it--as in nanosecond--until long after my school days. [Heck, we had very little instruction in the metric system in those days.]

In any event, took a wild swing and missed.

I made the mistake with what planet does not have moons because I was thinking that Pluto was to small to attract and hold a moon. How could I ignore that Mars is so close to the Sun that it would be stripped of any body it would attract? DOH!!!

Have you ever noticed on Two and a Half Men (the reruns), the can of Bustelo sitting on the counter in Charlie's kitchen near the coffee maker?  I guess with Limpy Koochie now playing the lead role, they will have to switch from "real" coffee to decaf or even (yuk) hot tea!

Btw, nice to see I can almost hold my own with a real scientist, I'm more of a well-read guy who questions a lot of things and also likes various fields of science(having taken a few more science classes than the average student back then)....and never conforms to a consensus unless it happens to agree with me. ;-)  High school Chemistry was the one I hated.  I blame the teacher though, he was a bit inept, broke his own rules and actually managed to burn his eyebrows off when an experiment involving phosphorous went awry.(he had plasic lens glasses on, but didn't wear safety goggles even though that was one of his rules, luckily he didn't go blind)

But the operative word is "almost."

I actually liked my high school chem class. My teacher was pretty cool - he would lend me his own books on stuff he thought I might find interesting and since he had a background in physics and chemistry I got this insane notion of double majoring in physics and chemistry once I got to college.

But my first 8 am class put a quick end to that idea.

(Don't worry about the moons of Mars thing - it just reminded me of a bit of a dust up The Vet and I had some time back which all got started because of a disagreement about what the objects orbiting Mars should be called)

I actually never took any advanced science glasses -just basic chemistry and biology- but I did take a lot of math. I don't think I got one of the math questions right. I think scalene triangles must be in that new math. Either that or no one had ever drawn a triangle with three unequal sides prior to 1983.

I do know I'm unworthy of challenging anyone about science (or obviously math) any longer so I'll stick to things I know. I'm pretty sure what city I'm in and I'm pretty sure it's still Saturday here. Outside of those two, that quiz has runined my confidence in much else.

I got 43.  A couple of them being wrong was mixing up a couple of terms plus sometimes the questions were not directly trick questions but might as well have been.

I attribute that score to doing a lot(!) of reading plus what I could remember when I took a couple of physics classes and astronomy and biology(got all the cell questions and DNA questions right) classes.

A couple of the others, I just flat out did not know the answer to like values to certain variables that had specific answers that are applied to certain formulae.  I guessed on the "mu" answer and "scalene" answer which I got right.

Good test.

Thanks, BK!

The one about the unit Watt invented was a bit of a trick question considering that the SI unit for power is the watt but he came up with the english counterpart horsepower.

The "mu" one surprised me because of how obscure it is. But that did remind me of something. We do an experiment in one of our lab classes were we use "mu" to represent a certain quantity in an experiment which deals with the Atwood Machine. The quantity involves a ratio of masses and has nothing to do with friction - but every year I get lab reports with students referring to it as "friction".

It took me a little bit to figure out what they were talking about and to realize that some of the students don't understand that we end up using the same symbols for different things in science.

It was time well spent, then. You learned something which you can pass on to your students.

Early on in my career, I taught remedial math to Army troops (this will date me, back in the day when jail or the Army was an option, back when my shiny UF finance degree wouldn't get me a real job in a military community).

One of the hardest concepts to teach was fractions! Particularly multiplication and division of fractions. My D'oh moment came with drawing a pie. Then I started using actual pieces of pie, and it was one of those *snap* moments. Pretty funny, actually, and the class liked it because they got to eat the results.

Every time we do that lab now I make a point of telling them that despite using the same symbol that's used in friction problems this has nothing to do with that. I tell them that we could label the quantity with a smiley face - it doesn't make a difference what we call it.

But then, of course, I get kids who label it with a smiley face in their lab reports - which I'll admit, is kind of funny.

I had a D'oh moment just this last year - and I'm actually kind of embarrassed by it. We were talking about the version of the Ideal Gas Law which uses the unit "mole" to describe the number of gas molecules in a system and it suddenly occurred to me in the middle of lecture that "mol" was short for "molecule".

I stopped and asked the students if that was obvious and they were all pretty much like "yup". How did I never notice that?

Boston rousted the "Occupy" protesters today

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 11:09pm.

Across the country, this is what I read whenever a city finally removes these filthy people: "...so cleaning crews can come in and clean up the filth". And it's not just OWS. How about the filth left behind after o'bama's inauguration? Or after the protesters were removed from the Wisconsin capital? Everywhere the left gathers -- they leave filth behind.

Funny, but how many Tea Parties were held? And I never saw or heard anything like this about them. Instead, the Tea Party people always left the area clean. Quite a difference. Goes to show conservatives are much more environmentally friendly, doesn't it?

And who does o'bama celebrate? The OWS protesters, of course. Says a lot, IMO.

R- Debate (12/10/11) “The Official Grump-Analysis”

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 12:17pm.

Source: “The Grumpy Center for Advanced Studies (GCAS)”

Motto of the GCAS: “Sticky Buns – So wrong on so many levels.”

OVERVIEW: This Saturday evening debate was sponsored by ABC News, Yahoo! News, WOI-TV, the Des Moines Register and the Republican Party of Iowa – It was held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Just six candidates participated (down from the original 473 who initially considered running). Jon Huntsman did not meet the polling requirements required by ABC to participate (which is probably the only thing ABC has done right in this whole nomination process).

THE SETTING: Well, ABC went back to the old standard debate setting of having the six candidates standing behind lecterns and aligned in the standard media trick of having the two front runners share the middle. Of note, the ‘background set’ was divided into a blue side (on the left) and a red side (on the right). Now I’m not a psychologist when it comes to the use of colors, but there was something odd about seeing each candidate having a distinct background color during the ‘close-ups’ when answering the questions. For those of you who keep track of this kind of stuff, the candidates were divided into two teams: The Blue team was (Left to right) Santorum, Perry, & Romney – The Red team (right to left) was Bachman, Paul, and Gingrich.

THE MODERATORS/QUESTIONERS: ABC’s effervescent duo of Diane “Oh it’s so wonderful to be me” Sawyer and Georgie Girl “I’m not a shill” Stephanopoulos both added a new dimension to the debate process… absolute boredom. The questions they asked were only so-so and they concentrated on trying to stir-up trouble between Newt and Mitt, while doing their level best to ignore the other candidates (with the exception of Ron Paul who is probably their choice to go up against the Ear Leader)… Oh sure, they did ask the others some questions, but it was obvious that Diane and George just didn’t have their collective hearts in soliciting inputs from those other candidates.

PARTICIPANT ANALYSIS: (note: This debate did not have a singe theme (except for the boredom thing) as some of the other debate/forums had (i.e. “National Security”). It covered a variety of subjects and was essentially just a rehash of the candidates established talking points.)

This time around (and in the spirit of fair disclosure) I’ll list the candidates in order of my choice for the nomination.

1. Newt Gingrich – Is now my first choice for the nomination... Many shots were fired specifically at Gingrich such as a general question about whether “infidelity” should be considered when selecting a candidate… (preposterously addressed to all the candidates but an obvious set-up to penalize and trap Newt for prior personal mistakes), but he came through it all keeping his calm, enlightened composure. We have to face the fact that when it comes to a debate setting, nobody, but I mean nobody does better than Newt. IMO no other candidate (less Santorum) has “a real vision” for the country.

2. Rick Perry – If Newt falls, I would like to see Perry pick-up the slack… and yes, I know that’s not what will happen. He got very little time in the debate to explain his positions (It seemed to me that he got less time than anyone else)… but what little time he did get, he used effectively. I realize his “conservative cred” isn’t as good as some of the others and he is a lousy debater – but there is something “honest” about him that I like... so sue me!

3. Rick Santorum – While I don’t like the fact that he spends too much of his [precious little] time trying to convince us that he really was the heart & soul of the Senate during his tenure there, it is his unwavering “social and family values” message is getting through. I’m still unsatisfied with his views on the economy and foreign relations (I believe his thinking on these matters is a bit bureaucratic vice in a leadership style). All in all though, I would trust him with the Presidency.

4. Michele Bachmann – Michele has moved into being my 4th place pick simply because SHE IS NOT Ron Paul or Mitt Romney. In this last debate her “target” was obviously Newt and she kept trying to paint him as the “same old Newt” from 1993. In all honesty, I wish she would just drop-out of the race.

5. Willard “Mitt” Romney – Gosh I hope this “preening dilettante” doesn’t get the nomination. I have been patiently waiting for this “all show and no go” person to present a bold plan for the future of our nation, but so far he has only indicated that he would make a good President because he is not Obama (Jimmy Carter maybe, but not Obama). As long as we’re at it, let me also say that I do not for a single instant believe he has the business background he claims to have… My idea of a proper business background is one where there were real consequences for failure (loss of job, loss of income or possessions, having to start from scratch, etc.) – not one where if you (Mitt) failed, you still had a trust fund to fall back on!

6. Ron Paul – Our own squeaky voiced stalwart republican (or independent – depending upon his mood at any given time) was at it once again. This old Muppet-like Gonzo (propped-up by his personal rabble of zombie thinking, reality rejecting ne’er-do-wells) is not just a disaster waiting to happen... He is the living and breathing example of a broken record, or a “one note Johnny” with no sense of rhythm. It is generally said that “No man is an island,” but in Ron Paul’s case, the argument could be made that he is his own asylum.

Very Poetic, Grump

Particularly that asylum jab. That was perfection, served on a plate.

I didn't watch the debate, we were having girl's movie night (alas, I think I left my Bette Davis DVD "The Letter" with a DVD player in Costa Rica for my friend Dominic). So we just basically gabbed and drank martinae, ate bbq'd shrimp, and ignored the debate. Guess I didn't miss much, but I surely enjoyed your synopsis!

Thanks.

Thank you Blonde,

Sounds like you had a better night than I did! I never heard of the movie "The Letter" and thanks for the heads-up that it's a chick-flick - so I probably won't be checking it out! (chuckling out loud here).

Now if you want a great movie for your next "Girls Movie Night"... May I humbly suggest "Cat Women from the Moon," starring Sonny Tufts and Victor Jory... Now there's a Classic!

The Letter

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 2:52pm.

...is one of my Mom's favorite Bette Davis movies. We watched "Now Voyager" last weekend (the cat is away, the mice must play)....chick flicks, all.

As for "chick-flick!!!!", I had to laugh, that is the usual reaction I get when the cat is here.

The ultimate chick flick?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 3:17pm.

I nominate "The English Patient."  I literally fell asleep in that one, after groaning for about an hour.  It would never end!

Seinfeld did a show later about it, and I finally felt vindicated for telling everyone who was telling me what a great film it was, that it sucked.  I was right all along!

Bubba, I'll take your word for it...

... Never saw "The English Patient" myself... but if you're looking for a real snore-fest, check out Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and marvel at how one can produce a 2 1/2 hour movie all just to set-up a 5 second punch line – or maybe another cure for insomnia: “Dancing with Wolves.”

Saw'em both. You're correct.

Do yourself a favor and NEVER watch The English Patient. You would rather be water boarded (Can I say that?), or watch Moochie lecturing us on the benefits of arugula for uppity people.

Bubba - Thanks for the tip! (and the laugh).

Blonde - "Now Voyager"... is that a "Star Trek" spin-off? :o)

Check it out, Grump

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 5:44pm.

Probably my favorite of all time. I love Bette Davis, and Claude Rains (also in Mr. Skeffington), as well as Paul Heinreid.

I love it because it has such a totally corny ending..."Jerry, why ask for the moon, when we already have the stars?".  I clap and hoot every single time.  The cast is spectacular, the clothes are amazing, the characters are sheer perfection of the caricature role each of them play.  Now, Voyager has it all.

And no, it's not a ST spinoff, although I did see someone get stumped by the Kobiashi Maru a while back, here.  I can't wait for that version of the Enterprise to get back on the screen, that was absolutely one of the very best "prequels" ever done.  Bones and his little diatribe about space in his "intro" had me rolling on the floor.  Classic.  They even killed a redshirt.

{Edit}  Now, Voyager introduced the (now classic) lighting of two cigarettes at one time.  My friend had never seen it before and she was wild when that happened (of course mom & I knew it was coming as we've seen it probably fifty or sixty times).

Ok Blonde - You win!!!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 6:28pm.

I realize my taste in entertainment is not wide enough to include “tear-jerkers,” and you’ve got the better of me when it comes to naming (and defending) those type of movies… But thanks for the link to “Now Voyager” because now that I have read the plot - I won’t have to watch the movie. :o)
And PLEASE!... Don’t come back at me with “Magnificent Obsession” because I’ll get physically sick!
“Oh, John…”
“Oh, Marsha…”
“Let’s not worry about dinner, we have Milk Duds”
“Oh, John…”
“Oh, Marsha…”

In short - there are essentially two kinds of old movies I can’t stand… Those old (or new) tearjerkers and movies featuring “singing cowboys.”

Awful!

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 5:33pm.

Torturous crap, that movie.

There are nothing like the old movie stars in black & white for chick flicks. Mildred Pierce, (Joan Crawford), Imitation of Life (Lana Turner, although in color, 50's), Bette Davis (Now, Voyager, Dark Victory, Mr. Skeffington, The letter), on and on.

There is a recent remake of Mildred Pierce from HBO with Kate Winslet in the Joan Crawford role.  My mother enjoyed it.

Last night a station showed the Bob Hope movie where he refers to zombies on Cuba as Democrats.  Not his best movie and it certainly won't pass muster with the politically correct crowd, but his line about zombie Democrats even made Hope smile a little bit.

Thanks Grumpy, I stopped

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 12:50pm.

Thanks Grumpy, I stopped watching after Romney made the 10 grand bet with Perry. Was tired and had been out all day so I did not have the patience to sit through it all.

I am with you on Romney and I myself would prefer Perry over Gingrich at this point due to his executive experience and his strong support of the 10th Amendment.  But I think in a debate with President Downgrade Gingrich would wipe the floor with Obama and take his lunch money.  I do not see Perry having that ability.

Thanks Scuba… Also had to skip most of the debate last night

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sun, 12/11/2011 - 1:46pm.

Had to get up early this AM to watch the debate here: http://www.2012presidentialelectionnews.com/2011/12/video-watch-the-enti...

Last night (after leaving the chat room), the video feed from the debate started going wacko (the internet broadcast engineer must have been a Paul-bot) and “pop-ups” were all over the place. Bottom line was that I had to turn it off after only getting about 20 minutes or so of the debate.

That occurred last night between Acapulco and Mexico City. Because a certain someone flies home tomorrow from the former, through the latter. And I've not heard a word from him today....I know there was no major building damage, but I am concerned about the flights.

Alas.
