Eleanor Clift: Herman Cain Got 'Free Ride' From Media Until Politico Hit Piece

There have been a lot of ridiculous comments made in the past week since Politico published its hit piece on Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, but one of the most absurd yet came from Newsweek's Eleanor Clift this weekend.

Appearing on PBS's McLaughlin Group, Clift actually said, "This is the press doing what the press should be doing, and they should have done due diligence on this candidate earlier on...He got a free ride for a good long while." (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK CONTRIBUTING EDITOR: Well, there were financial settlements that were made, and the women’s anonymity so far has been protected. I'll bet if this story continues to play out the women may step forward and we may hear their side. But Pat says on the one hand he is being victimized because he's black and because he’s a conservative. But on the other hand there may be some substance to the charges. I mean, this is the press doing what the press should be doing, and they should have done due diligence on this candidate earlier on. I think there was an assumption and there still is an assumption that he is unlikely to be the Republican nominee, and he is very unlikely to be president. So he got a free ride for a good long while.

If Cain DID get a 'free ride'

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 5:39pm.

If Cain DID get a 'free ride' by the MSM............I sure as hell didn't notice it!!! They've been all over the 'pizza boys' case from day one - and from every angle possible..............of course Clift woudn't know - she IS part of the delusional MSM and beltway mentalilty, and has no clue as to what really goes on out here in the 'real world'.

Compared to whom?

Just to make the comparison fair, let's pick another Black politician, oh, let's say Obama. Cain got a free ride compared to Obama? Eleanor, you got to be kidding.

The Day the Music Died...

Submitted by Annie Ashe Fields on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 6:03pm.

So... Ellen, honey... In order to be SCRUPULOUSLY fair, you'll send your attack dogs to gather anonymous sources making vague claims on something that maybe happened in a restaurant and radio station hallway witnessed by people who also withhold details though they're not bound by legal covenant... on OBAMA... RIGHT?

Hmmm... Let's print a story that says a married Obama got a Lewinsky in a limo in Chicago in 2006 ... by a guy...

Nah.

Too ridiculous.

Cuz there were all those bimbo-eruptions and all those old girllfriends of Obama's we know abou...

Nevermind.

PREDICTION: Political historians will write about this moment as "the day the slime-music died" in politics. Fifteen years after the broad entrenchment of Fox/talk radio/internet, the liberal media could no longer lie with impunity, and THIS was their last rodeo. Herman Cain will ride this backfire right into the White House.

Remember where you heard it first ;)

Sounds to me like Eleanor's suggesting his free-ride was in the back of the bus. Racist!

Can't really fault Eleanor.

Submitted by Jerry on Sun, 11/06/2011 - 8:50pm.

Can't really fault Eleanor. She and everyone else knows that Republicans don't get free rides. They pay their own way and pay for those who don't pay their own way also. So, Obama getting a free ride from the MSM (D) for 4 years is nothing out of the ordinary, but rather it is to be expected.

Cain is simply paying his press dues and Obama's too. And typical Democrat Eleanor, thinks Cain is not paying his fair share.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

That works too rockyracoon. When she gets going it really is like fingernails on chalkboard, huh?

I really do try to listen to her, so when I heard Cain's "excuse me" played over and over, it reminded me of all the times she used it, and how for her it really was a weapon, to shut down others, whereas Cain used it like a normal, regular person would!

Due diligence?  Is she kidding?  These were unsubstantiated accusations from anonymous sources.  Normally, this would be referred to as slander.

The public implosion of liberals and the MSM gets more entertaining each day.
