Alan Colmes Blames Herman Cain for Media Firestorm Over Politico Hit Piece

By Noel Sheppard | November 05, 2011 | 17:12

Noel Sheppard's picture

Alan Colmes on Saturday blamed Herman Cain for the media firestorm that occurred after Politico released its now infamous hit piece on the Republican presidential candidate.

As the panel on Fox News Watch discussed a Media Research Center study concerning the coverage of this incident versus how the press handled three sex scandals involving former President Clinton, Colmes actually said, "The reason the numbers are so different is because Herman Cain unlike Bill Clinton was out front on all of the media outlets talking about this" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JON SCOTT, HOST: The Media Research Center, which is a conservative watch dog group, it merits mention, looked at morning and evening newscasts on ABC, NBC, CBS. Here’s what they found: in the days since Politico broke this story, for Cain there were a total of 50 stories in the first three days. After the Paula Jones scandal broke for President Clinton back in 1994, there were a whopping one story.

ALAN COLMES: Can I address that?

ANDREA TANTAROS: No, I’m going to address it. It’s my turn.

COLMES: There's a reason for this.

TANTAROS: Because remember, the Clinton…

COLMES: And when would that have been?

SCOTT: Three stories after Kathleen Willey accused the President of having groped her in 1997. And three stories after Juanita Broaddrick came forward in February of 1999 to say that Mr. Clinton had raped her. Alright, Andrea.

ANDREA TANTAROS: Well, that’s because the Clinton campaign told the media and the media obliged that this was a private matter, this was a distraction, even though she was a state employee and even though he ended up paying her $850,000, exponentially more than the Cain settlement, the media backed off that one. Now, I do agree the Cain campaign completely bungled this. As someone who’s worked on campaigns, who’s dealt with these types of scandals, they did screw it up from the start. But I will say this: there are no details yet, and I believe that if Politico had the details, and they would have been salacious, they would have used them. So that's telling me that this really isn't a big deal. Also the number of the settlement is very small. But, again, the AP went with an anonymous source on Wednesday. This is not good journalism here, just quoting all of these anonymous sources.

COLMES: I’d like to address those numbers. The reason the numbers are so different is because Herman Cain unlike Bill Clinton was out front on all of the media outlets talking about this, doing interview after interview as soon as this broke, changing the story numerous times. Bill Clinton, the accusee of who you mentioned previously, wasn't out talking about it. Herman Cain has created a media firestorm because of the way he’s reacted to it.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Yeah, Cain's reaction is why Politico has now run more stories on this subject in the past six days than they did Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's ties to domestic terrorist Bill Ayers or his connection to convicted real estate developer Tony Rezko.

It's also why CNN has now covered this so-called scandal more than it did Obama's association with Ayers, Rezko, and the America-hating Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

Having watched Colmes for years, I've always wondered if he really believes the nonsense that comes out of his mouth when there's a microphone near it, or if he's just one of the Left's best shills.

Readers are encouraged to review Scott Whitlock's entire report "Networks Hit Cain Story 50 Times in Less Than Four Days; Ignored Clinton Scandals."

the gold standard for liberal lunacy

Submitted by Cho Yi Fan on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 5:39pm.

While I like Fox news one sure way to get me to change the channel is
to bring on Alan Colmes. His arguments always defy logic and some of his
ideas are simply wacko. Like the idea that Bill Clinton was out in front
of his numerous scandals. Clinton was really a stand up guy?
I can usually listen to liberal lunacy but Colmes takes lunacy to a whole level.
To me listening to him is a waste of valuable time.

no Cain "settlement"

Submitted by spepper on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 5:54pm.

Cain did not issue a "settlement" to his accuser-- the NRA (restaurant assn., not the gun club) did that! Cain has repeatedly stated that he originally knew nothing about a settlement-- which is the TRUTH-- the accuser's termination of employment and severance compensation was from the NRA, NOT CAIN. And this was a totally separate event from the "nondisclosure agreements" that BOTH Cain AND his accuser signed separately, regarding the "accusation event".

True!

Submitted by Fan77 on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 6:17pm.

But let's not forget, that a "severance" settlement is common. A regular practice where employers pay up to reduce the risk of lawsuits from fired employees.

Non-disclosure agreements is also common when an employee is fired... as I mentioned above, the employer simply protects himself from the employee for being fired.

All of a sudden, MSM doesn't understand common practice ....sheesh! .... But then again, this is simply partisan ... isn't it?

According to a lady on Mark

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 6:18pm.

According to a lady on Mark Levin the other who had litigated things like this said that the Hermanator probably didn't know a thing about it. That is that he knew that maybe someone had made an accusation but he never knew the outcome. Besides the woman making these claims won't come forward telling me she is full of crap.

That's a toughie. Colmes is like a self-parody, but Beckel actually shows his contempt for the audience--playing on his Crackberry or putting his feet up like his hero Obama. Both are not mental giants. Beckel is probably smarter--he always seems sort of bemused--like "you know this is just my day job."

Cain according to all reports was NON_SEXUAL, 64 stories, Clinton rapes, assaults, fondles, cigars, lies etc, etc, etc and we get what 7 in the same timeframe?

Remember also, THX to NB the other day posting FACTS, not only were there few stories, they pretty much all QUESTIONED the victims of said rape, assaults, fondling etc, etc.

Knew this would happen

Submitted by MCLIJazz on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 6:49pm.

I can only take Alan in small doses.  22 minutes of him on the weekend is not what I need.  His shtick never changes.  Fox News Watch is a show about media coverage, but Alan turns it into a political moral equivalency show when he's on.  With all due respect, it's such a relief when I check the Fox News Watch webpage on Thursday or Friday and he isn't listed as the second liberal on the panel.  Then I'll DVR the show and watch it.  Otherwise, why bother hearing "the right/far-right/Bush did it, too" whenever it's his turn to speak?  So, I'm hoping someone like Kirsten Powers is on the panel instead next week.

Submitted by StarAZ on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 7:07pm.

Colmes and that giggling Miller woman are the worst things to ever happen to News Watch, but if Cain did use his "humor" and old guy thoughtlessness and tackiness to try to sweet talk women, then whose fault is all this? Sure, we don't have details yet, yes, Clinton skated more than this, etc etc etc--but why were these women paid off? Colmes, for all his predictable yackety-yack, did not pay them.

I've had enough "discussions" with liberals to know that no amount of factual information can ever persuade them they are wrong.

They simply ignore them and keep coming back with one excuse, explanation, or rationalization after another, always trying to get in the last word, never really disproving your facts and what you say, but simply trying to overwhelm you with slogans and talking points to respond to, accusing you of bias in your thinking and flaws in your observations and perception until you realize it's just silly to keep wasting your time trying to expose the flaws in their position and to pull them into reality.

It's a game to them.

Old story abt diff. btwn. Dems & GOP sums it up

Submitted by Annie Ashe Fields on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 10:24pm.

Walking down the street, a Conservative and a Progressive come across a bloody, beaten old man. They look up from the victim just in time to see what must be the perpetrator booking it down the street and around the corner out of sight.

The Republican, leaning over the poor man, comforting him, says to his friend: "Hurry! We've got to catch him."

The Democrat, unmoved, having not lifted a finger to help the victim nor moved an inch replies: "Yes, he (the runner) OBVIOUSLY needs our HELP!"

Colmes, like all rudderless Democrats, is more interested in aggrandizing his cause then fixing the problems on the ground.
