After Meeting With Ahmadinejad Fareed Zakaria Wants U.S. to Soften Iran Policy

After his much-publicized interview with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last week, CNN's Fareed Zakaria thinks America has to change its attitude towards one of its biggest enemies.

On Fareed Zakaria GPS Sunday, the host began the show declaring "Obama's Iran policy looks a lot like George W. Bush's - pressure and more pressure," and that "Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

FAREED ZAKARIA, CNN: Regular GPS watchers and readers will know that I was in Tehran last week to interview President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. You can watch excerpts of the interview here. But being in Iran made me think about our policy towards that country, which strikes me as stuck in a time warp.

You will remember that early in the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama signaled that he was going to have a different foreign policy than George Bush - and he chose as his example, Iran. He argued that simply pressuring the country was not a policy and Obama offered to talk to Iran's leaders. Well, two years into his presidency, Obama's Iran policy looks a lot like George W. Bush's - pressure and more pressure.

The punitive tactics have paid off in some measure. Iran faces economic problems. But they are also having a perverse impact on the country, as I witnessed last week. The sanctions are stifling growth, though not as much as one might imagine. So the basic effect has been to weaken civil society and strengthen the state - the opposite of what we should be trying to do in that country. By some estimates, Iran's Revolutionary Guard - the hard-line element of the armed forces, supported by the supreme leader – now controls 40% of the economy.

Is that the goal of our policy?

In fact, what is our goal? Is it to overthrow the Iranian regime? Is it to make it bleed until it gives up its nuclear program? A wholesale revolution continues to strike me as a distant prospect. The regime still has some domestic support, and it uses a mix of religious authority, patronage and force quite effectively.

And we keep forgetting the inconvenient fact that, even if the regime changed, the nuclear energy program - which is popular as an expression of Iranian nationalism and power - will continue. Even the leaders of the Green movement strongly support that program.

Obama should return to his original approach and test the Iranians to see if there is any room for dialogue and agreement. Engaging with Iran, putting its nuclear program under some kind of supervision and finding areas of common interest (such as Afghanistan) would all be important goals.

It might not work - the Iranian regime is divided and often paralyzed itself - but it's worth trying. Strategic engagement with an adversary can go hand in hand with a policy that encourages change in that country. That's how Washington dealt with the Soviet Union and China in the 1970s and 80s.

Iran is a country of 80 million people, educated and dynamic. It sits astride a crucial part of the world. It cannot be sanctioned and pressed down forever. It is the last great civilization to sit outside the global order. We need a strategy that combines pressure with a path to bring Iran in from the cold.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

What's interesting here is that Zakaria while in Tehran last week also noted that Iran was the big winner from Obama's decision to pull all American troops out of Iraq by the end of this year.

Now he thinks we've got to soften our position towards our mortal enemy.

As such, Ahmadinejad has had two major victories in the past ten days: America is withdrawing from Iraq and one of Obama's advisers in the media has called for a change in U.S. policy towards Tehran.

As Charlie Sheen would say, "Duh, winning."

Exactly what more does

Exactly what more does Zakaria want Obama to do...offer to help them with their "peaceful" nuclear program?
Oh, wait!! He suggested that!

Why?

Submitted by pcnav on Mon, 10/31/2011 - 9:28am.

Why would we listen to Zacharia, a foreign national in regard to US foreign policy. Zacharia may be a naturalized citizen but he has proven time and again that, being reared in a foreign country he has no connection with the true american spirit. True americans do not sit down for interviews with dictactorships nor do they advance the dictactor's goals in our country. Go to hell Zacharia!

What about all those who died

Submitted by pilgrim4jc on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 11:12am.

What about all those who died in Iran marching for freedom a few years back? Oh that's right liberals only care about those who protest successful people.

You're not alone!

What other evidence does ZAKARIA need?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 12:19pm.

Isn't that when o'bama let off the pressure, just to "see if he could accommodate Iran's wishes"? o'bama could have supported the freedom marchers, but chose to soft-peddle the regime, instead.

ZAKARIA: It is the last great civilization to sit outside the global order.

The global order. Not just the United States relations. Yeah, it is just us, we need to change the way we treat them. Yeah, that'll do the trick.

Areas of common interest, such as Afghanistan?

Submitted by UpNorth on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 11:16am.

Yeah, that's one area, Obama can't wait to run from Afghanistan, Iran can't wait to run into Afghanistan. Matter of fact, some of the Quds force and their IED's are already there.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

Stupid morons, or subversives?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 11:21am.

People like Freak really have me confused.  I can't figure out if they are really as stupid as they appear, or they are brilliant and want to totally subvert this country so that the crazies can rule the world.

Best part of it is, it doesn't matter in the end for them.  They will be the first ones that the islamo-Fascists "purge" from the new world society that they plan on bringing to your local community!

I guess that makes them stupid, subversive, morons!  That is the most dangerous kind.  Just look how well one of them is working out in the White House.

And the really, really, REALLY best part is .... after the USA is gone, the Communists, the Fascists, AND Islam can REALLY fight it out to see which one of their bat shiite crazy philosophies will prevail!

Are you ever glad some days, that you ain't going to live forever?

The "Mayor of Teheran" is playing divide and conquer

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 12:16pm.

Ahmadinejad is playing the divide and conquer between Israel and the US. He is of the opinion that he needs to take Israel out first, because the US is a coward and will not go after him, so he can then take us out at his leisure. Don't be surprised when Israel is nuked and eradicated and then a suitcase bomb takes out one or more US cities. The cowards in Washington will then beg for sharia law to be imposed on us. Cowards like Ron Paul, Barack Hussein Obama, Hillary Clinton, Romney and a host of the other "intelligentsia" of Washington would do us in in order to live in accord with this terrorist that was one of the people who took over the US Embassy in contravention of international law (which the "intelligentsia" revers over the US Constitution) and spat upon us when in NYC after the UN speech in 2007.

Remember when ...

Submitted by Fredy on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 12:56pm.

CNN was forced to admit that they had LIED for YEARS in their reporting about Iraq?

CNN was given access for inside interviews in exchange for LYING to the American people about the oil for food program. Did anyone ever investigate how much cash was handed to CNN 'reporters' in that deal?

Now we have another CNN reporter, Zakaria, going to Iran and comming back with absurd claims that a dictator that shoots his own people in the street is a 'good man'.

Is this the best insanity that Iranian money could buy from CNN?

Submitted by Dave. on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 2:39pm.

After all, his fellow comrade mullah Barry Hussein Obama has done nothing except appease the Iranian Hitler, and what is more he is doing all he can to help to remove moderate Arab leaders and install like-minded Israel-haters in every position of power in the ME that exists.

Zakaria should be happy as Hell.

Fakeed says that the Iranian

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 3:29pm.

Fakeed says that the Iranian nuclear program is 'popular as an expression of nationalism and power'............which is quite an admission, given that his Boy Barry is dead-set against our own nuclear program, and will continue to dismantle it as much as he possibly can. And Fakeed also says that the 'Green party' endorses it.............there'a a 'Green party' in Iran??? I think Iran holds the record for the dirtiest cities on the planet - which is quite an accomplishment, given the competition.

We all know Iran's stance on israel...........but the fact of the matter is that the USA is also their sworn enemy, so I guess ol' Fakeed is suggesting that we bow down and roll over for these guys. Well, since he's a 'foreign policy adviser' to Boy Barry, that should be a pretty easy sell, since Boy Barry is quite adept at groveling and apologizing - as long as it's not to 'real' Americans.
