Rumsfeld on Cancelling NYT: What Krugman Said Was 'So Repulsive and Repugnant' I Had Enough
Former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld has had a subcription to the New York Times for roughly 60 years.
As he told radio host Joe "Pags" Pagliarulo Tuesday, he cancelled it as a result of Paul Krugman's "repulsive and repugnant" blog posting on 9/11 (video follows with transcript and commentary):
JOE ‘PAGS’ PAGLIARULO, RADIO HOST: Sunday, Paul Krugman of the New York Times. This guy, who I’ve got no respect for, never have, but because of our freedoms and liberties here in the United States is allowed to say vile and disgusting things. You made a personal reaction to what he had to say on 9/11.
DONALD RUMSFELD, FORMER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: I did. I, I read what he said and found it so repulsive and repugnant and untrue that I just decided that I’d had enough of the New York Times. You know, you’re right, everyone can say anything they wish, and they do, and that’s fine. It’s a wonderful aspect of our great country. But we don’t have to buy the newspapers that promote that kind of terrible, terrible, terrible thoughts.
PAGS: As he’s got the freedom to write it, you’ve got the freedom to choose whether you want to read it.
RUMSFELD: Exactly, and I made my choice and cancelled my subscription here at the office, and I’ve already cancelled my subscription at home. So, it’s, it’s over. I started reading the New York Times when I went to college, and would read the Sunday New York Times back in the 1950s, and it’s been a long run, but it’s over.
As people are likely aware, Rumsfeld announced this via Twitter Monday:

Makes you wonder how many other people cancelled their subscriptions as a result of Krugman's comments.
The folks at the Times must be so proud.

He wouldn't recognize it if they did.
I do hope that they pad his office, however.
I suspect they view offending Rumsfeld as a success

I strongly suspect that the NY Times considers offending someone like Rumsfeld to be a positive thing.
I imagine Krugman walking back into the office to a surprise party in his honor, with a "Mission Accomplished" banner in the background.
After all they've been through, I can only conclude that the Times doesn't care about their subscriptions going away. They'll continue printing "all the news that fits" until they have to close their doors, then retire feeling that they've accomplished something. Yeah, they managed to destroy a major newspaper.
That reminds me of the idiot former governor of New York...

If they keep hemorrhaging subscribers at this rate, they're going to need a bailout.

In a way, my last statement is not entirely true. I have read the NY Times via ABCCBSNBCMSNBCCNN and sometimes HLN and CNBC (since these enterprises often follow the lead of the NY Times).
In addition, I subscribe to another enterprise that follows the lead of the NY Times: The LA Times.

What was Rumsfeld doing with a NYT subscription in the first place? The garbage the liberal media craps out of its mouth is almost treasonous.

He likes the NYT would be my guess. He does have a right ot subscribe to whatever publication he wishes. Are you saying that people only read it so that they can agree with it? Some people read it so that they can report what the other the "other side" has to say.

There are plenty of ways to learn what liberals are up to without supporting the gray lady. Liberals have dominated the media for decades, there's nothing wrong with breaking down the monopoly. I'm glad Rumsfeld figured it out.

The New York Times is the newspaper of record right after the major establishment journal Foreign Affairs which Krugman has penned articles for.>>>This is titled {Is Capitslism Too Productive?} http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/53393/paul-krugman/is-capitalism-...
This Foreign Affairs' article dealt with how to use the military utilzing new technology. Rumsfeld chose these words to make his case for disarming America's nuclear stockpile: http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/58020/donald-h-rumsfeld/transform...
"How will the United States defend itself against the unknown, the unseen, and the unexpected ...reduced nuclear forces"
Paul Krugman, a CFR member, has written numerous articles for Foreign Affairs magazine, the official publication of the Council on Foreign Relations, an organization that both gentlemen contribute articles to.
Krugman's NYT piece: "The atrocity should have been a unifying event, ...the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons."
If Krugman hates war so much then why is he a member of an organization (he writes for its official organ -Foreign Affairs) that promotes war? It's the same publication that Donald Rumsfeld has also contributed at least one article on regarding the role of a 21st century US military in which he advocates reducing nuclear weapons.
Hooray for Rummy! I only hope other people who...

call themselves Republicans, do the same. The NY Times can not survive with a liberal only subscriber base even in New York. I venture to guess that there are not that many Liberals who are willing to shell out the money it takes to subscribe. They'd rather spend their money on porn.
