Scarborough Takes on Colin Powell: Him Going on TV to Defend Himself Means Cheney Was Right About Heads Exploding

By Noel Sheppard | August 29, 2011 | 11:36

The liberal media are predictably gushing over Colin Powell's supposed rebuke of Dick Cheney on Sunday's "Face the Nation."

Bucking the trend was Joe Scarborough Monday who on the MSNBC program bearing his name said Powell going on "Face the Nation" to defend himself proved Cheney right about heads exploding over his new book (video follows with transcript and commentary):

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JAMIE GANGEL, NBC: This book is going to make a lot of people angry.

DICK CHENEY: There are going to be heads exploding all over Washington, Jamie.

GANGEL: You know that.

CHENEY: Yes

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BOB SCHIEFFER, “FACE THE NATION”: In some ways he’s no kinder to your successor Condoleezza Rice than he was to you.

GENERAL COLIN POWELL: Well he's taken the same shots at Condi, with an almost condescending tone. She tearfully did this, or that. And he's taken the same shots at George Tenet. And he has also, in some ways, indicated he didn't always approve of what President Bush was deciding. And there's nothing wrong with saying you disagree. But it's not necessary to take these kind of barbs and then try to pump a book up by saying heads will be exploding…I think, Dick overshot the runway with that kind of comment.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Moments later, Scarborough commented:

JOE SCARBOROUGH, HOST: You know, Jamie, it’s interesting. Colin Powell said to Bob Schieffer yesterday in a fascinating interview that he thought that Dick Cheney may have overshot the runway by suggesting that heads would explode. The mere fact that Colin Powell, who protects his image I think more, in a more extreme way than anybody else that I’ve known in Washington, D.C., over the past 25 years, would go on a Sunday show to respond to things that Colin Powell [Dick Cheney] wrote about him, I think that would qualify for heads exploding.

I guess Scarborough didn't realize he was committing heresy here.

First, he criticized the sainted Powell for protecting his image "in a more extreme way than anybody else that I’ve known in Washington, D.C., over the past 25 years."

That's not something you normally hear on television, especially MSNBC.

But his real liberal media transgression was defending the totally reviled by the Left Cheney from Powell's attacks.

What must have also shocked viewers was NBC's Gangel agreeing with Scarborough:

GANGEL: Right, that’s, I think that’s correct. And look, Dick Cheney is also very complimentary of Colin Powell and of Condoleezza Rice and of George Tenet in other ways, but he says that these are, he’s giving boths sides of the story.

Colin (I hate Republicans) Powell

Submitted by nvmsw on Mon, 08/29/2011 - 12:15pm.

Now Colin Powell has got a good excuse to endorse the Messiah for 2012 election. Now he will say, "Dick Cheney has taken the party to far right." Couple of years ago he was blaming Palin saying she has taken the party to far to the right. Will someone please tell General Powell that he is the one who has gone to the left and his favorite Manchild President is by far the most Liberal President in U.S. history. Please Mr. Powell get a job at MSNBC so you can trash Republicans 24/7. I urge to the Republican party to ignore Powell from now on. There is absolutely no need to have people like Powell in the party. He agrees with everything that Obama has done so far to this country. I am just waiting for him to start blaming Bush (just like his Boy does) for everything.

shit....LOL.....if JFK were alive today, he'd be a Republican....that's how far left the liberal asshats in the Democrat party have gone....and how much back to center the right wing has come.....except for the TEA partyiers....

Why?

Submitted by red-sox-rudy on Mon, 08/29/2011 - 5:08pm.

Granted he was more muscular on foreign policy than some in the party at the time. However the conservatives of the day constantly decried him as soft, they wanted a full fledged invasion of Cuba. Domestically he was very much a liberal. I know conservatives like to point to his large tax cut as a way to say he was one of them, a supply sider, but they are wrong. When he proposed dropping the top marginal rate from 91% to 70% it was part of a broader Keynesian policy to spur economic growth. He didn't think he could get the spending portion through a hostile congress until after the tax cuts. As he told his chief economic adviser Walter Heller, "First we'll have your tax cut, then we'll have my expenditures program." Plus a good portion of LBJ's "Great Society" policies were JFK initiatives that were only passed after the Democratic landslide of 1964.

So no JFK wasn't really a conservative.......but nice try.

I don't think I am really trying to hide my outlook. Do you mean to tell me one dissenting opinion on this site bothers you that much? It is necessary to always have your own worldview regurgitated back to you? Or you could just tell me where I am mistaken in my analysis.

Nah, rude rudy---

you're not trying to hide your outlook.

There are a number of dissenting opinions vis-a-vis mine on this site; and they don't 'bother' me in the least.

If someone regurgitates on me, I shall puke on them in return.

You are a liberal, and if reading posts on a conservative site does not somehow manage to get through to you where you are mistaken in either your outlook or any analysis you perform from a liberal perspective; then there is nothing that I can say that will sway you from your "facts".

Prancing Pony

Submitted by Kuso Jiji on Mon, 08/29/2011 - 12:18pm.

Powell has become the media's prancing pony. Anytime they need a Republican to talk bad about another Republican from the Bush Administration, they put a call in to the forgotten General who is more than willing to read from the script.

The outcry today is "Judge me 95% favorable on the color of my skin, 5% on the content of my character".

You see, the words of Dr. King comprise a Living Document, capable of meaning different things to different ages of humanity.

Is it any wonder that Homosexual is the new Black?

How sadly true that is.

Submitted by Lipton on Mon, 08/29/2011 - 4:03pm.

I don't think most people were brought up to really understand what King's dream was. I know I wasn't. I was just taught about how badly the people were treated, and of course the assassination, but never once was the philosophy that he wanted discussed. Even then in high school in the 80's the King legacy was being altered (in my opinion).

Colin Powell, cheap shots and Richard Arrmitage

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Mon, 08/29/2011 - 12:46pm.

I watched with amusement as Bob Schieffer tossed Gen. Powell a softball question about wherther or not his "head was exploding" and then allowed him to go on for several minutes UNINTERRUPTED to recite his bullet point rebuttles to what he felt were "cheap shots".

I was ASTOUNDED, however, that he managed to reveal he did know about Richard Armitage's role in outing Valerie Plame and said he (Powell) was order to keep quiet AND that all that drama and subsequent investigations might have been avoided!

A BOMBSHELL and Bob Schieffer didn't blink an eye - just continued with the narrative.

Journalism in the msm is so dead!

the baby butcher whines on, deserving all he's getting & more. That Bush could have appointed baby butchers like Powell & Condi to head State all those years only confirmed I was right not to vote for him either time. Thankfully Bush still held the reins enough to keep them from letting their who ring for infanticide promote it in the world community like Monica's boyfriend's woman is doing now.

Colin Powell such a

Colin Powell is nothing but a whinning, racist fool. Geez, he supported Obama during the 2008 election. What does that say for his smarts. To support someone just because of their skin color. Isn't that just as bad as voting against someone because of their skin color? Oh, sorry, I forgot, it is not racist to vote against a white person because of their skin color if you are black.

the way top leaders of any party or belief should be! He is just such a breath of fresh air in the attack driven, reality avoiding, bs spewing politicians and the media that support them.

This guy would be a god send for the republican party were he to rise to a high enough level to be widely followed and seen. What he says about dealing with the issues and facts as opposed to a quick , dismissive remark that 'says it all.' Why people accept, even embrace this type of empty rhetoric is beyond me.

At 4:00 -4:44 he says it very well.
