HBO Renews 'Real Time with Bill Maher' for Tenth Season

By Noel Sheppard | August 02, 2011 | 21:04

Noel Sheppard's picture

Two weeks after Bill Maher hosted one of the most vile political discussions ever broadcast on national television, the host of HBO's "Real Time" was rewarded with a tenth season of his despicable show.

TV By The Numbers reported Friday:

HBO has renewed Real Time with Bill Maher for its tenth season, launching in early 2012, it was announced today by Sue Naegle, president, HBO Entertainment.

“Bill Maher is a fearless, funny and totally original observer of the modern world,” noted Naegle. “I look forward to bringing his thoughtful and irreverent insights to our viewers next year as another presidential election approaches.”

Thoughtful insights?

Like saying on the July 15th installment that former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is the "leader of a strange family of inbred weirdos?"

Or that same evening hosting guests that discussed having hate sex with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Rick Santorum?

Or that same evening having a guest that said of Republicans, "I wish they were all f--king dead?"

Are these the kind of "thoughtful" "insights" HBO's president looks "forward to bringing" to "viewers next year as another presidential election approaches?”

Apparently so.

Don't like Maher very much

Submitted by shawn. on Tue, 08/02/2011 - 9:17pm.

.........however I like HBO. True blood and their original series is good. I would imagine he must have quite a following for HBO to keep him.

Maher is disgusting, so I try to avoid his show.

....making it entirely possible to never stop on BM.

HBO has some of the best series around. They are able to produce the old 70's style miniseries that the regular networks can no longer afford. I read somewhere that Band of Brothers cost about $75 million, but it is the highest selling series ever. Same for Pacific, the costs were in excess of $100M.

I loved Game of Thrones (am reading the books now and looking forward to the next bunch), and HBO also did an excellent remake of an old movie classic (Joan Crawford) Mildred Pierce. They do have some excellent programming, and they also have some real losers, too.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 11:35am.

I was referring only to the Murdoch comparison you made, I suspect you might have been trying to make it sound that way when there was the mention of paying HBO = paying Maher.

There are no vitriolic types like Maher in relation to Fox Corp or Fox News.(Thank God for that!  But the closest comparable one would be Sheppy Smithy even though he's not as bad as Maher)

Newscorp and Rupurt Murdoch

Submitted by shawn. on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 3:22pm.

Make big profits off shows like Glee and Family Guy. Those profits help create money for overhead to pay Seth Macfarland. It also helps hire James Cameron to make a left movie like Avatar which "you" said was a failure.

My point is I like HBO and don't support Maher. Just like watching Fox does not mean you support Seth Macfarland.

didn't say failure

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 3:39pm.

I didn't say Avatar was a failure, I said it wasn't as big a box office success when you look at the number of people.  Yes, it made 2 billion, and yes, it kept it in the black, but the number of people that saw it was hardly impressive compared to other movies.  That's where the money came from mostly, overpriced theaters for 3D effects.

To prove my point, here's a list of the ticket sales of the top 100 movies....remember, ticket sales do not equal profit, it's the number of people that saw the movie that counts.

Ticket Sales

Ben Hur ranks right above it, a movie made 50 years prior to Avatar.

I apologize for getting a bit off topic, but if I got called on something, I will defend my statements and I stand by what I said:  Avatar was not that big of a box office success.

Back to you, Shawn.

No you did not say that

Submitted by shawn. on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 3:51pm.

This is what you said

"20th Century Fox played a gamble and they lost"
"barely breaking even, even if they keep the movie out there for two or three more weeks and ticket sales go down.  To see a true profit(more of that capitalistic greed, right?), they need to at least make 2 to 2.5 Billion dollars.  I don't see that happening at all."

Saying somebody taking a gamble is losing is hardly the same saying it is not a big box office sucess. Nice try though. Funny you accuse me of twisting words

To me making well over a billion dollars profit is not taking a gamble and losing. You also made this bold prediction after the movie was out for a few weeks

Back to you Jon

So?

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 4:31pm.

Last I heard, the production costs(not counting marketing which they spent a lot on as well) was about half a billion.  To break even, on paper, to keep it in the black, a movie needs to make 3 times the costs for the movie production and marketing that went into the costs(unless they changed how they do these things).

Yes, I said that after a few weeks, and yes, I was wrong about them not making it, I'll own up to it.  They broke even on this one though with a little extra, depending on who got what.

The numbers look good until you break it down.  Production costs for the movie (officially, though there's word it was more) was around $237 million plus $140 million or so for domestic marketing(a lot more with global marketing in different languages).  There was a re-release(add 9 or so million to the budget) so they made some more money that way.  There are some other costs that don't often get reported in the books such as financial backers including Cameron himself contributing to the movie.   Unofficial numbers put total costs of the movie around 700 or 800 million, depending on which source you look at.

So fine, I was wrong, the movie did break even with a lttle extra.  Let's get back to the topic at hand, shall we?

I know that could not have been easy after I provided proof of your impetuous assumption. It would have been nice if you addressed the fact that everything I said including Avatar was on topic except for one sentence directed at you. You are the one that got defensive

Hey if you think a billion dollars profit at the very minimum and the 14th highest grossing of all time is not a big deal that is fine

Oh for God's sake.....

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 10:32pm.

You can't just stay on topic, can you?

And I guess you are just doing selective reading after I explained WHY the billion profits doesn't matter on paper when looking at overall costs, but I would expect that from liberals.  What was the phrase for that, oh yeah, cherry picking.  The only thing I was wrong about was the profits but at the same time I wasn't wrong about the ticket sales which is a whole different animal.  Again, more cherry picking.

Oh the hell with it.

No Jon

Submitted by shawn. on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 10:56pm.

You are the one being selective. A billion dollars is a conservatves estimate. Your estimated cost add up to less than a billion. The movie made 2.3 billion. That does not include sales of DVDs either. Gee 14th most tickets sold in over 70 years is a small amount? Well hey Ben Hur selling more tickets sure proves your point.

I stuck to topic, but like you, if I am challenged on something I will defend it. Hey if you think a billion dollars is "'a little extra" perhaps you think our national debt is few house payments?

Do you have Dish? Because if you do, you can sign up for HBO's direct videos, for free. I don't know how long it takes for Dish to let them know you've dropped the HBO package, but you can view the new episodes as soon as they're aired.

I watched most of Game of Thrones that way.

Wake up, conservatives!....If you are an HBO subscriber....you might as well watch Maher. You are paying him either way. If you think watching other programs on HBO and ignoring his show is doing any good....think again. He is paid by the network...not by advertisers or sponsers. Better yet...why not just write a check out to ACORN, the AFL-CIO, SEIU or the Democrat Party? That is where your money is going anyhow....through trickle-up donations by the Hollywood crowd. Nothing on HBO is so entertaining or useful that makes it worth financing Bill Maher's lifestyle and bully pulpit....absolutely nothing!

Not by choice

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 9:51am.

Sometimes there might not be a choice if it's part of a bundled package or if the cable is part of the rent of an apartment like it is at my place.  It's free cable (and I get free internet, high speed using Cat 6 ethernet) but again, it's part of my apartment rent.  It's 120 extra dollars I'm not spending a month(not the same as saving 120 a month, I only saved that the first time the bills stopped)

So I don't have a whole lotta choice when it comes to the channel lineup, I got 2 HBO channels.  Could get more if I bought a converter box but I didn't want to spend the extra money.  I'm fine with what I have and I don't usually watch HBO anyway.  Seems like every time I flip to that channel, Maher's face pops up and I switch it to another channel, ANY channel.

Maher? Who Cares?

Submitted by PaleHorse on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 9:38am.

Long time NB reader. I still can't figure out the obsession with Maher. Sure, he's a complete loser, but he's an almost nonexistent loser. There's an article a day about him on here for no good reason. He's on a Premium Channel and his audience is minimal. Literally couldn't be easier to ignore his drivel. If he wasn't covered on these pages, I'd never have to hear about him.

I agree that Maher should be ignored

Submitted by Lipton on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 11:06am.

as should Kathy Griffin. The guests on his show who spew vile hatred should be called to task depending on their relative prominence in MSM or pop culture. If Maher does any more stints on the Sunday news shows (which he won't do as long as George Will will be ont the show) than yes he should be covered.

As it is I think it is best to treat him as we do a wad of gum on the sidewalk on a hot day.

I'd like to thank Hollywood for renewing my interest in reading.

Actually it's the same thing. Thank God this Commie A-hole is on again close to this upcoming election. He's the perfect poster child for the Progressive Liberal Commies who can't do math, and math is important in this election. The more vile and idiotic he is, the better. The world gets to see just how stupid Americans can be. He regularly calls Americans stupid, unknowingly leading the charge. He's America's shallowest thinker and his arguments are hysterically uninformed and stupid. It's obvious to anyone watching when the applause light goes on, and his small army of trained Commie seals come to life having no idea what he's even talking about. It's the best comedy on TV, as the host is the biggest joke of all.......

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with a guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment

The plot can be hot, simply teeming with sex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It can be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss, who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doin' him dirt
The world is a stage
The stage is a world of entertainment
Hey!

It might be a fight like you see on the screen
A swain getting slain for the love of a queen
Some Shakespearian scene
Where a ghost and a prince meet
And everyone ends in mincemeat

Hip hooray, the American way
