Pat Buchanan and John McLaughlin Finally Silence Eleanor Clift: 'Hold it' - 'Quiet'
There was a truly delicious moment on this weekend's "McLaughlin Group" that's guaranteed to please conservatives from coast to coast.
During a heated discussion about President Obama's call to end tax breaks for corporate jet purchases, Pat Buchanan and John McLaughlin literally silenced Newsweek's Eleanor Clift much to her dismay (video follows with transcript and commentary):
ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK: We should get another view here, when the corporate jet caucus is done convening.
MORT ZUCKERMAN: Oh, that's nonsense.
CLIFT: This is a symbolic issue. Do you remember the $400 toilet seats that the Pentagon had to defend several years ago?
JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, HOST: I do.
CLIFT: This is the kind of thing that people understand, and when you look at the tax code, it is riddled with tax breaks for special interests.
JAMES PETHOKOUKIS, REUTERS: Eleanor, do you remember the yacht tax that killed the yacht industry? Put thousands out of work? It's the exact same thing.
CLIFT: The corporate jet…
MCLAUGHLIN: Let Pat in.
PAT BUCHANAN: This is demagoguery. Hold it Eleanor, hold it!
CLIFT: You’re telling me to, quit telling me to hold it. I stopped talking several minutes ago.
MCLAUGHLIN: Quiet.
Now that's must-see TV!
I'm thinking of putting in a loop and watching it over and over and over...

Yeah, Eleanot, that's us! We can't tell the difference between the government overspending on a crapper cover and the purchases of individuals and corporations.
Eleanor, you have no right to pontificate on our stupidity simply because a rag-mag that sold for $1 pays your salary.

She stopped talking and kept rambling, and had to be told to be quiet. What else are you gonna do, let her run out air time so that the others can't get a word in after she stopped talking several minutes ago?

$400 toilets?
Submitted by Fredy on Sun, 07/03/2011 - 8:19pm.
I wonder if they realize the local big box store sells toilets for $400? Sorry, but this anecedote of government spending excess is way out of date!
The budget is short by trillions and some of these commenters just do not understand the scope of the problem.
You missed the point
Submitted by falcon on Mon, 07/04/2011 - 10:26am.
The comment was in regards to toilet seats that the Pentagon was paying upwards of $400 for (that were being installed on military airlift aircraft and tankers - charges by the contractor). This was NOT in regards to toilets that we buy on a daily basis for our homes (I paid $500 for a toilet seven years ago). And it wasn't an "anecdote," it was proven fact in Congressional testimony.
Don't equate Government overspending with the fact that the stuff we buy for ourselves is expensive. We understand the scope of the problem perfectly well - in fact, there are plenty of other anecdotes of Government overspending; just look up F-35 and you'll see a big one. (And that's just one example.)
Perhaps you should do a little more study on the "scope of the problem."

the taxpayers, until you can prove that the Government never changed the requirements, schedule, or number of units for things like the F-35, or can show that all the technology requested was off-the-shelf and readily available/known about/fully understood when the contract was awarded. The end result -- expensive -- doesn't always equate to the verbalized cause -- corruption by the Contractor.

Several minutes, Eleanor?
She started to say something about corporate jets, McLaughlin says, "Let Pat in" (three sylables), followed by, "This is demagoguery. Hold it, Eleanor, hold it!" (14 sylables.)
Just how slowly were McLaughlin and Buchanan speaking that it took them "several minutes" to get 17 sylables out?

Talking 'heads' on McLaughlin Group

It’s time to put that “toilet seat” issue down for good.
To begin, it was no toilet seat but a molded fiberglass shroud used to cover the entire unit.
The shrouds were replacements for P-3C Orion antisubmarine aircraft that had been flown for 25 years. The shrouds had been discontinued and required the manufacturer to completely redesign, retool, and manufacture them from scratch - requiring the creation of molds that had not been used in decades.
The initial cost for the 54 shrouds, including the cost of the equipment to manufacture them, was $34,560.
However, after complaints of overcharging by the Pentagon, the cost was REDUCED by $29,165 and refunded leaving a per unit cost of around $100.
Of course FACTS never stand in the way of liberals who, even when presented with them over and over, simply repeat their bogus accusations again and again.
It’s all they have.

Thanks for re-exposing those facts to light. I had forgotten that they weren't really "seats." I do recall some Congressional testimony about that issue, though, so it's not really an "anecdote," but the Left wants to turn it into the poster child for defense spending (and its rationale for cutting same).

How well did that go. Closed businesses and laid off employees. That is how raising/and or high taxation (and Obama care) really work. Couple taxes with bureaucratic over regulation of any and all industry and you get recession and stagnation. Just use Greece as an example of Socialism gone wild (and God forbid that you try to take any of those percs away). Pols are afraid of such things as a flat tax or any innovative (read fair) tax system as they would lose the power to use taxes as weapons (as the dems do) or as instruments of policy (as all pols do).

Submitted by Nightfly on Mon, 07/04/2011 - 10:39am.
Obama is not talking about eliminating elusive tax loopholes used by ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations. He really means raising taxes on couples making over $250,000 annually and individuals that make over $200,000 annually. Those are the very people who own the small businesses in this country and are responsible for creating most of the jobs. Obama doesn't want to drive our economy into the ditch, he wants to drive it off a cliff.

Liberals can't learn anything when the facts/outcome flies in the face of what they "believe" to be true.
