Is Obama About to Have a Mondale Moment?
When Democrat presidential candidate Walter Mondale announced in his October 1984 debate with former President Reagan that he would raise taxes if elected, his campaign was over, and he ended up losing one of the biggest election routs in American history.
As Barack Obama prepares to offer the nation his deficit reduction plan Wednesday, it is widely believed he is going to recommend tax hikes on at least the upper wage earners in this nation.
If this is true, is he repeating Mondale's mistake less than nineteen months before Election Day? Are Americans hungrier for tax increases now than they were 27 years ago?

Consider that the economy was absolutely exploding when Reagan and Mondale faced off that October evening. Having grown by 4.5 percent in 1983, the Gross Domestic Product rose by a staggering 8 percent in the first quarter of 1984 and 7.1 percent in the second quarter.
The jobs market was exploding. Having peaked at 10.8 percent in December 1982, the unemployment rate plummeted to 7.3 percent by the time Reagan and Mondale exchanged their versions of the future on national television. The economy had added more than four million jobs since Inauguration Day.
Inflation was also plummeting. When Reagan took office in January 1981, the Consumer Price Index had just risen by 11.8 percent. When he and Mondale debated, inflation was down to only 4.3 percent.
Oil and gas prices were also on the decline with crude going from $37.42 when Reagan took office to under $29 when he and Mondale met. From what I can tell, gas prices had dropped from about $1.50 a gallon to $1.20.
Add to this a huge bull market in stocks as well as real estate, and the economy in October 1984 when Mondale said he wanted to raise taxes was absolutely booming.
Compare that to today. Despite some encouraging signs, one could hardly call what's happening now a boom.
2.8 million more people are out of work than when Obama took office, with unemployment still quite high at 8.8 percent. The housing market is tremendously depressed with some fearing another big decline is on the way.
Inflation is also beginning to be a problem. Though still at only 2.1 percent, it has risen from basically zero when Obama was inaugurated, and looks to go much higher in the coming months and years.
Oil was going for about $40 a barrel in January 2009 versus $106 today causing gas prices to double since Obama took office with fears they're going substantially higher.
Add it all up, and America felt far better about its personal finances in 1984 than it does today, yet it still had no appetite to give government more of its hard-earned money.
With the doldrums folks are in now, and fears they may never be able to retire, are they going to be more interested in giving to Washington's bottomless pit?
To be sure, Obama, his Party, and his devoted media will frame "revenue increases" as tax hikes on the rich that won't impact the average citizen.
But with trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, will John and Jane Q. Public believe that the buck-chasing will stop there and the Democrats won't be soon knocking on their door once the tax increases start?
If not, history could be repeating itself Wednesday, and the 2012 presidential election could be over before most of the candidates have even tossed their names into the ring.

Not a Mondale Moment

Obama is now indwelt by, and enveloped with, a Spirit of Corruption.
Worse than a compulsive liar, this man, whose "little boy smile" enchants the nether regions of talking heads, lies for the occasion.
Obama has an uncanny cognizance of the fecklessness of his followers, and knows their steadfast adherence to moral corruption precludes any consideration of voting against him.
Bambi a better liar than Mondull.
Submitted by Newsbubba on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 10:57am.
I'll bet that Bambi gets through his speech today and contradicts everything he says in the first part of the speech, before the end of the speech!
We are dealing with a sociopathic, professional, lying con artist. As much as I despise him, I have to give him his due. He is without a doubt the most accomplished liar that I have ever seen in my lifetime. This boy could sell a load of horse shiite to a horse farm, and get top dollar! He's really, really good.
George Soros chose well when he picked someone who had spent his entire life living, and selling, a lie! I mean, who else on the planet could have gone through life and no one noticed until he is president of the US? I mean most men have pissed off enough women in their early lives so that any half decent reporter could find ONE who says she remembers you. Not Barry.
The man is truly an enigma by any definition of the word you wish to choose. (Are we allowed to call him that?)
How can you tell he's lying Bubba?

His lips are moving.
Don't you just love it....he proposed his budget two months ago, totally ignoring HIS OWN debt commission's recommendations...but now that Ryan's budget is front and center, Der Chairman wants a mulligan.
It kind of reminds me of Shanklin's parody of Obama during the election with the serving soldier bracelet (he couldn't recall the name of the soldier inscribed on the bracelet he was wearing at the time, can you say vacuous?).... but, but, but I have a bracelet, toooooo!
Obama is a spoiled brat, and the media enables him just like an over-indulgent parent. With predictable results, I might add.

Worse than that.

I'm convinced that Bambi is sooooooo good at lying that he doesn't even have to SPEAK to tell a lie! He purely LIVES a lie.
Speaking of Shanklin, check out his latest, "Born In The USA" starring Barry's voice. Truly funny.
Trump should use it at his pep rallies.
Obama has to be the most reactive...

president we have ever had. He is not proactive. He never gets out in front on any issue...He never leads... He waits on the sidelines to see which way the wind is blowing, and only if he feels it is not politically dangerous or is advantageous to him in some way, does he then dip his toe into the water. So much has been said of Obama's lack of leadership, and that is certainly true. But Obama suffers from more than a lack of leadership...He is just plain gutless and is a political coward. He avoids, seemingly at all costs, making the right, but often tough choices. As you rightly said, he is a spoiled, petulant brat, who the media is only too happy to provide cover for, corrupt fools that they are.

You should send that, verbatim, to the RNC.
A perfect campaign theme.
Oh yes, be sure to send them an invoice for $450,000 for your consulting services.

Hmmm...I just might do that, Blonde...
Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:40pm.
LOL!
And as for that consulting fee, I'll happily waive that for a promise from RNC chairman Reince Priebus and Co. that they won't help package and promote another RINO for the nomination in '12, ala John McCain...That's more than enough payment for me.

Inconsiderate
Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:46pm.
He's pretty damned inconsiderate but that's been consistent too. He was supposed to give some lame debt speech at 12:35pm eastern time and he has yet to show up.(an hour late so far)
He's always late which shows a lot of inconsideration, but what do you expect from someone with NPD, probably thinks people will be glad to wait for him.
Ugh, the guy's a real appetite suppressant.

Actually, the speech was scheduled for 1:30pm EST...
Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:50pm.
But, "The One " is still late...Wait, here he is...
That said, Obama, like Clinton, is usually late for many of his "events".

Yeah, he showed up right after I hit "Save."
And right away he starts talking about stuff that doesn't exist!!! Not that it surprises me, but the audacity (his fave word) that he has in telling all this crap to the students! It's like taking a match to a newspaper and after it's burned, he'll say "it's still readable." I even caught his comment about "skipping classes" to come to his thing.
All these glowing things he talks about, and we're living in the EXACT OPPOSITE.
What a snakeoil manchild!! I bet Rush is gonna have a field day with this one.

More of the same from "The One"...

Soak the rich and businesses, and scare the daylights out of the old folks, the poor, and college students by telling them that those mean old Repubs want to take away their healthcare, education funding and college loans and grants.
As far as having a room full of students as Obama's captive audience, that was clearly by design...This is the age group that loves him and that he still polls well with...Naive kids...Most of them don't have the first clue that they are being lied to and led down the garden path by Obama and the Dems.

Obama has the media more on his side
Submitted by c5then on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 11:31am.
While the media back in 1984 was biased toward the liberal side and the democrats they were more stealthy about it. Today they are blatantly activist in their cheerleading and campaign advising for democrats in general and Obama specifically.
Obama could come up with all kinds of socialist/communist plans and the media would bend over backwards to describe why they were good ideas and why any opposition was "extreme" and unpatriotic. Not to mention racist.
The other difference is that I do not see a "Reagan" out there. I do believe that any serious and mature and logical candidate that the GOP nominates will probably beat Obama, However I see some "Bob Doles" and some "Ross Perot's" out there right now.
Madison and Jefferson and Franklin built a Republic - Roberts killed it!
Not sure about that
Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 11:38am.
I'm not sure about the Mondale moment, because as stated above, the Chairman is an accomplished liar. I remember when Mondull was telling people "I will take care of you" and he said it in such a creepy scary way, there was no way to take it but honest on his part and then vote for Reagan in a landslide to stay away from that creepy guy.
On the other hand, people have been and are still being in some cases snookered by this flimflam manchild.(It's an insult to real men to call him a man) For that to happen, I blame the Americans for that. They are the ones that put him there.
And he alone created the oil situation we are in today with the illegal moratorium. He controls the EPA which is also causing problems for us today. And on and on.
So we shall see what happens next.

Some finally woke up to what is happening, and far fewer still never went to sleep in the first place, and saw this lunacy coming well before the election even happened.
Even so, many Americans still seem to be enthralled by this fraud of a POTUS, and will probably not "get it" until they are standing in the depths of the abyss, looking up and wondering what the hell happened.
I have never been more depressed over the future of our America as I have been since Friday.
I'm also afraid Ryan's budget plan is too little, too late, as we don't have ten years to get this spending insanity under control.
Nowhere near.

We got months. Maybe a year tops. That's it. Saw a headline about how some world leaders are getting closer to taking the dollar out of the equation before too long.
Rise of New World Power (without USA)
That's not a little disturbing.
As for sleeping, seems ol Joe fell asleep during this thing. Someone pointed it out elsewhere, and the links still on Drudge.
Guess running a dictatorship is real tiring for the Chairman and his boy Joe.

Like the one where he walks across the White House lawn and boards Marine One - for the last time.
This is not the same America that existed 27 years ago.
Over that time, Marxism has ingrained itself ever deeper into the American psyche.
As such, I expect Obama's tax hikes will be well received by a large percentage of the government-educated and economically illiterate sheepulation.
And don't forget, nearly 50% of us have been moved off the federal tax rolls, and more people than ever before are getting a check in some form or other from the rest of us via the federal government.

and Newsbubba is correct regarding Obama being exceptionally oily as a liar.
Another problem, as jon_t, points out, is that the fools who voted for this pos, for whatever reason, are for the most part, still lurking around out there; and neither a feeling of patriotism for the Democratic Party, nor love of country, spurs them to the voting booth; but rather a worship, again, for whatever reason, of Obama.
White guilt?
Black racism against whites?
Hatred of or disgust with Bush 43 and the Republicans?
Combination of all of the above?
Hard to say, but even those I disagree with politically have made some valid points that may well justify their reasoning.
At least to themselves. :o)

near 50% of the population doesn't pay taxes, it's easy for the Dems to convince them that government largesse comes at no cost.
That's the danger in our income tax code, and the primary reason it should be scrapped in favor of a consumption-based flat tax. If everybody had to pay 17% tax on every purchase they made, you'd hear a huge outcry from ALL the people the moment Congress proposed an increase to 18%.
Do that one thing, and restrict the federal budget to the PREVIOUS YEAR'S TOTAL REVENUE (instead of the projected baseline budgeting hocus-pocus they do now), and the federal budget would be self-regulating, stable, and nonpolitical.
