Chris Matthews Show Celebrates Obama Having More Facebook Friends Than Gingrich and Romney

By Noel Sheppard | March 06, 2011 | 15:42

President Obama apparently has 18.5 million Facebook friends which not surprisingly is far more than former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

When the Huffington Post's Howard Fineman told his liberal colleagues on the syndicated "Chris Matthews Show" what a potential advantage this gives the current White House resident, there was much rejoicing (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Welcome back. Howard, tell me something I don't know.

HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST: Well, the organizational battle is starting not just in the states but in cyberspace. On Facebook, Newt Gingrich has 100,000 Facebook fans. Mitt Romney has 800,000, but most significantly, Barack Obama has 18.5 million and that's an organizational tool that his people are right now figuring out how to update for the 2012 campaign. It’s potentially dynamite.

MATTHEWS: Wow.

NORAH O’DONNELL, NBC: How many friends do you have?

FINEMAN: Not many. Zero.

Notice the huge smile on Katty Kay's face as well as Matthews exclaiming, "Wow."

Journalism at its finest, wouldn't you agree?

*****Update: Facebooker Bill Riley wisely points out that 18.5 million friends is not necessarily all that extraordinary for the most powerful person in the world...

I guess if the vote is held only on Facebook, Barry's in good standing.

Otherwise, it means nothing.

They say there is nothing in it so far.  But plenty of people have "Frended" it for some reason.

When will Matthews finally be finished with either his unending adolescence or his early senility? Geez.

Pathetic comparison

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 03/06/2011 - 4:06pm.

What a pathetic comparison, it's got no basis of reality in any way shape or form.  Might as well be that South Park episode that touched on this facebook nonsense recently.

I call it nonsense because of how some people are using it as a guide in some things socially related as if it were some sort of standard.  I do know people who use it and that's fine, more power to them/  I don't use it nor do I want to use it.  It's an option on my smartphone and one I keep turned off.  It's also on some apps that I use and I keep those settings off while using the apps.

But I don't use it like Chrissy does as some sort of status thing.  It's not realistic at all.

Yeah, and Charlie Sheen is a soulless, porn loving, cocaine addict with about as much common sense as an onion, and he got a million Twitter followers in one day.  So exactly what does it mean to have a lot of "friends" or followers on the internet, especially when most of them will never find their way to a voting booth (thank God)?

And Lady Gaga has 30 million fans. Doesn't make her a better singer. I laugh at these comparisons. By that comparison specifically, Obama should have won the last presidential election 95% to 5%.

If you added up that whole panel's IQ you would get somewhere between 21-29. Depending if they took their lib-meds or not.
