Maher Says Bush 'Wasn't Aware of S--t' After Bashing O'Reilly for Disrespecting Obama

By Noel Sheppard | February 12, 2011 | 01:40

HBO's Bill Maher on Friday perfectly demonstrated liberal hypocrisy concerning how Democrat and Republican presidents should be treated by the media.

In a lengthy segment on HBO's "Real Time" about how "disrespectful" Bill O'Reilly was during his Super Bowl interview with Barack Obama, Maher castigated the Fox News host for his "unpatriotic" behavior moments before debasing former President George W. Bush for not being "aware of s--t" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER, HOST: Let me ask about the President and Bill O’Reilly, because of all the things that got to me this week, that really bothered me. If you saw the interview he did at the Super Bowl, I thought it was very disrespectful, literally unpatriotic. Oh. Show our, show our little thing. We built this, we might as well show it every week. There you go. Reclaiming patriotism. Arianna was talking about it. You know, we talk about getting guns off, you know, everybody having a gun would be patriotic. Giving people healthcare. This is patriotic. And so would this be: not belittling your President. I mean, some of things he said to them…

CORNEL WEST: I agree.

HOOMAN MAJD: It was worse than that. It was actually bigoted.

MAHER: Yes.

MAJD: When he asked if he knows football. I mean…

MAHER: Right.

MAJD: …if I was the president, I'd say, “Get the f--k out of my house.

MAHER: Right.

MAJD: Do I know football?

MAHER: Right. You're a basketball guy, wink, wink.

MAJD: Inner city basketball guy.

MAHER: Yeah, we know what that means.

MAJD: Muslims don’t play football.

MAHER: Right. And you also throw dice behind the Rose Garden, don't you?

MAJD: And you smoke.

WEST: You know what’s interesting about that? I was taken by Obama being so steady because he's such a nice brother.

MAHER: Yes.

MAJD: He showed anger there, though. If you look at…

WEST: But he was containing it, but the interesting thing for me is if that had been a left-wing person raising questions, he probably would have expressed his anger. Obama really does get upset about progressives. That's why Rahm talks about f-ing – I could say it but my Mother’s watching – f-ing progressives and f-ing retards. They're talking about people like ourselves. I mean, ourselves in terms of progressives.

MAHER: Yeah, but I cannot imagine George Bush giving a pre-Super Bowl interview to Keith Olbermann. Which would be, can you imagine if Keith Olbermann treated him like that? Interrupted him over and over, leaned over like it was a bar. I thought he was going to ask him to get some motherf—king iced tea. It was disrespectful, and listen to this. Here’s what a dick O’Reilly is. He says… [Audience laughter] He said to Obama at one point, “Mubarak knows a lot of bad things about the U.S. I’m sure you’re aware of that.”

"Yeah, I get to see the CIA briefing at 7:30 every morning, and I get the director of Homeland Security in my office every, I think I am aware of that, Bill. Do you get that briefing? Oh, you don’t? I get that briefing. Yes, I am aware of that."

You know who wasn’t aware of s—t? Bush.

If being patriotic means "not belittling your President," exactly what was that?

O'Reilly in Maher's view was "disrespectful" to Obama, but it was completely acceptable for the "Real Time" host to say Bush "wasn't aware of s--t." And nobody on Maher's production crew caught the glaring hypocrisy.

Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

In reality, this whole outrage of Maher's concerning O'Reilly's treatment of Obama is the height of hypocrisy.

Other than Keith Olbermann, likely no mainstream media member has shown more disrespect for George W. Bush than the "Real Time" host. For him to criticize anyone's treatment of an American President is the height of gall.

On Friday evening, Maher perfectly demonstrated that only Democrat presidents are deserving of respect.

A Republican?

He isn't "aware of s--t!"

Thanks for clearing that up, Bill

Are you guys dumb or just stupid?...

Submitted by jcdugger on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 4:18pm.

What apparently the author of this article - or all the Einstein's in the comments section - doesn't understand is this: O'Reilly was belittling the President DIRECTLY TO HIS FACE.  Maher was belittling a President that wasn't within 500 miles of him!

Maher belittles Obama all the time (or do you not know that, conservatives?) - And to those who hate Maher...he's an ok guy when he's belittling Obama, right???  Talk about hypocritical.

Maher's contention was that you don't talk to a President like that TO HIS FACE.  If you have the privilege of interviewing a standing President, you put your feelings of him aside and you interview him professionally.  You don't interrupt him, nor lean over and belittle him like O'Reilly did.  YES, treating a President like that is entirely 100% unpatriotic.

If O'Reilly dumped about Obama after the interview, fine, there's nothing unpatriotic about that.  That is part of our society (the fact you can speak your mind).  But putting down and belittling a standing President to his face, I'm sorry, that's unpatriotic.  And to say otherwise is just uneducated and sad.

It's funny, once I point out that O'Reilly was actually in front of Obama, while Maher wasn't anywhere near GW - the only replies are juvenile things like "You used your comment line too much" and "Wahhh".  Guess that means I won the argument...nothing good to come back with??  Didn't think you would.

Bill Maher - missed the rather progressive President Bush

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 3:11am.

BILL MAHER, HOST: Giving people healthcare. This is patriotic

Gee, for a minute there Bill, I thought you were speaking of President Bush - you know the President that gave seniors on Medicare a prescription drug benefit for the first time in US history.

Come to think of it, President Bush set up a very progressive premium system for Medicare Part B, as well.  Now it is income tested, and the wealthier income earners pay many times more than those with minimal incomes.

He was also trying to set up changes in Social Security so that it might be there for future generations.

And, come to think of it, Bill Maher, did you notice what's going on in the Egypt today? You think that President Bush lit a fire?

I didn't watch the O'Reilly interview.  It was enough to semi-hear his self-promotion bragging about what he did with the body language segment promotions on FOX.

O'Reilly lost me a while ago.  He's pedantic, arrogant, aggressive to the point no one can finish a sentence, and he seems to think he's the only person in the room.

Other than that, he's in show business and has the top Cable News show on TV.

Vulgarity and Hate to Argue a Point Is Deplorable

Submitted by Boil It Down on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 7:06am.

Let me get this straight. Using vulgarities and vitriol to demonstrate your own lack of patriotism and disrespect for a President is the best way to persuade your audience that Bill O'Reilly "was very disrespectful" and "literally unpatriotic " to 'your' President. Does that about sum up your highly regarded (in your own mind) "intellectual wisdom" about how interviewers should conduct themselves? Should O'Reilly have shrunk back and groveled a bit? Was O'Reilly there just as a prop to allow Obama to make another of his over exposed speeches and run out the clock on a short interview? Would that inform the public better?

Despite the fact that O'Reilly's interview was seen as adequate or too lenient by most of the country, Maher felt the need to vomit out some more of his famous bile. O'Reilly doesn't need to be defended to "Mr. I hate America" Maher. However, Bill Maher himself is indefensible to any decent person. To display himself the fool doesn't make him funny or relevant.

HBO's management or any TV executive needs to get down on their knees and ask the forgiveness of the public and make penance for putting someone even remotely like Maher on the air. This "shock jock" mentality to make ratings is strictly self serving and an aberration to the public. They need to think about the degradation this brings upon the country and have some concern for their viewers.

By the way, having Hooman Majd and Cornel West on your panel will always detract from your credibility.

Yes, let's get this straight...

Submitted by jcdugger on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 4:46pm.

Q: Using vulgarities and vitriol to demonstrate your own lack of patriotism and disrespect for a President is the best way to persuade your audience that Bill O'Reilly "was very disrespectful" and "literally unpatriotic " to 'your' President. Does that about sum up your highly regarded (in your own mind) "intellectual wisdom" about how interviewers should conduct themselves?

A: Um...what?!

Q: Should O'Reilly have shrunk back and groveled a bit?

A: No, what you do is treat the man respectfully, as he is the President (like it or not!).  You don't lean over him.  You don't interrupt him.  You don't ask him if he knows football for Pete's sake!  O'Reilly is loosely labeled as a journalist.  He's talking to the POTUS.  Know your place.

Q: Was O'Reilly there just as a prop to allow Obama to make another of his over exposed speeches and run out the clock on a short interview?

A: Yep, that's what it was alright!  Dork.  This wasn't a Federal Grand Jury that Obama was getting interviewed by.  It was for the yearly "Interview-with-the-President-before-the-Super-Bowl" special that every President accepts.  It is done, normally respectfully, by a media member in the opposing party.  It's a light-hearted interview, nothing more.  O'Reilly was WAY out of line.       Q: Would that inform the public better?   A: This wasn't a State of the Union.  It's just a light interview, that's all.  Do you want every interview to be The Gettysburgh Address?

You: Despite the fact that O'Reilly's interview was seen as adequate or too lenient by most of the country

A: Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!  With the one notable exception of Fox News (and I suppose maybe Rush Limbaugh), nobody, anywhere, has referred to O'Reilly's disrespectful questioning as "too lenient" or "adequate"!!!  I'd ask where you get this stuff from, but I think I know.

Oh, but that's ok, because he's, you know, a comedian!

BTW, Bill, patriotism is love of country, has nothing to do with respect for a man who happens to be president.

Apparently disagreeing with a Republican president is patriotic;

So Says Hillary

but merely debating with Obama the Magnificent is unpatriotic.

And, of course, not being happy to just leave it at "unpatriotic" Maher has to throw in the accusation that BOR's behavior was racist too:

On more than one occasion, Obama's cabinet picks who are in charge of our national intelligence and security have been caught flat-footed. I'm talking like deer-in-the-headlights.

Remember this?

And don't even get me started about Janet "Reno II" Incompetano.

And what about Obama finding out about Mubarak's ouster from watching it on TV?

Either these three are the most incompetent goobers ever put in charge of anything, or our once excellent intelligence gathering capabilities have gone to Hell in a handbasket.

I suspect it is a lot of both.

Seeing you don't have the common sense to figure it out youself, let me slowly explain it to you.

You see, O'Reilly asked Obama whether or not he knew football.  The panel was saying, sarcastically about the right-wingers, as if they were right-wingers: "You're black, so you might know basketball...but you're Muslim and Muslims don't play football, so you surely can't know football".

They were making fun of right-wingers, like you, who think Obama is a Muslim.  Not being bright, I see how you didn't understand that.  A couple more years in the 3rd grade might help you out a bit!

Under Bush...The elimination of Habeus Corpus!  "Mission Accomplished!", Torture, Took a Surplus and made it a defecit!  You want me to continue even further?

Compared to Bush, Obama appears saintly and God-like!

So what? You would rather the terrorists be turned out onto US soil to await trial? Bush was not the first to do this.

  • Both suspensions of habeas corpus applied only to persons held in military prisons and tried before military courts. The habeas corpus rights of persons tried in civilian courts were not affected.
  • And up to this moment, Obama has not over turned this little item. He is still using it to keep terrorists locked up.

JCdigger? Who, in their right mind

Submitted by bassndude on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 5:09pm.

Who, in their right mind would even want to be near HBO, let alone have to be on every week or so? The guy would not make a pimple on a funny man's a$$.

I have seen his show and all that talk about how smart he is, is a bunch of nonsence. Then again, to the people who are low brow enough to watch his show, would think he is the second coming of Einstine.

Face it, if he was as smart as you seem to think, he would be able to make his point with out the use or profane language. He would also be able to be just a little bit funny. Only time he is funny is when he is in front of a bunch of idiots that pay to watch him.

So if your an idiot, I guess it would make sence to watch the moron. He would be funny and the idiots would think he is smart.

How literally laugh-on-the-floor-funny is it for someone to rip on your intelligence while spelling Einstein wrong at the same time?!?!?!? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!  I mean: HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

And who do you like to watch?  Let me guess...Glenn Beck by any chance???

Maher is the only reason I get HBO.  Just like Obama being President, your ass just burns knowing Maher is successful!  How do those two things make you feel?  Do you need to talk to a shrink?  Can your simple brain handle it?

See? Ya just cant fix stupid. Watch your key strokes folks...

JC in his response gave a perfect demonstration of what I was talking about.

Nope, I dont watch Beck. I sometimes listen to his radio show if I am in my office. Maher's success, or lack of, is of no concern to me. I just don't care. But then again, I don't care to watch little men make an ass of themselves. And if Maher is the only reason you get HBO, you must really lack for something to watch.

Try NICK. My granddaughters like it. Speaks well for those 7 year olds, and it will be right at your level.
