SNL Trashes Michele Bachmann, Imagines 'Second Attempt' at SOTU Speech
Predictably joining the media attacks on Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), NBC's "Saturday Night Live" began its most recent installment mocking her response to the President's State of the Union address last Tuesday.
Actress Kristen Wiig playing the Congresswoman explained that as a result of technical difficulties in her first attempt, CNN gave her a second try at it. What followed was gaffe after gaffe in another segment by SNL designed to totally trash a conservative woman (video follows with transcript and commentary):
ANNOUNCER: This is CNN. Tonight, a CNN special event. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s response to the President's State of the Union address - the second attempt.
[Laughter]
[Cheers and applause]
KRISTEN WIIG AS REP. MICHELE BACHMANN, (R-MINN.): Good evening. I'm Congresswoman Michele Bachmann from Minnesota’s sixth district. Four nights ago on behalf of the Republican Party and the Tea Party, I delivered a response to President Obama’s State of the Union address. Unfortunately, that response was marred by some technical difficulties, and it seems that its core message was not properly conveyed. Accordingly I have asked for this time tonight in order to try again. Because, you see, the issues are simply too important and the stakes for our nation too high to do otherwise. So here goes.

Two years ago when Barack Obama became president, our nation's unemployment rate was already 7.8%, and our national debt an astonishing $10.6 trillion. The economy was headed for disaster as you can see from this chart.

Not a pretty picture, is it? Yet, instead of addressing our economic problems, this president's policies have made them worse, as this next chart clearly shows.

That's right. Under our current president we've gone from this [first unreadable chart] to this [second unreadable chart].
[Laughter]
But it doesn't have to be this way. By simply reducing spending and returning to the core governing principles of our Founding Fathers, we can have an economy that looks like this.

But let's be honest, before any of this can happen, we must first address the massive growth in entitlements, especially Social Security. I'm going to show you another chart of the projected growth of revenues into the Social Security trust fund.

It’s a little hard to see because I drew the line in white. Now, here is the same graph adding projected Social Security expenditures, also in white.

Okay. That's a little better I think. Maybe not. The point is the current situation is unsustainable. Consider this chart which shows the amount of federal spending devoted just to interest on the national debt.

This is the one I dropped in the snow. That's a shame. That was important. But the point is the American people don't need graphs or charts to tell us what we already know. Our country is headed in the wrong direction and we all remember what this president promised us just one year ago at his first State of the Union.

Alright. Obviously, that's, that’s not President Obama. No, I know it's on this tape. I just don't know where. I don't have time to find it now. So let me just conclude by saying, I realize how much the American people are sacrificing during these troubled economic times. We Republicans get it. And we want you to know we're doing some belt-tightening of our own. For example, this presentation you just saw was done on a reduced budget. I'm not kidding. We didn't even hire a professional director. Seriously. Or a trained graphic designer. And here is something else, believe it or not, my makeup was done by a child.

In reality, if the folks at SNL had done their homework, they would have known that the real gaffe Tuesday night was made by CNN. As Breitbart reported hours before this was aired:
Our sources tell us that CNN had originally agreed to use the live feed set up by Tea Party Express, which had a teleprompter running on the lens in which Rep. Bachmann was delivering her speech. But, when Rep. Bachmann left the camera set-up and sat in the House chamber to hear Pres. Obama's speech, CNN set up a camera of their own, just off to the side of the main, tele-prompter/camera. Thus, when CNN provided their network feed it ended up skewed and off-kilter.
Here's what the real broadcast looked like Tuesday night:
As such, SNL could have just as easily made this sketch about the hapless professionalism of CNN for not using the Tea Party Express feed instead opting to use its own camera in a fashion that would guarantee the speaker wasn't looking into it.
The writers could have then had a field day mocking other such gaffes by the self-described most trusted name in news. That would have been a hoot, and quite contrary to how the rest of the media reported this incident.
In fact, if SNL really wanted to be original, it could have trashed all the media outlets and members that blamed this on Bachmann instead of CNN. Now that really would have been something to behold.
Alas, instead, NBC predictably piled on the conservative Congresswoman the media love to defame.
Just how predictable was it?
Well, a Twitter follower of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann sent a message to his hero Tuesday evening saying, "@KeithOlbermann Tonight's big winner from the Bachmann response debacle? - SNL's Kristen Wiig."
When people enamored with the former "Countdown" host can predict SNL's take on an event, and NBC unknowingly goes along with it, that has to be classified as too sophomoric for America's premier television comedy show.
Unfortunately, having impacted the 2008 elections with Tina Fey's impersonations of Sarah Palin while similarly trashing Delaware's Christine O'Donnell during the last election cycle, SNL made it quite clear with this opening segment that it's going to do its darnedist to trash conservatives for the next two years regardless of how predictable the sketch is.
The heads of Comcast must be so proud of their purchase.

A Very Funny Skit

There is a great difference in the tone of the "Joke" which this actually illustrates. The joke you point at quickly movies off of BO and becomes funny mostly as crude humor.
The humor of the mimicking the Conservative does not move off the subject but stays there mostly spitting the meanest stereotypes.
But a very funny bit from SNL to be sure. It's a shame that they ARE so very partisan.

It's very obvious to me. Hollywood sees how effectively they marginalized Palin, so they are doing the same with Bachmann.

SNL, although hardly worth my time anymore, is still billed as 'comedy'. Its their job to make fun of whatever or whomever they feel will appeal to their audience. Politicians have always been targets for comedy, and SNL used to do a fine job. Phil Hartman was great as Bill Clinton. Darrell Hammond had Al "Lockbox" Gore down pat. Dana Carvey did a spot-on Ross Perot. Chevy Chase as a bumbling Gerald Ford?
All Bachmann's gaffe did was give them more ammunition. Just laugh and admit it, or watch something else, like I do. But we shouldn't make such a fuss over it.

I do agree, however, that this really isn't worth getting all worked up about. SNL is SNL and they do what they do. No one should expect anything different.

I wouldn't put this on CNN. I'm sure if the TPX camera feed was working, that would have been used and the ridicule would have been avoided. Instead, we saw the pool camera feed on CNN and FoxNews.com and the ridicule began.

I for one am glad to have the Tea party joining the media, I understand the threat must be one the main stream left feels they must try to squash just as they do all voices that don't agree with them. For way too long I have complained about the media in general "examining" the Tea party with no source what so ever from the Tea party present, this media venture will give us a place to go to get the feedback and facts, responses instead of listening to leaf readers and wanna be Tea party experts. I'm going to blog them later. I made them in my 12" x 18" lasagna pan, prepared the old fashioned way, buttered and floured, and no stickage issues whatsoever. So this recipe yields 24 ~ 3" x 3" little (okay not so little) perfect pieces of heaven.
I'm a fair to midland cook, but I don't really bake. Having said that, Ina's recipes are always perfect, and this one didn't disappoint. The key, as her recipe indicates, is to "bang" them half way through baking, I took them out and slammed them three times pretty hard on the counter.

You and I are in synch today! I saw America's Test Kitchen / Cook's Country yesterday and they had a recipe for "Chewy Brownies" (replicated here), which is in ATK's new 2nd edition cookbook I purchased a couple month's ago.
The recipe's are remarkably similar. I was going to make them today but did not have unsweetened chocolate or instant expresso. :-( Off to the store tomorrow for the rest of the ingedients.
BTW, the episode discussed why these brownies are so good and chewy, First, there's a lot of chocolate in them! Second, the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats promotes the chewiness. Third, the egg yolks allowed for less oil to be used as emulsifier, which means less oils leaching from the brownie thereby decreasing greasy texture.
Science and food - how cool!
All this reminds me of the "For Thin People Only Brownies" a college roommate's mother would send him. They were the most fantastic brownie ever. I got the recipie but could never consistently duplicate her work. I even asked her if she left an ingredient out - LOL! - like I'd heard of che'f doing to keep their recipe's safe. I'll bet that brownie recipe has a lot in common with our "new" recipes.

I think less fat (from the butter) would be good, but the espresso (mine called for instant powdered, which I didn't have, so I just used ground espresso, it was delish) makes it work.
Food and science is very cool. I got Alton Brown's cookbook for Christmas, it is amazing.

Have you heard/seen Heston Blumenthal? Talk about science and food. The guy totally deconstructs food and comes up with the wildest, craziest, kookiest things. Some of it must be good. Some, well, I'm not so sure. ;-) But it is always fascinating and usually a gorgeous presentation.
Alton Brown is OK in my book. We like the same knives - Shun. The video in the link became part of a CD I burned for my mother as part of her gift of a Shun Classic 7".

I am not a doctor but I have noticed before, long before this that one of her eyes has a problem. She appears to have a slight Strabismus. This is a physical condition. How is making fun of a physical problem funny?
SNL does it here. Jon Stewart does it there. How is making fun of a handicap, even slight, now suddenly acceptable to these people? Yes, people have long been making fun of a handicap in general, such as Handi Man from In LIving Color. But to disparage the personal handicap of someone like this... I don't know, I quit watching SNL and Jon Stewart long ago. It just seems like they keep hitting new lows ever since.
SNL and Jon Stewart's biggest sins are they quit being funny.

... but the premise holds. Bachmann is being raked for something not of her doing or control. CNN decided to not use the Tea Party Express camera feed, so CNN is still part of the problem that resulted. It may be an innocent alteration by CNN, and we don't know why, but can you imagine CNN would choose an off-angle camera shot for Obama or another Democrat when a better shot is available? I can't.
I presume FOX decided to separate themselves from the Tea Party Express feed in a desire to appear above potential bias (what the Tea Party Express may place on the screen) and have control over video rights/usage.
Noel is correct. The wealth of comedy that could be mined from ribbing the Media for gaffes such as this is enormous. Focusing on Bachmann is more a one trick pony, but it does serve the political agenda of SNL.
