Ed Schultz: Republicans are 'Bastards Who Want to Destroy the American Dream'

By Noel Sheppard | January 05, 2011 | 21:23

MSNBC's Ed Schultz on Wednesday called Republicans bastards that want to destroy the American dream.

Apparently recognizing that he might have gone too far, the "Ed Show" host apologized moments later (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ED SCHULTZ: It’s all about taking down President Obama. They don’t want to create jobs. They’re not about that at all. And I’ll guarantee you, if you do see the numbers change, which I believe they will, you won’t hear Boehner or any of these new righties give one ounce of credit to the last Congress for fighting like hell for a jobs bill. This is an ideological war. I say it on camera tonight here on MSNBC. I will fight these bastards every night at 6 o’clock because I know what they’re up against. I know what they want to do. They want to take down American workers. They want to outsource jobs. They want to destroy the American dream. Concentrate the wealth to the top, and control minorities. That’s what they’re about.

About four minutes later, after interviewing Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wa.), Schultz apologized:

SCHULTZ: It is going to be a very passionate fight, and I just, no I haven’t had anybody in my earpiece since I started tonight, and management’s not saying I’m over the top. I just referred to the Republicans as a term I probably shouldn’t have used, but, I know what, they just infuriate me. I don’t think they’re honest brokers. I think they’re out to destroy unions. I think they’re out to destroy the working folk of America. I think they have nothing on the table for middle-class, the middle-class Americans out there who haven’t had the breaks that the top two percent has had. So, if I offended some of you by that term I used a few moments ago, I apologize. Maybe I’ve had too much TV.

Schultz was obviously referring to a December 20 piece by the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz:

“There are times I tell him he goes over the top and that TV is different than radio,” [MSNBC President Phil] Griffin acknowledges. “A couple of times he’s crossed the line. I said, ‘Ed, you ran down the field 100 yards and you spiked the ball. Don’t spike the ball!’”

Makes you wonder if someone did indeed mention something in Schultz's earpiece instructing him that he was over the top and needed to apologize.

After all, saying on national television that Republicans are bastards wanting to destroy the American dream seems a bit inflammatory even for the consistently inflammatory Schultz.

Hey.......at least he's a self-admitted socialist/progressive..........so I've got to believe that he's being true to himself. It's just that he's 180 degrees WRONG!!!!!

And.......oh.........last I checked, the Boy Blunder REGIME, coupled with the Ms. Botox/ Harry the Weasel Congress..............don't have a whole lot of bragging rights about doing anything positive about the 'job' situation, unless you want to count useless and meaningless government jobs, or those unemployment checks, which are so beneficial to the economy!!!

I wonder how they will top this clown??? He was VERY good at lying and covering for Boy Barry, without any regards to his own non-credibility..............and he was also quite smarmy and condascending and nebulous.........a very good lib mouthpiece!!!! Personally, I don't think I could find a 'position' for Gibbs, if someone asked me to give him a job............maybe cleaning maggot-infested garbage cans???

Dave, apparently your history books misled you.

We never had an American dream.

The Obama is in the process of creating it now.

When his health care bill passed, he declared it "another stone in the foundation of the American dream."

Don't ask me what the heck we've had for the 200+ years up to now.  But isn't it nice to know he's laying the foundation of  the American dream for us?

Of course, he means HIS American dream....

Funny you mention foundation, as I posted somewhere today (it might have been here at NB) that Obama was rapidly ripping the blocks out of this country's very foundation.

The scary part is that the should repubs in the House wuss out over the next two years even a little bit, Obama will still be in the basement ripping out the blocks the entire time. At some point, the whole structure is going to collapse.

I am praying that this congress has the stones to stop Obama cold, else the next congress will be seated amidst a smoking pile of rubble.

The American Dream is Evil

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 01/05/2011 - 11:49pm.

According to mamabear,

Part of our love of the American dream is the flip side which must believe that everyone who fails to achieve it did something to deserve their failure, which then absolves us from our responsibility to care about them.  Unless we feel like it.

Submitted by puredmashie on Wed, 01/05/2011 - 10:15pm.

if the american dream is about acquiring a job, then this is an inheritlantly republican and conservative core principle.  big government liberals don't realize that the government does not create jobs and wealth, but instead stands in their way.

obamacare, cap and trade, excessive regulation and others make it more epensive to do business and create jobs in this country and as a result, less business and less jobs will be created in this country will be created.  it's that simple.

i have no more affection for rich people than anyone who reads this, nor do i aspire to become rich.  but the fact remains that rich people do all of the hiring in this country, and if rich people are doing well they will hire more, create jobs, and create wealth in the process.  anyone who thinks otherwise is denying basic fundamental economics.

swing hard in case you hit it.

Special K wasn't nutty enough for Special Ed, so he skipped Special L and went straight to Special M (for Marxist) COMPLETELY missing the point of the last election.

Since the Republicans swept the US  House and gained in the US Senate, and captured control of many state houses where redistricting will hurt the Democrats even more, and gained power down to city and local elections, it seems THE AMERICAN PEOPLE believe the Republicans are more trusted to represent the AMERICAN DREAM than the Democrats.

Put a cork in it, Eddie-boy, until you are at a backyard vegetarian BBQ, surrounded by your drug and alcohol addled buddies -- after you finish off your 1st keg of Old Mil -- when you can scream and blather on to people who believe your drivel.

Submitted by tampamom25 on Wed, 01/05/2011 - 10:45pm.

Democrats have been the majority in Congress for about 46 of the last 60 years (that would be since 1950). The Senate has been controlled by the Democrats for about 40 of those 60 years. The Democrats have controlled at least one or the other of the 2 branches over 50 of the 60 years. The Democrats have controlled both Houses since 2007 - Exactly the period of the current economic collapse from an all time "high" in July 2007.  So tell me Ed, who exactly is the problem here????  You're a typical liberal, not at all interested in facts.  No coherent arguments or proof of any position you take, just loud name calling......  Oddly enough, you accuse Republicans of being exactly what Democrats are:o)

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Thu, 01/06/2011 - 1:49am.

If the American Dream is to sneak across the border illegally, pop-out multiples of babies, collect government benefits, insist that teachers learn Spanish so they can teach our kids, etc. then I guess I AM trying to destroy that dream.

If the American Dream is the government telling me everything to do, from what I can eat to forcing me to purchase health insurance then yea, I am against that dream.

The American Dream was never for the government to bailout those who couldn't pay their debts.      People like Schultz are in the wrong country.  He wants the old U.S.S.R.

I would have NO PROBLEM with any of the above Democratic Party antics if they weren't constantly raising my taxes to achieve it.

Submitted by DaMama on Thu, 01/06/2011 - 2:12am.

What a ridiculous thing to say.  Leftist liberals are the ones destroying this country.  Their knee-jerk reactions to everything from healthcare to climate change have made them look like ridiculous loons.  They don't think of things in the long run - they want immediate action NOW, regardless of what the facts or the truth is about a given situation.  They don't want to research, find out what is really true or needed - they just want something done NOW.

Conservatives want people to be responsible for themselves, not relient on government.  Conservatives want people to be able to get jobs and create jobs, not make more government jobs that do nothing but waste time and money.  Conservatives want a good strong foundation which includes morals and boundaries.

Schultz is such an ignorant fool. Why does he even have airtime?
