When will Newsbusters be

When will Newsbusters be putting back the asterisk (*) next to the new comments?  C'mon, you have (parentheses) surrounding the word new in the Forums, why can't you do something similar to the comments in the main section of NB?  It truly sucks having to scroll through every comment trying to find comments that you have not read already.

I am very disappointing. Considering this upgrade was solicited from the users, and very few of the concerns from said users have been addressed. This hurts to type : (

A world of difference

Submitted by NevadanConservative on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 12:43pm.

between deploying NK scrap and it actually being able to work.Much of this gear likely is Chicom or old Soviet vintage, and I can't picture either regime sending them first flight highest tech stuff.

The Kim dynasty has been relying on the old Khruschev saying "There is a quality in quantity." Throw enough low grade mil equipment at a objective and you'll get it done.

My guess, for its worth, is China will largely and wisely stay out, save to seal the NK/China border if this devolves back into a war. I am not sure of NK morale, and wonder if  Kim II or III or both dont end up Mussolini fashion.

NK has been bled dry to further their nuclear program, their military, and the Kim family cult of personality... all else has fallen by the wayside. South Korea is a Chinese trading partner and one with a fair amount of value. For all  the Communist chestbeating, the Chinese will not move against it directly.

Ronald Reagan has a response from the grave.

Submitted by The Vet on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 12:17pm.

My response was simple: Whenever our ships or planes were fired upon or otherwise deprived of rights granted sovereign countries in international waters, the navy was to respond in kind. "Any time we send an American anywhere in the world where he or she can be shot at, they have the right to shoot back," I said. One cabinet member asked: "What about pursuit?" He wanted to know the extent to which our planes should be permitted to pursue Libyan planes if they harassed our aircraft or ships in violation of international law.

The admiral stopped, cleared his throat, and looked over at me, waiting for an answer from me, and suddenly it was very quiet in the room. "All the way into the hangar," I said. A smile broke out on the admiral's face, and he said, "Yes, sir."

USAF B-2 can hit targets in North Korea.  So could F-22's flying from Osan AFB.

The Navy would use cruise missiles.

But I don't think Obama nor his predecessor would launch strikes on North Korea.

Last I heard, there were 11

Submitted by Bruzilla on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 10:42am.

Last I heard, there were 11 squadrons of F-22s out there, six of them in the Pacific theater.

The truth is, the F-22, while a nice plane, was designed by the USAF to meet, as usual, the USAF's needs only, which is why it was cancelled.  The F-35 meets the needs of the USAF and the USN, USMC, and a host of foreign services, which is why it is still being funded.

Headline: obama leaned forward in his seat at times

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 1:13pm.

North Korea Deploys Surface to Air Missiles in Yellow Sea.. as obama plays or watches Bball. Here's the latest Newsflash on obama, as reported by our breathless AP news gatherers: Obama took the whole family to Howard University, where they watched the Oregon State Beavers defeat the Howard Bison. Obama paid close attention to the game, leaning forward in his seat at times. He occasionally munched popcorn or sipped bottled water, and at one point 9-year-old Sasha reached over and kissed her father on the cheek opposite his stitched lip.

Is it newsworthy that obama leaned forward, or sipped bottled water? What kind of reporting is this, anyway? Is this a POTUS or something else? I simply can't believe this nonsense!

Actually, naming conventions

Submitted by Bruzilla on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 10:53am.

Actually, naming conventions for missiles and aircraft are very specific and mean different things.  Another poster mentioned the names given to Soviet aircraft, and they seem wierd, but they have a specific purpose.  For example, if a call goes out that a Bear is in the air, we immediately know that a propeller-driven bomber is in the air (a name starting with a B is a bomber, and a single-syllable word indicates propeller driven).  If a Blinder is reported, we immediately know it's a jet-powered bomber since Blinder starts with B and has two syllables.

The names may seem odd, but they are a way to quickly identify something just by the word used to name it.

Ear Leader doesn't have the testicles to do it (Hillary got 'em?), but each flight in the area needs to have either Standard or High speed Anti-Radiation Missiles attached, and when a targetting radar illuminates the plane, eliminate the radar.  Of course, that won't work on IR tracking missiles, but if NK fires a heat seeker at us, then give Pyonyang a can of sunshine so that their heat seekers will have a heat source worth going after.

When an American plane flying in international air space is rammed by a Chinese jet interceptor and as a consequence is forced to crash land on an island belonging to that latter nation, and the United States government sends a letter to Beijing saying it is sorry for entering China's territory without permission [i.e. forgetting to say "may we please crash on Hainan?"], that is what is known in the vernacular of diplomacy as "groveling".

Apples to oranges, Jer

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 12:31am.

Jer, you just love to compare apples to oranges don't you?  In the bumping (ramming incident you described, the only one who died was thew CHINESE pilot. All the Americans were fine.  We even got the plane back. And that Chinese pilot wasn't trying to crash into the plane, he was just trying to diver its course, which was heading into Chinese airspace. (It wasn't supposed to be in that area. It was miles "off course." WE were harassing the Chinese, on purpose because we didn't agree with the extended Chinese airspace claims, an increase that, coincidentally, extended their airspace out to the same nautical mile limits we claim around the US.)  Bush was RIGHT to apologize as WE were harassing THEM. If the situation was reversed and a Chinese military plane was heading into OUR airspace without permission, WE would do the exact same thing.  You should know that.

Now compare that to the NK SHELLING of civilians.  Civilians DIED in that attack.  It's a deliberate violation of the Cease Fire agreement, a deliberate act of WAR! Just how is THAT comparable to what happened with the Chinese?

But, hay comparing apples to oranges is fine with you, as long as you get to insult Bush while doing so, right?

So, Jer, you can take your "groveling" claims and shove them were the sun doesn't shine.  THIS veteran, for one, will not abide by your flagrant attempt to deflect Obama's deserved criticism.

Let's see, Cobra.  NK shells

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 1:29am.

Let's see, Cobra.  NK shells South Korea and civilians or soldiers are tragically killed and Obama is supposed to do what?...declare war on the North Koreans [or resume the hostilities halted nearly sixty years ago by the truce?]  Do you think perhaps the South Koreans should have a say in that potentiality?

The Chinese attacked/bumped/rammed one of our planes, and if not for heroic efforts by the pilot the entire crew would have perished.  Your speculation that the aircraft may have eventually entered Chinese airspace doesn't mean squat.  As it was, the Chinese ransacked the plane and very likely were able to obtain sensitive intelligence information.  Hell yes the "so sorry" letter was groveling, unmitigated by a couple of destroyers showing the flag, and far worse than anything Obama has done--and I won't abide your flagrant attempts to sugar-coat it for political reasons.  If that type of incident were foreseeable and would precipitate an apology from us, we shouln't have been stupid enough to be "harrassing" the Chinese in the first place.

Jer

Uncle Jer is right.

Submitted by The Vet on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 7:06pm.

We did not get shot at by North Korea. It is not up to us to escalate because of the 2 incidents. South Korea should. I say escalate because we are already at war with North Korea. Sometimes I feel lonely saying that.

If Uncle Jer feels the apology was so wrong. What would be the proper response? This is important.

You said Cobraman speculated and then you speculated the Chinese got sensitive equpiment. I have requested to be consulted on all military manners. There are procedures to destroy top secret equipment in the event of the plane falling into enemy hands. They are clearly marked. And there is an order, most sensitive first. And there a drills to destroy the equipment. As everything was top secret, we do not know what they were able to destroy in the limited time before landing. So it is pure speculation to suggest anything fell into communist hands that day. Let's speculate though a little. THEY TORE THE PLANE APART. Prolly wouldn't have done that if we had left all kinds of Super Top Secret stuff just laying around.

Uncle Jer exagerates a bit.

Submitted by The Vet on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 12:30am.

While I think that the talk of going to war with China is a bit exagerated here lately, an over exagerated response ain't gonna tone it down.

It wasn't exactly groveling either. We apologised with a non-apology apology. Sorry we offended you by farting in your presence, jerkwad.

Dear Mr Minister,

On behalf of the United States government, I now outline steps to resolve this issue.

Both President Bush and Secretary of State Powell have expressed their sincere regret over your missing pilot and aircraft.

Please convey to the Chinese people and to the family of pilot Wang Wei that we are very sorry for their loss.

Although the full picture of what transpired is still unclear, according to our information, our severely crippled aircraft made an emergency landing after following international emergency procedures.

We are very sorry the entering of China's airspace and the landing did not have verbal clearance, but very pleased the crew landed safely. We appreciate China's efforts to see to the well-being of our crew.

~

Yeah, so sorry your pinhead pilot misjudged the size of our flying brick and ended up killing himself and nearly downing us. Nothing like a dropping few dozen thousand feet inverted to make you think, wow, I think I just might make for a landing field in the country of the guys we were spying on. Yeah, whatever dude, we didn't get clearance before making that emergency landing with the half of our plane your pilot did not put in the Pacific Ocean. Jerks. Oh what, we have to apologize for calling you jerks in our apology now? Jerks. Yeah, didn't have verbal clearance for that emergency landing. The screams of MAYDAY MAYDAY WE ARE GOING IN THE DRINK!!!! FUDGE FACTOR ELEVEN!!! MAYDAY MAYDAY. Our pooter holes are clenched up tight here. Dear sweet lord in... Passports? Clearance for what? Look, clear the runway cuz there ain't no trying this twice. Jerks.

Forbidden Planet

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 1:25pm.

Anyone remember how he was in that timeless classic of science fiction, the Forbidden Planet?

That was one of his more serious roles and he did good with it.  It was also one of the inspirations to Gene Roddenberry in creating Star Trek.(there are some similarities)

I put it up there with the other classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still."  And not that remake dreck either.

Here is a TERRIFIC Christmas or Hanukkah gift for those

Submitted by Rush Fan on Mon, 11/29/2010 - 1:52am.

who are infatuated with President Obama, such as Chris Matthews. For ONLY $19.95 (plus $7.95 S&H) you can purchase for your leftist friends an American Chia Obama. It comes with a convenient trip tray, Chia handmade planter, Chia seed packet for 3 plantings, and of course, a planting and care instruction sheet.

CAUTION: Please be aware that you may be called a racist teabagger if you give this gift to your liberal friends. Don't take my word for it. TMZ.com, in a article heading titled Chia Obama -- Racist?,  is questioning if the Obama Chia pet is a racist product. Perhaps the maker of the Chia pets is a member of the Tea Party.

I seriously thought of that for my liberal....

....step-sis two years ago.  Of course, she was a huge Hillary fan, so I changed my mind.

How can Chia Obama possibly be racist?  He's green.  Well, his hair is....isn't Obama always touting those fabulous green energy jobs?
