75% Say Americans Getting Ruder, Is the Media Responsible?

A just-released Rasmussen survey found 75 percent of respondents believe Americans are getting ruder and more uncivilized.

If this is true, is it being caused by a downturn in the economy that clearly has made the public uneasy for obvious reasons, or are citizens just mimicking the caustic tone they've seen from political leaders the past couple of years as well as that exhibited by prominent media members?

After all, there's been a certain Jerry Springer-like offensiveness on display in the nation's capital since George W. Bush was first inaugurated, and the press have been quite in lockstep.

Given the Bush Derangement Syndrome the country witnessed -- especially after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans four years ago -- as well as the way a supposedly impartial media viciously attacked former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin from the moment she was announced as John McCain's running mate, and how average Americans protesting at Tea Parties and town hall meetings have been disgracefully disparaged in recent months, is it any wonder Rasmussen Reports found the following:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
Seventy-five percent (75%) of adults say Americans are becoming ruder and less civilized, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Just 10% say Americans are becoming kinder and gentler instead, while 15% are not sure.

Women under the age of 40 feel more strongly than any other age group that Americans are becoming ruder and less civilized. But overwhelmingly in every demographic category, Americans say the behavior of their fellow countrymen is coarsening.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of Americans say they have had to confront someone because of his or her rude behavior in public. But 45% say they’ve never had to do that.

By 11 points, men are more likely than women to have confronted a person who is being rude in public. Those ages 18 to 29 are far more likely to have done so than those who are older.

If it's acceptable for media members to disgustingly use -- ON AIR, no less!!! -- a sexual term to refer to folks who don't agree with the President's agenda, is any of this at all surprising?

The behavior of so-called journalists in the past few years has been increasingly ruder and less civilized.

Should we at all be shocked the population is mimicking it?

As far as I'm concerned #1

As far as I'm concerned #1 for "rude behavior in public" is constantly being on one's cell phone. And the media don't really have anything to do with that.

But I think that the general coarsening of behavior has caused the deterioration in our political discourse, not the other way around.

Politicians no longer see a need to elevate their behavior above that of  the rude louts in everyday life.

Spot on MB

The other ingredients to this toxic swill include being brainwashed to: tolerate the intolerable; accept pacification via "hate crimes"; eliminate consequences; embrace relativism, egalitarianism and deconstructionism as "normal"; and, celebrate the trashing of American values.

cell phones ettiquette

I am totally appalled by all behavior associated with cell phones! Which is one reason I refuse to have one. I'm sure many people would be surprised to know that one can actually live without one.

I see folks that act like the thing is growing out of their ear and chat constantly about NOTHING! My biggest pet peeve is when a real live person tries to speak to a mindless cell phone addict and gets the "hand" or a single shushing finger warning them not to interrupt the oh so meaningless chatter. Oh and of course any cell phone call must be taken regardless of where, when or from whom.

And don't get me started on texting. I've almost been killed several times by texting drivers.

And now with the iPhones and blackberrys, I see people playing on the internet during church. I mean, come on. It's like people cannot deal with reality so they immerse themselves into an electronic fantasyworld.

Also want to add that I actually bought the book pictured in this story to give to my nephews age 9 and 12. It is a cute book and they enjoyed reading it while learning about common sense manners.Highly recomended :)

I disagree. The worst is

I disagree. The worst is texting while driving. A coworker caused an accident today because of texting. A LOT of people text while driving and it's going to get worse. At least you can talk and look at the road at the same time.

I'm sure the MSM has something to do with it, but I just notice that people are more annoying in the past year or so. They annoy me with their neediness, to the point where I get rude. I try to keep to myself, but am always bothered.

I think you would probably

I think you would probably get very similar results if you conducted this poll at any time in the last 100 years; it speaks more to human nature than any current situation.  People find it easy to criticize and look down on those around them that they don't know.  Plus, people seem to naturally have a feeling that things are getting worse - it's easier to be pessimistic than optimistic.

Love the new GEICO commercial.

Now, that's manners!

A Democrat killed Harvey Milk, Nancy!

Man, they must spend a ton

Man, they must spend a ton of money on marketing!  They have the gecko, the caveman, the money with eyes, and now a pothole?  That's must be a record for the highest number of marketing campaigns run simultaneously.

It's easy to argue they have some of the most memorable commercials.

A Democrat killed Harvey Milk, Nancy!

And you know what's weird?

And you know what's weird?  I don't think I know anybody who actually has Geico car insurance.  Where are all of these Geico people?

I don't know anybody who uses GEICO either.

Ha, that's crazy.  Well they're getting their money somewhere.

My sister ad GEICO in California. She dropped it when she moved to here in New Mexico because they were way higher than even State Farm. I always thought that GEICO's commercials looked like they were written by the secretarial pool in some kind of office contest - come up with an idea, and they would tape and air it.

I think it is due to the

I think it is due to the right starting to get more verbal. We have been quiet for too long. Instead of keeping our mouths shut when we hear some drivel out of a liberal we are correcting it. The liberals see this as rude because we are speaking up. (How dare we). Get used to it.

Just look at a gathering of

Just look at a gathering of liberals and it's hard to deny that statistic.  Look at the way they treated Bush, Palin and even their pal McInsane...

This society has gotten ruder, coarser and baser as the prevalence of social liberalism has increased.

Hey ninerdog...

I really think you hit upon a very good point.  We have been silent for way too long and the libs and media do see our speaking out against their rather mind-numbing beliefs as rude.  But we must keep it up!

I think reality tv has

I think reality tv has played  a large part. Nothing but foul mouthed immature idiots who backstab and misbehave in an effort to get their 15 minutes and this is glorified. Combine that with uneducated parents who no longer want to be parents but rather would be their kids friends.

Well I'm just happy

I'm just happy that no one on this board mimics that rude behavior...

nwahs the liar: Fact is the first people to use the term were tea party attendees.

Alright factboy. Let's hear it. Source it. Where did tea party attendees refer to themselves as tea baggers before journalists and politicians first started calling them that.

It would be prior to Anderson Cooper and Davis Shuster on or about 11 April 2009.  Huffington post used it on 9 April.

If it is a fact, then nwahs can source it. Source it, Liar.

ME!

Me-me-me! Look at me! A generation has been raised on this "liberal" crapola. The media, the schools, and now many "parents" have drumed it into the heads of the young. Relativism rather than absolutism---"right" if you can get away with it--only "wrong" when you can't. Look no further than the lying, immature narcissist we have as POTUS.

For example-- at the food store yesterday, I witnessed a young couple bringing a filled basket to the "express" counter. While the people behind them protested, they laughed it off, piled it up, and went out to the parking lot to load their new Cadillac SUV. Spoiled rotten!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Thats satire right?

            YES!

YES! The fringe media is responsible. They are the poster child of rude.

Civility

The press is a willing accomplice in the class and racial hatred that is being stirred up by Liberals.   They pit the rich against the poor, blacks, hispanics, asians, and whites against each other (particularly against whites). and never miss a chance to call anyone a racist.  With a society being fed the lies that are prevalent today (it's never YOUR fault that bad things happenned to you, someone else did it to you, or You could better yourself if only THEY would let you, and other lies).  True conservatives believe in freedom.  The freedom to succeed, and change your lot in life through sweat and your own effort, the freedom to become anything you want, if you are willing to work for it, AND the freedom to fail if you are not willing to work towards your own betterment and expect everyone else to give success to you.  the difference is Liberals give you someone else to blame for your failure and laziness.  Conservatives give you the freedom to become whatever you are willing to work for, and many are willing to give you a hand up (a chance to prove yourself) as opposed to a hand out (which is temporary success at best, because eventually you WILL have to stand on your own).

Until we get rid of the entitlement attitude, where all of lifes needs and wants are expected as owed to certain individuals, and where their absense is seen as the result of others acting against you, we will have class and racial problems.

widespread ADD

not the medical definition of it.  Just complete lack of attention beyond anything that isn't "self" related.  Cell phones are my #1 peeve.  Cell phones in the checkout line, cells while driving, cells in a nice restaraunt.  Ever see two people out to dinner and they are both on their cell?  Unreal.

Personal pages like facebook etc only amplify more of "me" problem.  People don't need to know you just had a sandwich and are proceeding to the porch for a smoke and then perhaps...  you'll wash your car.  You're just not that important.  No one is that important because everyone is now that important.

Rudeness is prevalent everywhere.  Its in the print ads, its on the television commercials and of course, in the television programs. Parents are idiots.  Dads, especially are idiots.  There is an... heirarchy of stupidity in television land.  Usually the family dog is the smartest one in the family.

I don't think most people pay attention to politics but the pundits are hardly a place to start for a lesson on manners.  I don't watch sports so I can't speak to that.

I work with hundreds of people everyday and a good 40% of them are rude, or at the very least, apathetic.  The recession has definately soured people's moods.  But, I guess our small town is better than America as a whole?

It's the other 60% that give me hope.

Noel, America, if not the

Noel, America, if not the whole world has been getting ruder and less civilized for a long time.  It didn't start in 2000, it started a long time ago.  It accelerated in the 1960's.  Prior to that, people were fined for using profanity in public, and there weren't that many occurrences of public profanity.  Prior to the 1960's, if a man held a door for a woman, she told him "thank you", not "I can get my own door you chauvinist pig."  You're welcome. (Actually, I did have a woman berate me for holding a door for her.  She shut up and stalked off when I told her, "Ma'am, it was out of respect for your age, not your sex.")  Before the 1960's you didn't see a whole lot of litter on the sidewalk, people didn't spit on the sidewalk, gentlemen gave up their seats on busses and trains, people did not play radios or boomboxes at loud volumes on public transportation (of course, in the 1960's, they didn't have boomboxes).

No, Noel, it isn't the partisan newsmedia causing the lack of manners or civility.  I will posit they used to be a braking influence, but recently, but recently they have acted as an accelerant.

Chicken or the Egg

I don't think the media is responsible.  The media simply supplies what's in demand.  Someone makes something kind of rude and loose on morals, it makes a hundred million bucks and producers pile on.  If it didn't make money, they wouldn't keep doing it (for the most part).  The New York Times might be failing today but there was a time when their left leaning slant was working great.  MSNBC is what it is because of a perception that it was what the people wanted (this may still be true, but since they are in direct competition with so many other liberal news stations, they are simply spreading their audience too thin).

---

I think the root cause comes down to the rise of "permissiveness".  Somehow it became "enlightened" to be permissive to all sorts of previously abhorant behavior.  People always push the edges so when edge behavior becomes permissable, new edge behaviors will be that much further out.

I think we can also thank, basically, decades of peace, and a liberal culture where backing down in the face of confrontation is seen as the elite, educated path.  People feel safe to say what they want and do what they want.

If you ever read Robert E. Howard's Conan books, there was one Conan quote I always liked: "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know
they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general
thing." -The Tower of the Elephant

I agree.  Ironically, years of peace and backing down have taught us that we can be just as rude and uncouth as we please without facing any consequences, because when push comes to shove, we think one or both sides will back away from any conflict, then carry on with the rudeness somewhere else.

There have always been

There have always been rude, obnoxious people.  And there's a lot of polite, decent people.

Yeah, I'd say the media gives the perception that people suck in general.  When all you have are shows and movies that show the a$$ end of humanity, potty humor, and glorification of criminality then I guess it's easier to buy into all that being the norm.

I was glad to see that a Christian network recently aired The Cross and The Switchblade...hadn't seen it since it came out.  It was refreshing to see a film that offered hope for people and showed that even violent, drug using thugs from poor urban neighborhoods could actually turn their lives around...for real...that is, not because Nicky Cruz was entered into some kind of "government program" where people continue to play the system and never really change on the inside.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.
