During halftime of tonight's Sunday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, NBC aired part of an interview Bob Costas did with the legendary coach and now retired sportscaster John Madden.
As many probably missed it, and few have seen it in it's entirety, the complete interview is embedded below the fold:
Football won't be the same without him.
Thanks for the memories, and the lessons, John!

I happened to catch it.
September 20, 2009 - 21:56 ET by JimcinscBob Costas does a good interview, and John Madden is a great guy. I enjoyed the interview, and John showed why he will be greatly missed on NFL this year as a color announcer.
John Madden is one of the good guys.
I like the guy personally,
September 20, 2009 - 21:58 ET by BKeyserI like the guy personally, even though I think he relies too much on the teleprompter.
Oh wait...
Madden.
I mean telestrator.
Enjoy your retirement John- at least your not burnin' up the miles in that damn bus anymore, huh?
They had to raise the gondola
September 20, 2009 - 22:13 ET by richb313Yes, Madden was right. I remember that they had to raise the gondola after that Pro-Bowl Game.
John Madden
September 20, 2009 - 22:18 ET by blazermaniacJohn Madden is one of the great reasons why the NFL is great. And his final game as an analyst was the Steelers win over the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII (43). It was a great game for Madden to finish his career.
Are you sure that was Bob Costas?
September 20, 2009 - 23:06 ET by Barker'Cause it sure looked like Andrea Mitchell.
Costas and Olberfake...
September 21, 2009 - 01:49 ET by alaskaWe have to put up with these clowns when we want watch a football game? I wonder what kind of comments off mike that Olberfake made about George Bush throwing up the coin toss, "You sir need to get the hell out of this stadium". Costas reminds me of a male katie Couric, kind of munchkin like. Anyway I like John Madden and it was nice to see him and in that sky box with W. Al Michaels no doubt has to suck it up when he is around these NBC loons!

September 21, 2009 - 02:14 ET by KC MulvilleBoy, I agree with his comment that we have to make it worthwhile to go back to the stadium. Families can't go - certainly not mine. The only people who can afford it are corporations (who use them as perks) and young guys who have money to blow.
Watching a game in the stadium is so much different. Unlike other sports, most of the action can't fit into the camera frame. In baseball, for instance, the ball is the only thing that matters (perhaps 95% of the time), and the camera can always track the ball. In basketball, there is action without the ball, but the area is small enough that the camera can see it all. But in football, the action is spread all over the field, the camera can't catch it. When you see a quarterback drop back to pass, the camera follows him, so you can't see any of the routes. You can't see what the QB is looking at when he decides to throw somewhere. But when you go to the stadium, you can see the whole field. It adds a dimension to watching the game that TV just can't deliver.
As for Madden, I will miss him. I wish him luck.
Totally turned off to sports
September 21, 2009 - 08:24 ET by ncstevemHaving once been a sports fanatic, I can honestly say that Madden is one of the (many) reasons I pay very little attention to it anymore.
I found a fair amount of his commentary to be inane. Wish I could give you folks some examples but this is from years ago so I can't support my claim with some of Madden's quotes. The few times I watched a game that Madden announced I'd always seem to note 5 or 6 instances where he'd say something really stupid or non-sensical. It seems to me that most announcers talk just to fill air-time whether they have anything useful to say or not. Same goes for McCarver on baseball. I'd rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard.
Hhmm
September 21, 2009 - 08:39 ET by general companyI like McCarver as well. I would imagine talking for a few hours would produce some pretty stupid comments out of just about anyone. Madden was a good coach, and taught the game well. He help me turn my wife into a football fan, for that I am eternally grateful

What I found so amazing was
September 21, 2009 - 11:42 ET by Guapo DiabloWhat I found so amazing was Madden's vision of the entire field:
"This guy will go here. He's gonna block him. This receiver will cut across here. This receiver will run a fade here. He's going to pick up this guy..."
I was watching the ball and he was watching EVERYTHING.
What I found

What I found amazing was his description of his TV room.
I'll have one of those, please... :D
