The last time we saw CNN correspondent Susan Roesgen, she was arguing with folks at the April 15 Tea Party in Chicago claiming the event was "anti-government, anti-CNN [and] highly promoted by the right-wing conservative network Fox."
Although CNN officials won't blame the decision specifically on this event, the network has decided not to renew her contract.
All together now: Aaaaaawwww.
As reported by TVNewser Thursday:
TVNewser has learned CNN correspondent Susan Roesgen's contract will not be renewed and she will be leaving the network. [...]
Roesgen took a break for a few weeks after that reporting and returned to the air in May covering the Drew Peterson arrest. Most recently, she covered Michael Jackson's death from Los Angeles. Roesgen joined CNN in 2005.
When TVNewser asked whether Roesgen's comments at the Chicago tea party rally had anything to do with her not being renewed, a CNN spokesperson said, "I can't comment on personnel matters."
So is it actually possible that doing a poor job really can have some consequences in the news industry today?
Who'd have thought it?

July 17, 2009 - 10:02 ET by BigSpoon65Oh, thats right, it went bankrupt. Appears there just isn't a large job market out there for marxist freedom hating propagandists. Turns out lady liberty is still looking out for us after all and justice was served. Now she can join the soup lines where so many of her lefty friends gather to regale in the memories of what it was like to work back when we were still a capitalist nation.

Let's give the devil (CNN) his due.
Of course, they may just be trying to make the point that if you want to bash regular Americans, you should just do it in the studio during regular broadcasts....not cool to be out there doing it face to face....

Management Too
July 17, 2009 - 11:04 ET by slickwillie2001This is as much a management failure at CNN as it is a Roesgen failure. With proper management those that exhibit political bias can be corrected early in their career and taught to suppress it or put into jobs where it doesn't damage the organization. Roesgen might be gone but what she did to CNN can't be easily fixed.
Next they need to reconsider Anderson Cooper's role. Old boring Aaron Brown might be looking pretty good right now to the CNN bigs.

July 17, 2009 - 11:23 ET by SnappyNo doubt another casualty to these tough economic times. If I think positively about this I can imagine a slow awakening to the folly of her ways and thought process. Her slow eye opening as she fails to see the annointed one personally show up at her door and hand her a job and cash to make ends meet, a conversion of sorts takes place and she realizes what reality really is...............then I remember the shrill voice, the sloppy and biased reporting and refusal to listen to or give time on opposing views and realize she will not change, she will just get in line and curse Bush for causing her job loss.
Oh my heart bleeds...
July 17, 2009 - 11:31 ET by PrairieSkyIt's about time and good riddance! I would have fired that b$%&h months ago, but I am glad to see her go now. I have noticed though, that since Roesgen's despicable performance covering the Chicago tea party, CNN seems to have had her covering lower profile, lighter stuff.
Wonder if there are any openings over at MSNBC? She'd fit in perfectly over at that nut house...

July 17, 2009 - 11:43 ET by jaywlThis was nothing more than a low-on-the-totem-pole stringer embarrassing the network. CNN gets a two-fer, a pat on the back for proving critics wrong (?) and insulation from similar charges against their everyday biased anchors and reporters.

July 17, 2009 - 11:43 ET by fitzfongYeah, they really had no choice on this one. She was a low-level "reporter" who made herself the story and further exposed CNN's blatant ideological bias. She had embarrassed the network and she was expendable, so she had to go...this way they can cite her as an example to "prove" that they don't tolerate bias and unprofessionalism on their network, while simultaneously keeping Anderson Cooper, Kyra Phillips (who was equally culpable in this segment), Roland Martin, Christiane Amanpour, Michael Ware, Wolf Blitzer, Don Lemon and the never-ending conga line of left-wing hacks posing as objective reporters.

fitz...Exactly...But if CNN really...
July 17, 2009 - 11:59 ET by PrairieSkywanted to make an example of Roesgen and prove they don't tolerate bias (yeah, right) they would have fired her at the time this happened. As far as I'm concerned, they took the easy way out and waited till her contract was up for renegotiation, and then got rid of her by non-renewing her...Of course, if a miracle happened and CNN decided to change course and really wanted to prove they don't tolerate bias, they'd have to fire virtually all of their management, along with all their reporters and anchors.

July 17, 2009 - 12:33 ET by fitzfongHere's the thing: on the national stage, it makes little sense for anyone to pick her up. She's damaged goods, she wasn't a particularly notable reporter before this incident and rumor had it that Fox News turned her down twice before CNN hired her. That said, MSNBC made the conscious effort some time ago to position itself as the unapologetic left-wing propaganda network (in contrast to CNN's positioning itself as the "objective news source" despite its obvious left-wing bias)...as such, she may be hired at MSNBC to shame CNN for "giving in to corporate pressure...blah, blah, blah". If she doesn't get that lifeline, she's finished on the national stage.

July 17, 2009 - 12:40 ET by PrairieSkysurprised if that's where she ends up...Like I said earlier, she'd fit in perfectly over at that nut house...Her virulent brand of leftist liberalism is tailor made for MSNBC, and she'd blend in great with Chrissy, Olbertwit, Shuster, Contessa Brewer and the rest of their lunatics, on and off camera.
Like you said, if she doesn't land there, I think she's likely cooked nationally. Wouldn't that be a cryin' shame? ;)

The writing was on the wall
July 17, 2009 - 12:19 ET by fitzfongThe writing was on the wall at the outset. CNN effectively made their decision to fire her on the spot, but the most efficient and least attention-drawing way to do so was to let her contract expire. So they turfed her almost immediately (she went on a previously unscheduled "vacation" while the story coverage blew over), then buried her by assigning low profile and/or light news segments till the clock on her contract ran out. They were hoping that by the time her contract expired, most viewers would have forgotten about the controversy. Fox News did something similar when they chased off E.D. Hill.

fired on the spot
July 17, 2009 - 12:28 ET by sevenSeverence would be stiff
Yes let it expire. Then they can say the economy is soooo dificult and we just can't afford to renew even if we want to. They just don't have the budget.
fitz...Agreed...
July 17, 2009 - 12:31 ET by PrairieSkyI understand that this was likely the plan from the beginning of this mess, to let her contract run out and then can her, but it would have been nice if CNN really took a stand and fired her at the time. I know all the nets tend to do the "contract not renewed" thing when wanting to get rid of someone they no longer want (for whatever reason), but a show of integrity by firing her immediately would have been a refreshing change.
And if CNN thought or still thinks that viewers have forgotten about Roesgen's tea party fiasco, they are sorely mistaken.

July 17, 2009 - 12:37 ET by fitzfongPrairieSky,
You're right that if CNN had any integrity, they would have dumped her in public right away. But I'm sure they wanted to avoid as much litigation as possible.

July 17, 2009 - 12:17 ET by jawebster1of channel surfing, I still won't watch it though. In today's newspaper, (L.A. Times) they are claiming my few moments of watching makes them more watched than MSNBC or Fox. Since I have had my DVR, I have yet to record a CNN program while at the same time, I almost always record Beck, O'Reilly and Hannity. DVRs are great. You can speed past commercials AND Liberals like Juan Williams, Bob Beckel, Al Sharpton, Kristen Powers (bad, but not as bad as the others) AND Marc Lamont Hill, et al. Beck is great because he doesn't waste our time with Liberals. Jim Webster
