Stephanopoulos Uses Liberal Ad to Bash GOP and Sen. McConnell

CRITICAL UPDATE at end of post: AUC's founder and former president is now the communications director of the DNC.

On Sunday's "This Week," ABC's George Stephanopoulus played an advertisment created by a far-left political organization to bash the Republican Party and his guest Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Maybe even worse, the group responsible for this recent attack, Americans United for Change, targeted the Kentucky Senator for his position on the Iraq war back in March 2007

As ABC's Chief Washington Correspondent, it seems hard to believe Stephanopoulos was ignorant of the political leanings of this group or its past opposition to his guest.

Regardless, after introducing McConnell, and allowing the Senate minority leader to offer his views concerning the 2010 budget recently proposed by President Obama, Stephanopoulos went on the attack himself:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Well Senator, there's a lot of criticism there, but no alternative. And the Democratic Party and the White House are going to make a real push to paint you as "The Just Say No Party." Look what the DNC has put up on their website. They have this clock showing that it's been sixteen days, 20 hours, and eighteen minutes and counting since you've had a budget. An outside group called Americans United for Change is putting out this ad this morning making the same point. Listen.

An outside group?

Here's how this "outside group" bills itself:

The chief mission of Americans United For Change for the next two years is to amplify the progressive message - to contribute to a grass roots groundswell for progressive policies.  Progressives need to redefine "common sense" - by reasserting the primacy of the traditional progressive values that resonate with most Americans. We must define for the American people what Progressives stand for - both our policies and programs and our fundamental values.

Three years ago, FactCheck.org characterized this "outside group" as a "liberal, labor-funded" organization with many ties to the Democrat Party:

According to a Jan. 24 Associated Press story, the group has received $500,000 from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, a large labor union representing government workers. The AP also quote unnamed officials of Americans United as saying "Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California met with potential donors in Los Angeles earlier this month, underscoring their personal interest in the group's efforts ." The group's executive director Karen Olick had been chief of staff to Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California.

Here's the actual AP report from 2006:

An organization with strong backing from the top Democrats in Congress intends to launch a costly election-year campaign to promote issues on the party's agenda, officials said Tuesday, beginning with a television commercial arguing it's "time for a change" after a season of political corruption.

Nice "outside group," George.

For the record, before McConnell was interviewed this morning, Stephanopoulos spoke with Larry Summers, the head of the White House's National Economic Council, for sixteen minutes. Unlike how McConnell was ambushed, there were no conservative ads played bashing the Administration's economic plans that Summers was asked to respond to.

I wonder why.

*****Update: Stephanopoulos's tangled web is even more interesting for the founder and former president of AUC is Brad Woodhouse who just became the communications director for the DNC. On Friday, the DNC announced the creation of the "Party of No" clock that Stephanopoulos mentioned in his interview with McConnell. Woodhouse was quoted in this press release.

Add it all up, and on Friday, the DNC started a new campaign against Congressional Republicans. On Sunday, Stephanopoulos not only referred to this campaign, but also played an anti-GOP ad created by the organization founded and formerly led by the new DNC communications director.

Think this is just a coincidence?

Divert attention at all costs

Another weak attempt to undermine Republicans because they can't have anything positive to say about their own efforts.

That is an excellent

That is an excellent observation.

Anymore, Stephanopoulus is just a calmer version of Olbermann/Maddow.

George. OK that was a cheap trick; a smear commercial from a left wing group. How about for balance, we mention that the WSJ in it's annual survey of economists found that they gave the Obama administration a grade of "F" for their economic performance so far. I think that might suggest that the Republican party is the "party of considered concern for the citizens of this country."

Is the shoe ever seen on the other foot by the MSM, Noel?

That was a joke right?

George Needs A Break

I used to think that George Stephanopoulos was a straight shooter but it has become obvious that he was no more than a wolf in sheep's clothing waiting for the next liberal juggernaut that didn't include predatory tendancies.

George has obviously lost it. I can picture him wandering about the newsroom, hand in pocket, toying with a pocket full of "W" keys, mumbling, "who ate the strawberries."

Take a vacation George. You've tipped!!!

During the Bush years

He seemed to mostly keep himself in check during Bush years, but as soon as it looked like the libs would take over again, he's come out of his cage and is going full force with it.  He's a little man with a Napolean complex who can't wait to jump on the band wagon the minute he smells power

Save me...save me from tomorrow.  I don't want to sail with this ship of fools.

What percentage of the

What percentage of the general populuce of the U.S. is actually dumb to believe the never ending load of crap that keeps flowing from the MSM? I want that poll, with that question.

"Are you as an American citizen actually stupid enough to believe what the mainstream media tells you without question, like lambs to slaughter, or do you really have enough mid-brain function to breath on your own?

Something like that.

I think NB needs its own network.

Basketball???

Hey, Louisville won a basketblall game. All is right with the world. Oh wait, my son-in law who just lost his job doesn't think so. My friend who lost his retirement doesn't think so. But those irresponsible young'uns who didn't pay their mortgage and are getting bailed out are as happy as pigs in shit. Wake up America!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Things like this show that

Things like this show that not only is the media blatantly biased - but childish too. These are antics more suited for the playground: "My dad says your dad is stupid".

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Mitch

Guys like Mitch, and McCain, and Steele are what's wrong with the Republican party ( and all politicians ). No sense of urgency, as long as they still have theirs. How sad.

NREVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

isia,

They've all played the inside baseball game so long, they no longer have any sense of righteous anger and are totally disconnected from their base. It's so exasperating one could just cry...

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

iveseenitall

You're absolutely right buddy. For the first time in my life I sent money to the RNC and John McCain during the campaign, but only because Sarah Palin was on the ticket.

Now I get letters from the RNC asking me to contribute more but I will not. Instead, I will send a check every month for whatever I can afford to Sarahpac. Win or lose, she most closely reflects the values of true conservatism.

Maybe some day the RNC will figure it out.

Right on

I got an invitation in the mail to join a cruise with Newt, Steele, and the rest of the boys this summer. Starting at around 3 grand apiece. Of course, those are the cheap seats. I was shocked. Where's the recession? Sure, I can afford it. But I'm not going.  These guys, left and right, are all full of it. They are making fools of the American people. It's really time to clean house.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

National Economic Council, for sixteen minutes. Unlike how McConnell

I didn't see, it, but I will also bet that Steffie's questions to Summers weren't peppered with challenges such as Why haven't you  shouldn't you, and aren't you supposed to, like they were to McConnell.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows. -Bart Simpson

ABC Needs To Be Reminded Where Their Money Comes From

Face it, CBS, CNN, MSDNC and NBC are already too far gone, but there is still a possibility of turning ABC around.

If Libertarians, Capitalists, Conservatives and Republicans all started boycotting anything and everything Disney, Stephie and the rest of the ABC News talkers would be out of a job in a big hurry.

Don't support the enemy. Can this be any simpler? The power is in YOUR wallet.

Why doesn't anyone challenge

Why doesn't anyone challenge Steffie. I mean McConnell could have stated that Steffie was Obama's bitch, as is well known from the Politico reporting and Steffie has never outright denied it or could deny it with a straight face. McConnell could also have stated that Repubs are not the party of No, which is also a slander on every Repub in Congress and was again an attack framed by the White House and disseminated to their lackeys in the leftwing media. Do you want names Steffie, or do you get my drift? The repubs have time and again proposed bills but the partisans in the WH and in the Dem leadership in Congress will not bring them to a vote or vote them down because they don't favor leftwing special interest groups as do the President's and Pelosi's crapulus bills.

eagle...

You are right about what the Repulicans have done. But your question is more important:  "Why doesn't anyone challenge Steffie?"  There's the rub. The "gentlemen" in the Republican Party will never do it. And that is exactly why Republicans are where they are! Perhaps they lack the ability of a Stffie to do it with a smile. If so, they should get the hell out of the way and let someone with speaking talent do the job. Or, perhaps they have lost sight of what their job really is --- to be the OPPOSITION.

sorry

Stephanopoulus is just a Clintionite HACK

Stephanopoulus learned well while he worked with Clinton and Carville. It is always apparent with this show. This does not surprise me and just typical.

Although McConnell is the earmark king, it is still unfair to attack anyone like that , especially with partisan ads. I would not have a problem if they questioned him on his earmarks and anything else he says and does that is not Conservative. Hey, why not question some Libs about the same. But, I am asking him to be a journalist, which he is not, and to be fair and balance, which no one in the MSM is that!

"Well Senator, there's a

"Well Senator, there's a lot of criticism there, but no alternative."

When is the GOP going to grow a nutsack and fight back? Stop letting them paint us as not offering alternatives. We obviously need some younger, and more tech savvy, party workers who can create a grassroots groundswell like the obamites did with this last campaign. A campaign, that apparently, is never going to end. Now they are sending their digital brownshirts out once more to pump the prez's socialist programs.

It's disingenuous for this

It's disingenuous for this group to even include Michael Steele and Gov. Palin in their ad; these two do not have anything to do with the federal budget.

They, meaning the MSM and

They, meaning the MSM and all their adherents, cheerleaders, and participants, should be rounded up and horse-whipped on national television.

Seriously.

Think this is just a coincidence?

ABC's Stephanopoulos is actually the real white house spokesperson, Axlerod, Rahm, Carville, and Obama knew Stephanopoulos would reach a larger audience through ABC;  Gibbs is just for show.

They are the most transparent admin. ever...anyone with half a brain can figure this out!

I smell libtard desperation...

"I smell libtard desperation"
And here I thought the NB toilet was stopped up......

My mistake.

Despair and Socialism

AUC campaign, Stephanapoulos

Notice who's the first to appear in the ad, not a Congressional leader not Rush Limbaugh, but Sarah Palin, from her convention speech, Because she drove the skepticism toward the autobailout, at RGA meeting, she bailed out Chambliss, she layed out the conditions for the stimulus, which allowed the House GOP to turn it down, and she was very critical as to what parts of the stimulus to except before Sanford and Jindal, It's a realization by the opposition that she is the GOP "leader in exile" so to speak while PopTech post his thousandth Romney resume, and David Frum/Brooks have their latest conniption

16 days, somany minutes and umteen seconds...............

And all they say is no?

What about the suggestions put forth to.....
cut personal taxes
cut capital gains taxes
do not spend on projects 2 years down the road
do not give people who cannot afford to pay mortgages a mortgage
accountability for money spent
stop pushing national health care - now is not the time
stop pushing card check - unions are an unnessary cost of business

A crisis is a terrible thing to waste - So is a brain, numbskull

Another day, another

Another day, another ambush.

Georgie's show is just one long, boring DNC infommercial anyway.
