If you needed an alarm to go off signaling President Obama's honeymoon with the press being over, you got it Thursday when former CBS "Evening News" anchor Dan Rather severely chastised the new administration for not doing enough to solve today's economic problems.
Writing for the Daily Beast, the man who once used a forged document in an attempt to bring down former President George W. Bush wondered why more people aren't outraged about how little has been done by Obama and Company to right what he believes is a sinking ship.
Caution -- you're about to enter a no kidding zone:
Where is the outrage from We The People? And where is the outrage—or sense of outrage—from the Treasury Department, from Congress, and, yes, from the White House and the new president himself?
We are in a downward economic spiral and the worst is probably yet to come. The situation threatens our own and future generations. Yet there is no transparency, no accountability, and no clearly-stated plan to pull us out.
Outrage is seldom justified and rarely wise, but in this fix it is both. Nevertheless, what we have gotten and are getting still is blather. [...]
Our huge economy is comprised of a vast collection of families, and the health of our markets and our financial institutions revolves around those families. [...]
Again and again, they are told, “Help is on the way.” Where is it? And while those in power in Washington dither over these people’s problems while prioritizing the problems of financial institutions, where’s the transparency and accountability?
Well, Dan, maybe if you and your fellow so-called journalists would have asked presidential candidate Obama some tough questions about his economic plans last year instead of aiding and abetting his election we wouldn't be in this mess and you wouldn't be so outraged.
I'm just saying.

February 12, 2009 - 17:24 ET by jdhawkWhat Rather is pissed about is 180 degrees out from what we as conservatives are pissed about. What he wants is even further forays into socialism and hurry up about it!
As usual Rather could not be more wrong. This president and his majority congress is moving head long into socialism. The short view is that it will greatly prolong this economic downturn. Note, the reaction the markets have had of late.
Meanwhile, Geitner just now received his first long pants! Yes, it is true, the boy "wonder", Geitner aka Treasury Secretary, aka Timmy Turbo Tax, has yet to come up with a plan to sort out the bad assets on our banks books. But, he does have long pants now. So, a plan should not be far off!
Hot off the presses is this mop, Senator Gregg. He pulls out of being nominated as Commerce Secretary because he disagrees with the president on the stimulus bill among other things, but only AFTER the stimulus vote goes through. Perhaps, if just one dimocrat senator had voted no on this porkulus bill it might have given some backbone to our RHINOs.

February 12, 2009 - 17:39 ET by R D HelmHe may very well be right, but I hardly see how detonating a massive charge that is pressed against the hull, and well below the water line, is going to prevent the good ship America from ultimately sliding beneath the waves.

February 12, 2009 - 19:37 ET by danebramageI think that's a very astute observation, HeavyChevy. I think Rather is trying to kill two birds with one stone: one, he's trying to rescue his reputation, and two, he's trying to get his loverboy Obama's agenda implemented as quickly as possible.
But criticizing Republicans for pulling in the other direction while criticizing Democrats for not pulling fast enough in theirs is not the same as "playing it straight down the middle," which is what Mr. Rather still pompously and ridiculously claims to do.

February 12, 2009 - 20:22 ET by semolina_filcherMark Levin mentioned on his show today that the taking of the census is a Constitutional function, written for a government agency to carry out every decade, however it is carried out is the responsibility of said government agency. On the other hand, hijacking the census itself as Obama and Rahmbo proposes to do, with the intent of making it a permanent governmental function, my presumption anyway, would be illegal.
As a constitutional function, it is a requirement to count the population of the Union as written in by the Founding Fathers. As a governmental function, Obama and the Dems census taking is definitive as a tool for complete dominance of the population, probably using the likes of ACORN and local unions to spearhead the way. So really, we are royally screwed no matter.

Yep! That's perfect!
I am certainly glad Dan has a handle on what is happening.
February 13, 2009 - 01:00 ET by JWFBecause I certainly don't. I thought we had a good old fasioned panic. Yea, they have changed the name - bust, depression, recession, slowdown, decline, downturn, meltdown, slump, crash. But they are all the same thing. Government just wants us to think it is different this time so they have an excuse to take some kind of action.
But they are all alike. People quit lending because they don't trust the lendee to be able to actually pay back the money. Poorly performing businesses go under and leave behind stronger businesses. After a while, people are no longer worried so much about lending money to those stronger businesses. And pretty soon things start to return to normal.
Silly me. I thought the best thing the government could do was GET OUT OF THE WAY. Stop taking so much money out of the system so that when trust does come back, people will HAVE money to lend again.
Oh, another stupid thought I have. The government most definitely should not say or do stuff that does not instill confidence that lending will resume. Like fer example, say they are coming in to save big financial institutions, then save a few, and inexplicably let one fail. Or maybe the TOP GUY in the government telling us it will get worse and worse for YEARS to come. Or the TOP GUY says only this one tax cheater can fix it and then the tax cheater steps in front of Congress and says, gee, we have to think about this, maybe try some new stuff, don't know, we will get back to you.
Thank the lord above we have Dan instilling confidence in the future!

February 13, 2009 - 11:23 ET by JRJ08Any article that starts out with a totally misleading statement has zero credibility. Dan Rather did not knowingly use a forged document in his news report about Bush's military service. His producer did. Even if he had the technical expertise to recognize a phony document, which he does not, it was not Rather's job to validate documents, nor is it any anchor's job to do that. So, right off the bat, you don't know what you're talking about. In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. - Ronald Reagan from his first inaugural address
