For those folks that aren't at the Frank Sevigne Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska, to see Brandon Sheppard compete against the nation's best high jumpers, here's your chance to discuss tomorrow's Super Bowl, or any other sporting event.
To get the ball rolling, is Tom Brady the best quarterback ever?

Yes best ever!
February 2, 2008 - 13:30 ET by shawn228Tom Brady pretty much had to be Michael Jordon and do it all himself. I mean he had Deion Branch, but who else? He won 3 Superbowls and the conference finals last yr but never had record setting numbers.
This yr, he has a talented group of receivers and he has smashed many records. I was and still am a big Montana fan, but Brady is in a league of his own. I have never seen a person so cool in the pocket.

February 2, 2008 - 13:36 ET by Noel SheppardRimsky,
Thanks. This is one of the most exciting days of my life. Coming to this meet was a completely spontaneous, last-minute decision. I've never seen him compete on the collegiate level, and this is going to be tremendous. 22 schools are here. My hotel is FILLED with track athletes from around the country.
And, in about four hours, my son will be competing against some of the top jumpers in the nation...with me in the bleachers crying my eyes out.
Does it get any better? ns

February 2, 2008 - 13:31 ET by ConservativeRexI don't think the best ever, there once was a fella named Montana I believe. Also, a little earlier in my generation, there was another fella named Unitas. But for the current generation Brady is indeed the best QB.
I do have to admit, that in all my years, I believe this years New England team is the best I've seen.

Brady
February 2, 2008 - 13:51 ET by Noel SheppardNBers,
I can't be impartial on the Brady vs. Montana issue, for I'm a 49er fan that lived through and watched those amazing years of football by my Bay.
That said, I think what made Montana legend was the touchdown throw to Dwight Clark -- now known simply as "The Catch" -- to defeat the Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Championship Game, as well as the winning drive -- now known simply as "The Drive" -- to win Super Bowl XXII. Both these events are HUGE in NFL history, and part of the legend that is Joe Montana.
Has Brady orchestrated two game-winning touchdown drives late in the fourth quarter of such high-profile games yet? Is that the difference between greatness and legend?
I remember years ago reading an interview with Jimmy Johnson after the Cowboys had beaten a Steve Young-led 49er team in the NFC Championship game in 1992 I believe. This was before Montana was traded to the Chiefs. He mentioned that one of the things that made him nervous about the game was the thought that if his defensive line knocked Young out of the game with an injury, Montana was looming on the sidelines. He said he feared Montana more than anybody in the game.
Does Brady have that mystique yet?
Patriots fans should not take any of this as hating on Tom or the Pats. I said from the outset that I can't be impartial on this issue. Can anybody who is a fan of either of these teams? ns
Noel
February 2, 2008 - 14:13 ET by shawn228Sorry when you mentioned Brandon Sheppard, I did not know that he was your son. Congratulations, you must be very proud.
Like you, I live in the SF bay area. I have been here for 10 yrs and my loyolties are split between the Raiders and Niners. As far as game winning drives go, Didn't Brady orchestrate a very impressive drive against the Rams that resulted in a field goal with less than a minute on the clock, I believe he did almost exactly the same thing agains the Carolina Panthers a few yrs later. Both Superbowl games. His fourth quarter comebacks this yr agains the Colts, Jags and Giants have been nothing less than amazing. Joe Montana was a great quarterback and best of all time before Brady, but don't forget he had Jerry Rice. Arguably Steve Young could have done just as good of a job. Rice and Young combo have more touchdowns than anybody except for Manning and Harrison.

Brady
February 2, 2008 - 14:17 ET by Del DolemonteBrady has orchestrated 24 game-winning drives to break a tie or take the lead in the fourth quarter or overtime. Six of his game-winning efforts have come in the postseason.
The biggest? Brady led the Pats in a big 4th quarter (final minute to boot) drive to upset the Rams in his first Super Bowl victory.
The remarkable thing about New England is that they have continued to be good despite the odds, which include things like free agents and salary caps.
Back when Montana was playing, his team didn't have to worry about the salary cap, which didn't come in until 1993, after the Niners had already won 4 Super Bowls.
Del, Shawn, et al
February 2, 2008 - 14:40 ET by Noel SheppardGents,
Well, maybe my bias is getting the best of me, but I think setting up a winning field goal is different than throwing a winning touchdown pass. After all, the kicker, the snapper, and the holder have a lot to do with the former, don't you think?
Again, I'm not trying to bash Tom. However, Joe has two amazing events in the sport with their own names. Does Tom? :-)
Please be advised that this is all meant with good-sportsmanship in mind. I'm not trying to be inflammatory, especially two hours before the biggest meet in my son's life. :-) ns
Montana
February 2, 2008 - 16:08 ET by Del DolemonteThere are differences between the games. That first Super Bowl win for Brady didn't require a touchdown to win it. On the other hand, Montana had to throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl against the Bengals, because his team was down 16-13 at the time. A field goal wouldn't have done it.
We'll never know whether or not Brady could have thrown a winning touch instead of setting up the FG against the Rams. I think he probably could have.
FYI, Joe does have about 8 or 9 more 4th quarter comebacks than Brady, at least for now.
It is always good to hear
February 2, 2008 - 14:25 ET by Roger the ShrubberIt is always good to hear the love of yet another quarterback legend from western PA.
A little anecdote about Montana: when you walk into his high school alma mater, Ringgold, in Monongahela, PA, today, there is a HUGE display case, full of Montana stuff from ND and SF/KC, etc. This school district has produced some other serious sports legends: Ken Griffey Sr., Stan Musial, and Minny Viking all-time best kicker, Fred Cox (a 4-time Super Bowl loser, no less!).
As for the Super Bowl, who cares who wins, when more important stuff is on!

As for a great quarterback, I think the answer is in whether non-football fans, such as myself, are aware of him or not. I've always been aware of Unitas, Montana and Bradshaw, but the only thing I've known about Brady until recently is that he split from his pregnant girlfriend.

February 2, 2008 - 14:17 ET by ricklailI have a lot of respect for former Eagles QB Ron "Jaws" Jarwarski (?) because of the time and effort he puts into breaking down film of teams he picks. He is running about 70% correct for the season with his picks. He says Pats 38 Giants 24. I am going with "Jaws."

Brady?
February 2, 2008 - 15:06 ET by KC MulvilleI think it's impossible to compare eras. So many rules are different, making the game different. You measure a quarterback on his whole set of skills, intelligence, and toughness, but the rule changes make different skills more important in different eras. To be blunt, these guys aren't playing the same game.
In my opinion, the biggest difference is that the modern defenses are so much faster. You know why you never see a team attempt a real sweep anymore? It's because the linebackers are too fast. Team defenses are too fast, and they leave precious little room for offenses to make yards. That's why New England is so impressive - they're doing it against the fastest defenses in history.
PS: Good luck to your boy. Just out of curiosity, are you an ex-jock? That would make it even tougher.
I agree, KC. Different rules, different era, different game....
February 2, 2008 - 17:09 ET by RJBUT....I have to say the thing that impressed me most about Brady happened in the last Giants game. Their game plan was to get to him and they did....physically, but not mentally. They kept knocking him down, but he never flinched. He just stood in there to the last second every time, knowing another hit was coming. Great stuff.
Since Brady is a little
February 2, 2008 - 15:25 ET by ckc1227Since Brady is a little banged up, I think the Patriots should just forfeit the game. Think about it, it's either play an injured Brady, or the back-up quarterback, neither one a very good choice. If they lose their perfect season by playing a banged up Brady, the Patriots will be humiliated and damaged for decades to come, known only as the team that blew it.
To hell with the "lesser of two evils" crap. Therefore, it's only logical that Patriot management forfeit the game to punish Brady for getting injured. Maybe he'll learn his lesson and never get injured again, PLUS, it might even motivate him so much that he becomes without a doubt the greatest quarterback the sport of football has ever seen. It also let's the coaches off the hook from having to make a decision. Much better to just forfeit than play the game with the best guy you have.
If nothing else, it will motivate the Patriots to draft a quarterback in a future draft that refuses to get injured just before the biggest game of the year.
:)
Go Patriots! Only because I want to see history made.

The crooks & cheats from Boston
February 2, 2008 - 17:19 ET by countywolfI watched NFL Commish Goodell the other day 'protect the brand' on TV. He has to. There is literally billions involved in the big picture of the NFL brand name. If cheating is allowed nobody watches anymore or gambles on the games. Goodell and 'the Mob' have a lot at stake. I watched the Boston team for years and wondered how the hell are they doing it with no big name talent, easy when you cheat. Belicheat was practically born in an NFL locker room. His father was an NFL assistant coach for many years. Belicheat was in diapers in NFL locker rooms . If anybody, ANYBODY knows how to cheat it's the crook Belicheat. He knows everything to know and MORE about NFL football. If anybody can figure an edge to cheat it's Belicheat. He's as bogus as a 3 dollar bill. Just look at him in is dirty hooded sweatshirt and 'I don't want to talk about it anymore' stance. He looks and acts DIRTY. As a retrired major city police detective I'd say the rat is dirty, somehow. If you're innocent you don't destroy evidence proving you innocent. The goofy commish destroyed the taped evidence, why - TO PROTECT THE BRAND, THE NAME OF THE NFL, that's why. Kraft would pay ten times the fine he got to get another ring. He's a billionaire. The whole coaching staff should've been fired, at least. How many years have they been cheating? Have they stopped now? Who knows! That's why they should've been sacked AND banned for life. That would've sent a signal to anyone else cheating. To me the Boston team (I refuse to say 'patriots', it's an insult to real patriots) will always be tainted, always have an asterisk next to their records. Of course they'll win tomorrow, THEY CHEAT!

You forget that he's basically running the defense only, as that is what he was trained to do.
And remember, Bill went 5-11 in his first season as Pats head coach. Was he cheating then too?
By the way, despite the "cheating", he was named 2007 NFL Coach of the Year. Why would the NFL want to glorify him that way?
Jealous, hell no!
February 2, 2008 - 22:42 ET by countywolfYeah he was cheating at 5-11. Cheating doesn't always bring victory. If the NFL admitted that he was cheating a lot less people would watch and/or bet on the games. They either chastise him and ban him or glorify him to protect the brand name. Jason Seahorn on the weekly FOX pro football show with Eddie George and Timmy Brown said, when Timmy expressed dismay and disgust at Belicheat, that THEY ALL should cheat. What a jerk. Jason laughed the cheating off like so what if you can get away with it, do it. Timmy definitely did not like his comments very much. Timmy is one who felt Belicheat and his staff should be banned and an asterisk put in the record book. Look, there are a lot of ex-CIA, exFBI guys around in 'secuity' work, both in protection and industrial espionage. How hard would it be for a pro to get a play book or spy on opposition hard enough or even have a guy on the opposing bench being paid for info. You think these owners are the Boy Scouts, or are running a high school team? Owners like Kraft or Jerry Jones would give their eye teeth and a lot more than 500,000 dollars for a Super Bowl ring. I'd say Belicheats' guys were/are getting both the offensive and defensive opponets signals some how, and still have radios in every helmit an are barking instructions to their players on what's coming up. Sure, it ain't easy or fool proof. But it's only money and the owners have plenty. It probably took 'em a few years to perfect a working system. I used to think Kraft sold his soul to he devil the way they won games and Super Bowls with NO BIG NAMES! We'll see tomorrow! GO GIANTS!!!
Tom Brady is Fax Brady
February 2, 2008 - 17:24 ET by Lame CherryIt gets rather boorish in this "Tom Brady is the greatest ever" when if one recalls that Randy Moss' last quarterback who was allowed to play when the Viking went 15-1 in one Daunte Culpepper due to the fact the NFL had instituted a no touch, policy on Dennis Green's black team for promoting race that Culpepper played well too.......until he met the New York Giants in the playoffs who creamed them by 50 points.
I ask people to remember Terry Bradshaw brain slammed in game, I ask people to remember Tommy Kramer of the Vikings having his neck almost broken by the Rams Jack Youngblood, think of Big Ben of the Steelers in the pounding he takes like most quarterbacks from Hasselbeck to Farve with the Cowboys..........then think how Brady is left to stand back there and as Michael Strahan excuses his not hitting him by, "I like Tom he is a nice guy".
Anyone reading this could play NFL quarterback if the NFL has a no touch policy on Brady just like if Michael Jordan had had to play during the Larry Bird years Air Jordan would have been slammed to the flooring ending his career as that is how Rambus, Parish and McHale all had to play.
Brady is ok at quarterback, but let the NFL really play him and penalize the Patriots for the cheating they do and stop because of "Maguire and Sosa fake baseball homerun duels" putting the Patriots in the league with the Miami Dolphins who really were undefeated and played that way.
ANY of the teams playing the Patriots this year in the last games should have beat them...........I mean come on Randy Moss HAS 2 UNDER THROWN BALLS TWICE TO HIM RIGHT AFTER ANOTHER and he drops the first as the defense stands and watches him and catches the second while the defense stands watching to give the Pats the win?
Yeah right. There is a great deal of cheating, referees being paid off by gambling odds makers and other referees knowing what is going on and "throwing flags to even things out" and tapes mysteriously erased by the Patriots when Congress wants to investigate.
Let Big Ben stand in the pocket forever on each down and he will be greater than Brady........and it is NOT BECAUSE THE NEW ENGLAND line is so great. When the Jags blitzed Brady down he went and by miracle his balls were all dropped by the receivers.
IF the Giants show up tomorrow as other teams should have this season in busting Brady so he plays hurt like other quaterbacks have to, mug Moss and company, then the Patriots will look like the Arizona Cardinals.
It is that simple. The Giants follow my game plan that I have posted time and again here and that the NFL started to implement the next week, but teams let the Pats win........the Giants will cream the Patriots tomorrow.
But let us have reality here. Brady is not Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Archie Manning, Bart Starr, Johnny Unitis nor Roger Staubach. Those guys got the hell beat out of them and were super stars.
Brady is a high paid figment of the owner of the Patriots rich pockets.
We will see tomorrow if the rich owners of the Giants stomp the illusion of the Patriots the way they did the Vikings.
The way Rush Limbaugh exposed Donavan McNabb was not that great of quarterback but a product of affirmative action. Tom Brady is the liberal equal of that, except his is paid off bribes.

February 2, 2008 - 17:35 ET by mikejI absolutely despise the Patriots and Tom Brady. But that doesn't mean that's he's a bad QB. I think he would have to be considered in the best ever category.
I would say that I think this cheating scandal with the Pats does cloud my judgement some. Here in Nashville one of our sports talk shows has former Titans TE Frank Wycheck on it, who is a huge Brady/Pats fan, but he said during the time he was on the team and they played them, he can now remember it being a little odd that NE seemed to know the Titans plays inside and out.
I alos think Brady benefitted hugely from the weather in NE and some timely calls, remember the every popular Tuck Rule when the Raiders had them beat?
I would put Brady, Montana and Bradshaw up there. FWIW I think that the 89 49ers team that destroyed Denver in the Super Bowl would beat this years Pats. I think there's a few teams that could beat them fairly soundly. But, this isn't PlayStation.

Back In The Day
February 2, 2008 - 21:21 ET by Del DolemonteFrom the dawn of televised NFL games in the old days, the Giants were the only game in town on most New England TV sets for many years. That's partly because the Pats didn't start until the early 1960s, but also because they sucked back then.
CBS had the NFC, and would pipe Gints games in to the New England affiliates on an almost weekly basis. Meanwhile, on NBC, which had the AFC, we got...the Miami Dolphins. The Pats rarely sold out home games, so we were shut out.
As a result there are still some pockets of hardcore NYG fans in New England, expecially in CT.

Mike Martz made a lot of blunders, but that Rams team was vastly superior to the Pats. F'in Bellichick filming the Rams' run-through practice a couple days before the big game resulting in one key play could have made (did make) all the difference.

"At no point was he asked to identify himself or produce a press pass"
Non-case. Especially since no source is named in the article. But if it's the same guy who was in the news yesterday, let's remember that he's a fired ex-Pats employee.

Go Zags
February 3, 2008 - 06:36 ET by SouthJersey1953bigtimer - this post should have been under yours....
I may have asked you before, but where in Spokane are you? I grew up in the Valley, near the East Trent Theatre.
BTW - I HATE how the local (Philly) sportscasters pronounce Gonzaga. The say Gonz-"ah"-ga. You'd think with the team 'nickname' the ZAGS that they could figure it out on their own....
Also: GO GIANTS!!! (would rather it be the Seahawks, but....maybe next year)

The Evil Empire
February 3, 2008 - 10:07 ET by CrashI saw a news blurb about Arlen Specter wanting to investigate the destruction of patriots spy tapes.
Okay ... why? What is Washington's fascination with cheating in sports? Haven't people like Specter been lying and cheating US citizens for years? What's next ... an investigation of Hollywood debauchery; why can't they keep Britney in rehab, what happened to the "clean & wholesome" Heath?
I've got a better idea Arlen. How about investigating how national security ALWAYS needs to be rebuilt after Democrat presidents leave the Whitehouse?
I could care less who wins a GAME Arlen ole boy, so, watch the Super Bowl and shut the f@ck up!
