It is impossible to eliminate prejudice and bigotry. There are still Irish and Italians in the Northeast who distrust and "hate" each other. The only reason they are not more overtly bigoted is because it's harder to distinguish national orign than it is skin color. There will always be a small % of the population that is prejudiced against someother segment of the population.

What does a nose hanging from a tree symbolize? It symbolizes a lynching and is not targetted (probably) at one person but falls under the "making terroristic threats" statute that is part of the Patriot Act.

What does the beating and attempted murder of another person symbolize? it symbolizes nothing, but is still a crime.

Which crime is "worse"? One that is meant to symbolize hatred and intimidation, or one that almost kills someone and puts them in a hospital?

take a look at the demographics of Melencamp's "Small Town".  Wonder why he never wrote a song about the 0.7% Black population of his county?
