Managing The News For Hillary's Sake

(As read on-air by Rush Limbaugh)

One hot and humid weekend this past July, America’s leading Democrats -- including some of the early favorites for their party’s 2008 presidential nomination such as Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN), Governor Tom Vilsack (D-IA), and Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) -- gathered in Columbus, Ohio at a conference hosted by the centrist Democratic Leadership Council.

Predictably, the press had a hard time controlling its glee when Senator Clinton was announced as the point-person to lead the DLC’s new political offensive -- code name “American Dream Initiative” -- to define the party’s agenda for 2006 and 2008.

As Ron Brownstein of the Los Angeles Times put it:

The appointment solidified the identification of Clinton, once considered a champion of the party's left, with the centrist movement that helped propel her husband to the White House in 1992. It also continued her effort, which has accelerated in recent months, to present herself as a moderate on issues such as national security, immigration and abortion.

Unfortunately, Mr. Brownstein -- much like the rest of the mainstream print media as far as I can tell -- chose not to be completely honest with his readers -- or the American public for that matter -- concerning just how far to the right Mrs. Clinton was going by affiliating herself with this organization, and, maybe most important, what was actually in this “Dream Initiative”. (cont'd...)

In fact, from the Google searches I’ve done, the only major news outlet that reported the full agenda addressed at this conference was Bloomberg.

Why might that be?

Well, let’s take a look at the laundry list discussed at this weekend meeting as the DLC’s “blueprint for change” reported by Bloomberg’s Brendan Murray on July 25:

  • Increasing the size of the U.S. military by 100,000 personnel and assuring the services can recruit on college campuses.
  • Altering the tax code to provide a $3,000-a-year college tax credit, a universal home mortgage deduction for people who don't itemize their taxes, an expanded family tax credit for couples with children and a universal pension that replaces 16 existing IRA-style accounts with one portable retirement account.
  • Cutting oil imports by 25 percent by 2025 and converting government vehicles to the use of hybrid engines by 2010.
  • Reducing congressional and non-defense federal government staff by 10 percent, cutting government consultants by 150,000, slashing ``excessive'' highway spending 50 percent and bringing back limits on discretionary spending.
  • Enacting tax cuts that encourage investment and setting up a Corporate Subsidy Reform Commission that cuts $30 billion in business subsidies at year for the next decade.
  • Lowering health care costs by investing in technology and research to find cures for diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
  • Adopting a uniform ratings system for ``entertainment media'' that market products to children.
  • Cracking down on government corruption by forbidding members of Congress and administration officials from becoming lobbyists when they leave office.

(As an aside, the full text of this agenda can be found in an article written by DLC Founder and CEO Bill From, and DLC President Bruce Reed, in the DLC’s magazine Blueprint.)

I guess that about explains why nobody other than Bloomberg reported this.

After all, it certainly won’t be easy for Senator Clinton to win re-election in liberal New York in 2006, or to garner enough delegates to capture her party’s presidential nomination in 2008, if she runs on a platform to increase the size of our military, assure college access to military recruiters, cut a variety of taxes, slash highway spending 50%, and reduce the number of federal government employees.

Undoubtedly, such proposals won’t play very well in the nation’s bluest states, as cutting taxes, expanding the military, reducing spending, and shrinking the government are not typically associated with core liberal values. Hillary and her handlers are obviously quite cognizant of this, and likely appreciated the press’s decision to bury this aspect of the story.

In fact, this reporting blackout affords Hillary the luxury of continuing to appear extremely liberal to folks in New York, as well as to left-leaning Democrats nationwide who typically vote in primaries and caucuses.

Then, assuming she holds her senate seat and wins her party’s presidential nomination with this strategy, her affiliation with the DLC -- along with a more timely release of the agenda incorporated within this “Dream Initiative”-- will allow Hillary to present herself to the rest of the electorate as being significantly more moderate than they previously believed.

Frankly, George Bernard Shaw couldn’t have scripted it any better.

It therefore becomes painfully obvious given the absence of media coverage concerning the specifics of this DLC agenda that America’s news editors and producers were all keenly aware that its dissemination at this time would not be in the best interest of Senator Clinton or the Democratic Party, and, as a result, consciously omitted it from their conference coverage.

What this disturbingly demonstrates is just how far America’s mainstream press representatives are willing to go to get Senator Clinton in the White House in 2008.

If they won’t accurately report what was discussed at a conference like this -- with hundreds of press representatives running around trying to get interviews as well as photographs with their favorite politician -- what wouldn’t our glorious press do to ensure the return of their Lincoln Bedroom-renting heroes to the scene of their most heinous crimes?
