VIDEO: Actress Jennifer Garner: $500 Million for Toddler Care 'Not Enough'
Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner applauded President Barack Obama for already committing $500 million to federally funded education programs for "toddlers" but argued that it is "not enough."
“Last week, President Obama, such great news, he delivered on 500 million dollars for innovative early learning programs. I was proud to fight for this funding with Save the Children alongside our allies like the First Five Fund,” she said in a press conference at the Capitol.
The actress was joined by Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and Mark Shriver, the Vice President of Save the Children on Wednesday.
“It’s a fabulous accomplishment but it’s only a down payment. It’s still not enough to ensure that every toddler is prepared for a lifetime of success; that’s why all of this – the passage of this bill is so important.”
Senator Casey, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has introduced both the“Prepare All Kids Act” which would help states provide at least one year of early education to children and the“Starting Early, Starting Right Act” that would give states funds to increase access to child care for low-income families.
Sen. Casey used a verse from the Apocrypha, Sirach 6:14, to describe his support for the legislation.
“There’s a great line in the scriptures about a faithful friend, it says – somewhere, I’m not sure where but it’s in the scriptures – that a faithful friend is a sturdy shelter and he who has found one has found a treasure and I think one of the questions we have to ask ourselves especially in the midst of a very tough budget, a debate about deficit and debt where we’ve cut the size – where we’ve cut spending in the federal government dramatically this year; we’re going to cut it some more,” he said at the conference.
“Will we be, those of us who have votes, those of us who have a position in a public office, will we be that faithful friend to children? We will be that sturdy shelter?”
To highlight the need for the federal government to invest in early childhood education programs, Garner, who is married to Hollywood actor Ben Affleck, told the audience about the experience she has had with her own children.
“You guys look young like maybe you don’t have preschool age kids. Well, I do, I have a child entering pre-school this fall and a child entering kindergarten and believe it or not, a huge part of why you all are successful and bright and cheerful, clean, pretty looking people is because you were able to sit in a circle when you got to kindergarten – that is kindergarten readiness,” said Garner, an Artist Ambassador for the organization Save the Children.
“It’s being able to get along with your peers, knowing what a rhyme is, my daughter, my 2 year old can spout mother goose from, you know, here to next week, that is, that comes from school.”

Utter nonsense. Just because the parents are out spending money on new rims for their cars and buying crack cocaine does not mean you and I should have to flip the bill for their offspring. Anybody who obtains government assistance seriously need to be tested for drugs and new tattoos on a monthly basis. Anytime it is found that money is being wasted on things like televisions, iPhones, jewelry, shoes, alcohol, rims, lottery tickets, etc. then they need to be cut off.

Garner is a perfect example of this, and the libnuts in D.C. are only too happy to recruit these Hollyweird dimbulbs as mouthpieces for their various liberal pet projects and legislation.
Personally, I wish Garner, and her equally insipid husband, Ben Affleck, would stick to their Hollywood careers (such as they are), and leave serious matters like how much taxpayer money is spent on which program, to the grownups, who have a few more neurons and a lot more common sense. Most of these celebrities are woefully ignorant about the issues on which they expound, and I wish that they would kindly shut up, unless and until they know what they are talking about.

I have an idea, some hard choices have to be made by all of us and it seems like now is the time and this will give almost everyone a warm fuzzy feeling, except of course those selfish people who want to keep the fruits of their labors we'll know how to deal with them. Anyway a committee with impeccable integrity, and compassion will be appointed to decide how much wealth people need, this will be subtracted from what people have, the difference collected and distributed until we've achieved social justice, with some exceptions. Anyone who complains will be declared an evil, selfish, racist, enemy of the people, and yes Jennifer will think they're mean too. Of course some examples will have to be made, attempts to reeducate, and more severe measures will be necessary on rare occasions but why quibble they're evil and no one likes them. If some people did happen to like them eventually they'd be too afraid to say anything. It will be as though they never existed, and then we'll have a heaven on earth utopia.

but the question is, why does it need tax money from Americans at a time that our economy is doing so bad?
yes, hollywood actress who refuses to make her own economic sacrifices and wants others to make the economic sacrifices she is unwilling ot make herself. Oh wait, maybe she is, instead of buying a $5000 dress, this year she will buy a $2000 dress, right?
Make money, be a millionare, but do not ask others, like the Liberal wealthy constantly do, to make sacrifices you are unwilling ot make first.

With a budget deficit in excess of $1 trillion is this really the best time -- or way -- to be spending a half billion dollars?
And spare me the "it's such a small sum does it really matter" argument. Yes. It does matter. In my opinion, the first rule of holes applies here.

No, this fits well with the, "I am a Liberal gizzillionare. I am also married to one!!!", "However, I am asking the tax payers to make the money sacrifices for my program which I am not ready or willing to make myself!!"
Are you seriously this dense Balboa? Her millions and Affleck's alone can make this program run. Affleck is best friends with Matt Damon and countless of other Hollywood gizzillionares, why do they need our tax money to run this program?!
To me is not so much about the Nanny State, wh ich is not a mantra but a reality, to me is the typical Hollywood elite, gizzillionare who demands tax money for her pet cause instead of asking her gizzillionare friends to make the sacrifices and donate to her pet cause.
It is wrong and immoral to ask for tax money for your pet program when it can survive with your gizzilliones and that of your family and very close friends.
this is the problem with Jennifer Garner, not her pet cause and program which seem very worthy, but with asking for tax money at a time that truly, there is none and when she, her husband and their buddies can make a few million dollar sacrifices.
Not Garner's fault

Never said that it is. Didn't even imply it. I'm not arguing against this because another Hollywood liberal supports it. Celebrity has nothing to do with my opposition. In the vernacular, for me it's all about the Benjamins.
"...celebrities are easy targets...."
Non sequitur. Everyone who has posted against this would be just as opposed whether or not any so-called celebrity was involved.
By the way, cute dismissal of people's concerns about overreaching government by characterizing it as "the NANNY STATE mantra."

Why don't Ben Affleck and Garner live on a salary of $100,000 each, so a household income of $200,000 and donate the rest of their Hollywood salaries to the causes they want?
Why do they want that I and the vast majority of americans, who make much, much, MUCH less millions than them to pay for ridiculous government programs?
Nothing wrong with being filthy rich and good for Affleck and Garner for being filthy rich, but instead of begging for government money, Hollywood, clueless, limousine driving elites need to come to the real world where we the Middle Class are taxed up to our necks in order to support programs that woud barely make a dent on the millions, upon millions that the Hollywood elite make.
and thrwoing money to education, as it has always been proven, is NEVER the solution. Good teachers, dedicated teachers and great parenting is what education need, not more money.

Sadly, too many Liberals believe in sympathy and helping others as long as it does not affect them.

instead of worrying about a dorkette like Garner, how about you hie your super-powered home state ass up to Sacramento and straighten out the REAL problems in the "Golden" State.
Unless, of course, berating those who berate bimbos is the extent of your super powers.

Why do the laws of economics not apply to the world of education?
We could sink the entire damned GDP of this country into education and not one outcome will change.
Not to mention we are also "bashing" her because she should be setting the example. This is a charitable country. She could set up a foundation with her own money for this cause. If she were to do so, there would be no end of singing her praises.
But no. Instead she goes to DC to whine about how the government isn't doing enough and how it needs to spend yet more money.

That assumes she hasn't done

That assumes she hasn't done something already or donated money. (I don't know if she has or not.)
And it seems she's not asking to just throw money at "education." it's for a very specific program.
That is precisely what the Feds do, bal---

they throw money at a problem.
Historically, it has never worked.
What makes you think the government record would somehow improve because a liberal, "caring celebrity", proposed aiming the socialist scattergun at a specific target (program)?
Dream on.

Department of Education - meh.
US Postal Service - meh, meh.
US Border Patrol - meh, meh, meh.
Amtrak - meh, meh, meh, meh.
I won't list the outstanding organization headed by Janet Incompetano Napolitano that frisks people at airports cuz I would run out of mehs.
Welfare - doled out locally, yes, but a government handout, nonetheless. Oh, that has worked out well, hasn't it?
Not too mention the seemingly limitless programs funded by the Feds which are completely outdated but are still receiving monies that come from good ol' taxes.
Now maybe you consider the 2 billion dollars per annum to Pakistan to be a means of insuring that their nukes won't end up in terrorist hands (if the Pakistanis were cut off from those funds), but I see that as a fool's errand and an enabler's gambit.
The G.I. Bill for educating returning soldiers would be a shining example of good, if it weren't more than canceled out by the shoddy conditions found at VA hospitals nationwide and the concomitant treatment some of our wounded warriors receive.
So, whatcha got on the plus side of the ledger, there, bal?

Matthewdean, but that is

Matthewdean,
but that is just it. either Liberals like Balboa are willful ignorant individuals who are clueless how terrible government services are, as you pointed out or they could careless.
I have been involved in very heated arguments with Liberals who swear up and down that the government will do it better. Of course, I then ask them why they donate to non-for-profits and private charities instead of the government they stare at me, clueless, like deer stares at headlights.
Why Liberals trust government so much when it has proven to care nothing about the individual or the society is beyond reason.

Considering the track record of public "education" in the United States alone, THAT should be enough to give us ALL pause when we think of trusting government with a "service" that doesn't , in the end, involve killing people. Because when you get right down to it, what the government does best is killing people.

I don't know if she has or not either, and if she has, that is laudable. If she was encouraging people to give of their own volition to her cause, that too is laudable.
When she starts whining for the government to become the United Way and to throw money at this "problem", it ceases to be laudable.
This very specific program she is trumpeting is an educational program, is it not? There is nothing that government loves to do more than to simply throw money at education. Sadly, there are WAY too many people who think that throwing more and more and more money at education SOLVES EVERYTHING.

Heck, from now on when you have a baby, let's just let some government stooge raise it until it's 18. Babies don't need no stinkin' parents. I guess they're afraid a little parental influence might interfere with their indoctrination.
