Clueless Cosmo Tweets About Making Buying a Gun in Missouri As 'Hard' As Getting an Abortion

December 18th, 2015 1:22 AM

The people who run Cosmopolitan Magazine's Twitter account really stepped in it today — and they're so utterly clueless that they doubled and tripled down on their ignorance.

Cosmo's tweeters have thrown themselves behind legislation drafted by Missouri State Representative Stacey Newman. Newman, a Democrat, actually believes that it is more difficult to get an abortion in the Show Me State than it is to buy a gun; her legislation would supposedly remedy this horrible situation. Cosmo is on board with horribly unhinged proposed legislation. The good folks at Twitchy pointed that out this afternoon, but that didn't stop Cosmo from doubling and tripling down on their ignorance (original tweets here, here and here) in the past 10 hours:

Newman's bill reads like a really bad attempt at sarcasm, especially with her "at least 120 miles from your home" requirement, but from all appearances she's serious — and bitterly angry. Here is the bill summary:

Well, to be specific but brief (and there are many other arguments I'm sure readers will supply):

  • It appears that you have to be 19 to get a concealed weapons permit in Missouri. A woman in Missouri can obtain an abortion on her own at age 18, and with a parent's permission at any age.
  • An abortion deliberately takes the life of another human. In 2011, apparently the latest year for which data is available, 5,820 human lives were lost to abortion in Missouri.
  • In 2013, there were 880 gun deaths in Missouri from all causes, deliberate or non-deliberate. In 2014, Missouri saw 403 deaths resulting from all forms of murder.
  • Thus, based on available data, it appears that over times as many human lives are lost to abortion than are lost to murder, and that Stacey Newman's priorities are misplaced. To the extent that Missouri's pro-life laws might have narrowed the degree of the difference just cited, they should be applauded, not condemned — and her bill, along with Cosmo's endorsement, is a sick attempt to change the subject away from a form of human life-taking evil she endorses.

Representative Newman has her priorities misplaced, as does Cosmo — as does national Planned Parenthood head Cecile Richards, who endorsed Newman and Cosmo Thursday evening in a tweet of her own:
