CBS News Wishes 'Happy 40th Wedding Anniversary' to the Clintons

October 12th, 2015 11:41 AM

CBS News may not be in the habit of celebrating wedding anniversaries on its Twitter page. George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush celebrated their 70th anniversary in January (didn't find a tweet or online article from CBS News), but it celebrated Bill and Hillary Clinton's "rocky union" today:

The article in the CBS link has a weird opening paragraph:

The United States' ultimate political power couple, Bill and Hillary Clinton, celebrate 40 years of marriage today. It's been a rocky union at times, especially during the 1990s when the former president faced allegations of infidelity and then an actual affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. But the pair remained together and rededicated themselves to the Clinton Global Foundation, Hillary Clinton's political career, and, recently, a grandchild.

Bill “faced allegations...and then an actual affair”? Or perhaps, it should state the president “denied allegations of infidelity until a DNA test of a blue dress proved otherwise”? CBS could explain that both the cheating husband and the wronged wife denied he had an affair with Monica Lewinsky for most of 1998. But they were more interested in gushing over the “ultimate political power couple.”

CBS allowed Bill Clinton, icon of credibility, to recount how allegedly super-naive Hillary learned:

1998: President Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky becomes public. He has described the night he told his wife as his worst personal day at the White House.

"She was angry and she was mad, and she was as mad about me not telling her before. I think is - almost as mad, but that I hadn't told her about it as what I'd done," he told 60 Minutes....

The former president spent months sleeping on the coach [sic] while then-first lady Hillary Clinton decided whether she wanted to stay in the relationship.

Should anyone believe the President of the United States was sleeping on a couch for months in the White House, with its multiple bedrooms? What other stereotype would CBS buy? That Hillary chased Bill around the kitchen with her rolling pin after baking cookies? CBS also posted both husband and wife’s sappy tweets from Sunday. Hillary's:

What's the "It' in "you've still got it"? And Bill's:

Reminder: this is how CBS News greeted the Clintons after a few months in power:

"If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, we’d take it right now and walk away winners....Tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her and we’re pulling for her." — CBS anchorman Dan Rather to President Clinton, via satellite, at a CBS affiliates meeting, referring to his new (and temporary) co-anchor Connie Chung to the Evening News, May 27, 1993.
