Paula Deen’s lucrative Food Network perch collapsed when she admitted in the proceedings of a failed lawsuit that she had used the N-word a “very long time ago.”

In a new cover story in People magazine, Deen says she didn’t want to get out of bed after the dramatic N-word reaction. But she was buoyed by visits from friends, including – very liberal comedian Kathy Griffin, who visited her in Savannah.

“One Sunday I opened up the gate to my house, and it was Kathy Griffin and her boyfriend,” said Deen. “She said ‘I don’t care what you say. I have a right to be your friend.’”

Deen starred in a 2009 episode of Griffin's Bravo show "Life on the D List," comforting Griffin after she failed to win a Grammy award.

"I could not get off the computer except to go to the bathroom and eat. It was so reassuring," Deen said, adding that she's been in therapy to help deal with the scandal. "If it wasn't for my fans' love, I'd be home breathing into a paper bag."
