'View' Crew on Hillary Papers: Applaud Mrs. Clinton for ‘Maturely’ Considering Her Own Role in Bill’s Affair

February 13th, 2014 9:59 AM

The co-hosts of The View on Tuesday applauded Hillary Clinton for new revelations from the so-called “Hillary papers,” a journal of a deceased friend. The then-First Lady is quoted as questioning how she could have prompted her husband’s affair with Monica Lewinsky. Sherri Shepherd touted, “I have to applaud Hillary Clinton because she's not taking responsibility for it, but I think that shows a sign of maturity.” [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

She continued, “It's very, very easy to say, ‘100 percent he was a jerk. He did it all.’  It takes two people.” According to Shepherd, Mrs. Clinton “wondered, “What’s my accountability?”  Barbara Walters sympathetically spun, “One other thing that Hillary said “because bill's mother had died, that this was maybe one of the reasons that he” had an affair.

Walters also became annoyed when Shepherd brought up Lewinsky’s stained red dress: “That’s unnecessary. Let her [Lewinsky] move on.”

In December of 2013, the veteran journalist interviewed Mrs. Clinton and enthused, “I listen to you and I think, ‘You got to run.’"

A transcript of the February 11 segment is below:

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Well, how about this? The journal of a close friend of Hillary Clinton has been made public and one passage claims that Hillary blamed herself in part for Bill's affair with Monica Lewinsky because Bill’s mom had passed, as well as Vince Foster, and Hillary thought she didn't take into account the personal toll it may have taken on him.

SHERRI SHEPHERD: You know, I applaud—I’m sorry, Barbara.

BARBARA WALTERS: No. Go ahead, darling.

SHEPHERD: I have to applaud Hillary Clinton because she's not taking responsibility for it, but I think that shows a sign of maturity. Because you all sit there -- It's very, very easy to say, “100 percent he was a jerk. He did it all.  It takes two people. She sat there and went, what is my accountability? What part did I play in this?”

JENNY MCCARTHY: Where’s my accountability?

WALTERS: She also said-- By the way, supposedly somebody said “oh, yeah,  Monica was loony.” I know Monica. Many things you may feel or not feel. Looney she's not. She's an intelligent person.

SHEPHERD: She is. She got the red dress. And a cigar.

WALTERS: Sherri, I think that’s unnecessary. I really do.

SHEPHERD: I mean, I’m not saying it’s loony.

WALTERS: Let her move on.  Sorry, darling. It’s just that I know her and I think it’s so easy to –One other thing that Hillary said “because bill's mother had died, that this was maybe one of the reasons that he –

MCCARTHY: It was her dad and his mom.

MCCARTHY: It was her dad and his mom.

GOLDBERG: You know what? This is the interpretation that we are making of someone's --

MCCARTHY: Dinner party.

GOLDBERG: Really, this lady wrote how she felt she heard things.

WALTERS: Yeah, this is a friend. Be careful what you tell your friends.

GOLDBERG: This is someone's journal that people are Reading. The lady died by the way in 2000. No one can say.

MCCARTHY: The dinner party was over 20 years ago.

GOLDBERG: We got to go. We'll be right back.
