Kanye West: I Was Complimenting Jews When I Said They Have More Money Than Blacks

As NewsBusters reported in November, rapper Kanye West during a radio interview made an anti-Semitic remark blaming Barack Obama’s inability to advance his agenda on black people not having the connections that Jews have.

During another radio interview Wednesday, West actually said he thought he was complimenting Jews when he made those remarks (video follows with transcript and commentary):

KANYE WEST: Also, there was another statement that I think that, you know, I thought that I was giving a compliment, but if anything, it came off more ignorant, when I said this comment about, you know, Jews having money and blacks not having money.

[Laughter]

WEST: You know, I think that it was kind of like an ignorant compliment.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Who’d you say that to?

[Laughter]

WEST: I think it was like an ignorant compliment.

[Laughter]

WEST: But I think what happened is that I was on, I don’t know how being told that you have money is like an insult. That would be like if like somebody complimented like black guys and said, “All black guys got big penises.” And then, and then you don’t want to be the black guy that raise their hand like, “No, that’s not true. I got proof!”

[Laughter]

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I’ve got a smaller one.

[Laughter]

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh my god!

[Laughter]

WEST: I thought by saying like everyone have money that was a compliment. It was like an ignorant compliment. Maybe I would like to take that statement away.

First off, notice the laughter from hosts J-Roman and Dougie Stylz of Chicago's B96 when West said, "Jews having money and blacks not having money."

I guess anti-Semitism is funny at that station.

As for West complimenting Jews with his remarks last month, let's review what he said:

WEST: Man, let me tell you something about George Bush and oil money and Obama and no money. People want to say Obama can't make these moves or he's not executing. That's because he ain't got those connections. Black people don't have the same level of connections as Jewish people. Black people don't have the same connection as oil people.

You know we don't know nobody that got a nice house. You know we don’t know nobody with paper like that we can go to when we down. You know they can just put us back or put us in a corporation. You know we ain’t in situation. Can you guarantee that your daughter can get a job at this radio station? But if you own this radio station, you could guarantee that. That’s what I’m talking about.

Anyone who believes that was a compliment must also think it's funny to say Jews have more money than black people ESPECIALLY coming from a man estimated to be worth $100 million.
