Matthews: If Obama Loses in '12 Conservatives Will Celebrate Death Penalty, Elevate Torture and Punish Gays

An overwhelming majority of Americans currently believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction.

Yet MSNBC's Chris Matthews told his "Hardball" audience Monday about how wonderful the world will be if President Obama is reelected next year, and warned that a loss for the man that gives him a thrill up his leg would send "Tea Partiers and neocons...celebrating the death penalty, elevating torture, ending environmental protection as we know it, breaking unions, punishing gays, starting more wars, and enacting one more giant tax cut for the rich – or worse" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Should President Obama run for reelection as a passionate progressive daring to be called radical by his enemies? Should he shoot the moon like FDR did back in 1936 or should he head closer to the center, stake out common ground with independents warning against the radicalism of the Right? Should he play it shrewd like Clinton did in ’96?

Well, think of the stakes. If he gets it right, he and the Democrats get four more years to get the economy finally back on track with full employment again the norm, the country heading forward to greener pastures, bluer skies, continuing the long, good march toward a cleaner environment, a protected climate, a more human, more tolerant, fully-employed society.

Readers are reminded that when the Democrats took over Congress in 2007, the unemployment rate was 4.4 percent. Now it's 9.1 percent.

Does Matthews know this? Has anything they've done since January 2007 gotten the economy on track leading to full employment?

How does a so-called journalist go on national television praising the Democrats when their record the last four and a half years has been so atrocious?

With his side lifted to unwarranted heights, it was time to attack the enemy:

If he blows this election, the Tea Partiers and the neocons come roaring back emptying out the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute, erecting statues to Dick Cheney, celebrating the death penalty, elevating torture, ending environmental protection as we know it, breaking unions, punishing gays, starting more wars, and enacting one more giant tax cut for the rich – or worse.

I guess Matthews forgot that Obama hasn't closed the terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay as he promised, has been quite a disappointment to the gay community with the exception of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, has started as many wars as his predecessor, and extended the Bush tax cuts.

But people better vote for Obama next year or the world is going to come to an end.
