ABC Protects Clintons from Trump's 'Low Blow' Attacks

May 8th, 2016 10:16 AM

Since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has turned up the attacks against Hillary Clinton and her husband. “She's married to man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics,” he exclaimed at a recent campaign rally. On Sunday morning, ABC took it upon themselves to play a little defense for Secretary Clinton, while touting her counter punches and omitting key assertions made by Trump.

At his rallies, Trump has been reminding American voters that Bill Clintons lied under oath about having an affair with Monica Lewinski. A lie that resulted in the president being impeached. ABC’s Mary Bruce described Trump’s comments on the issue as a “low blow” to the Clinton’s. Bruce also equated Trump’s comments that the Secretary was “trigger happy” and had a “bad temperament” to low blows as well.

Bruce also touted the counter attacks Clinton had made in retaliation of Trump, referring to it as “sharpening her attacks.” “He doesn't think much of women,” Clinton said at her own rally. She also played up how Clinton has created her own “nickname” for the real estate mogul:

BRUCE: And she’s giving the presumptive nominee a new nickname.

CLINTON: Otherwise called their presumptuous nominee.

As part of the defense of Clintons, ABC omitted a crucial part of Trump’s attacks against them, her involvement in discrediting Bill’s alleged victims. “Hillary was an enabler. And she treated these women horribly,” Trump asserted at his rally, “just remember this. And some of those women were destroyed not by him, but by the way Hillary Clinton treated them after everything went down.”

PAULA FARIS: We want to turn now to politics. And Donald Trump taking aim at both Hillary Clinton and her husband in a no holds barred attack. The candidate also saving some pretty harsh words for party leaders who refuse to endorse him right now. ABC’s Mary Bruce is on the campaign trail in Seattle with more for us this morning. Hi, Mary.

MARY BRUCE: Hi, good morning. Well, now that Donald Trump has all but locked up the nomination, he's looking ahead. Going full steam after the Clintons. Both of them.

DONALD TRUMP: She's married to man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics.

BRUCE: This morning, Donald Trump is going there. Ripping into Hillary Clinton and her husband.

TRUMP: Here's a guy, he was impeached because he lied. He lied. Do you remember the famous, “I did not have sex with that woman.” And then, a couple of months later, I'm guilty. And she's taken negative ads on me.

BRUCE: And the low blows didn't stop there. Trump blasting the former secretary of state's foreign policy credentials.

TRUMP: She's trigger happy. She's got a bad temperament. And by the way, her husband learned that a few times, didn't he?

BRUCE: This, as Hillary Clinton is sharpening her attacks against Trump.

HILLARY CLINTON: He doesn't think much of women, it turns out.

BRUCE: And she’s giving the presumptive nominee a new nickname.

CLINTON: Otherwise called their presumptuous nominee.
