Rose: If Voters Don’t Trust Clinton After a Lifetime in Public Office, How Can One Debate Change Things?

September 26th, 2016 3:37 PM

On Monday’s CBS This Morning, anchor Charlie Rose asked Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook a blunt and straightforward question about the Democratic candidate’s weaknesses, which is a rarity in the morning media world. After Rose asked Mook if Clinton was going to be on the offensive or defensive in the debate, he followed up by asking if there was any way Clinton could improve her record of trustworthiness with voters, in one debate, anyway.

After Mook acknowledged that Clinton “does know that she needs to earn the voters’ trust,” Rose shot back, “Why do you think she can change the trust dynamic in one debate, when, in fact, she hasn’t been able to do it over a lifetime, or in terms of this campaign?”

A perfectly reasonable question, because polls continue to show Clinton isn't viewed as honest or trustworthy among voters. Mook had no real answer to the question of course.

MOOK: The central question of this entire campaign is which one of these candidates is going to fight on the side of everyday people and it actually has plans will make a difference in their lives. Can voters trust a candidate to get that done? And they can absolutely trust Hillary. She has a lifetime record of working with both sides of the aisle, bringing people together and getting real things done.
