ABC Falsely Touts a Liberal Activist As a Pulitzer-winning Journalist

March 27th, 2006 5:04 PM

ABC started off this week's focus on global warming by falsely presenting a liberal journalist and author as a Pulitzer Prize winner.

Former Boston Globe editor and reporter Ross Gelbspan was the centerpiece of Geoff Morrell's March 26 World News Tonight report. Morrell labeled Gelbspan a "Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist." But Gelbspan never won the award, which was given to seven reporters in 1984 for a social issue -- series on race relations in Boston -- not a scientific dispute like climate change.

Gelbspan's publisher and Climate Crisis Coalition, an environmental activist Web site he founded, both describe Gelbspan as a Pulitzer Prize winner, although his personal Web site words the matter more carefully.

UPDATE

: Just hours after Hurricane Katrina struck, Gelbspan tried to capitalize on the tragedy in a Boston Globe op-ed: “The hurricane that struck Louisiana yesterday was nicknamed Katrina by the National Weather Service. Its real name is global warming....Unfortunately, very few people in America know the real name of Hurricane Katrina because the coal and oil industries have spent millions of dollars to keep the public in doubt about the issue.”
