Savannah Guthrie Stumbles Out of the Gates

The very early returns are in for Savannah Guthrie's debut as the new co-anchor at NBC's Today show and so far they're not great. According to TV Newser's Chris Ariens, ABC's Good Morning America beat its morning show competitor in the ratings on Guthrie's first day in the co-anchor chair. Ariens reported that GMA won Monday morning's showdown among both total viewers and younger viewers:

In preliminary fast affiliate numbers for Monday, “Good Morning America” topped “Today” in both Total Viewers and younger viewers. It’s the first time in six years, since February 2006, that “GMA” won a Monday in both ratings measurements.

“GMA” led “Today” by just +6,000 A25-54 viewers (1.680M vs. 1.674M) and a much more decisive +356,000 Total Viewers (4.425M vs. 4.069M). As preliminary numbers go, these are subject to change.

Guthrie replaced Ann Curry after the longtime Today newsreader and Dateline correspondent disappointed in her brief stint in the co-anchor chair alongside Matt Lauer.
