Open Thread: GOP Won't Take Back Senate?

By NB Staff | April 02, 2012 | 11:12

A  A

Today's starter topic: Will the GOP take the Senate this fall? National Review blogger Jim Geraghty thinks that prospect is not as certain as previously thought:

A Republican-controlled Senate in 2012 looks less likely than it did a few weeks ago, but the prospect for GOP gains is still quite solid.

Of the 33 Senate seats up for grabs this cycle, seven are occupied by Democrats or Democrat-leaning independents who are not seeking reelection, three are occupied by Republicans who are not seeking reelection, 16 are occupied by Democrats seeking reelection, and seven are occupied by Republicans seeking reelection. This is the class of senators last elected in 2006, a midterm election that almost could not have gone worse for the GOP.

A few recent developments may indicate good news for Republicans, however. Last week the House voted to repeal the IPAB portion of Obamacare, a 15-member panel that will, beginning in the 2015 fiscal year, make binding recommendations for cost-cutting in Medicare treatment. This is the potentially care-denying, unelected authority that some Republicans characterize as “death panels.” Four House Democrats running for the Senate this cycle — Shelley Berkley of Nevada, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, and Joe Donnelly of Indiana — all voted in support of IPAB. On paper, this represented a risk-free way for these Democrats to distance themselves from one of Obamacare’s more controversial provisions; instead, all four doubled down in support of the least popular part of the law.

This is the year, The issues

Submitted by williars on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 11:31am.

This is the year, The issues and the reign of Obama have given Republicans their best opportunity to take back the Senate. Of course the individual races will be decided by the choice of Republican candidate and the State electorate so it's not a sure thing. If the national Republican establishment, as in Indiana, continues to support dead people like Lugar our chances diminish, and it might take another cycle for real change. The Senate is not the House. But I think the groundswell in favor of conservative/libertarian candidates and policies is unstoppable.

Poor analysis

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 11:40am.

I don't know why certain bloggers are constantly "warning" us about our fate in the November election; maybe they're just trying to keep us energized or scare us into a large turnout, but the only way we don't retake the Senate and the White House, and expand in the House, is if the GOP leadership on all fronts is either woefully incompetent or are in actuality Democratic operatives.

Two messages over and over again should be enough- Obamacare was an unconstitutional power grab meant to take away your personal freedom, and after four years of Obama and six years of Harry Reid, we're at 15 trillion in debt and 8.5% unemployment.

If we lose knowing this, we deserve it.

Many people have been awakened

Submitted by c5then on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 11:53am.

to the results that we see when the liberal democrats are virtually un-restrained. We get Obamacare and no budgets. We get stimulus bills that fail to stimulate anything except the bank accounts of democrat doners. We get a very liberal President who shows open contempt for the Constitution. We get a government picking and choosing which private companies to help out and which to let fail. We get a government trying to force technology down the country's throat that isn't yet ready for the mainstream. And, more importantly, we get a country hoplessly mired in a long drawn out recession (shades of the 1930's) while our freedom and liberty are taken away in the name of "fixing" the economy.

I suspect that there will be many more people who educate themselves before election day. But almost as important, there are a whole group of people, that are more likely to vote for the (R) than ever before just because of their anger, dispair and disgust for the (D)'s.

Renovated Pyongyang Cornstarch Factory Comes on Line

Submitted by celator on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:01pm.

In other world news, the renovated Pyongyang Cornstarch Factory has comes on line in North Korea. We've been waiting for this news a long time, according to the North Korean press.

According to the story: "The renovation helps lay a solid foundation for supplying the Pyongyang citizens with quality confectionery." World peace is not far behind.

"Present there were Choe Yong Rim, premier of the Cabinet, Mun Kyong Dok, chief secretary of the Pyongyang City Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea who doubles as secretary of the WPK Central Committee, and officials concerned."

Now here's government approved news writing at its best. MSM, pay attention!

And why should the Republicans win the Senate . . .

Submitted by Gary Hall on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:08pm.

And why should the Republicans win the Senate . . .

After all, they're not capable in getting the word out to the voters, that:

It was the housing bubble envisioned, created, regulated, and fueled by Clinton, HUD Sec. Andrew Cuomo, and the left-wing caucus that led to the great collapse, in 2008, and resultant recession . .

. . . and that Senator Obama, in late 2007, is on record in supporting that effort.

The main cause of the disappearance of the Clinton era surpluses, and the quick return to massive deficits, was the collapse of dot.com bubble (the Enron bubble), in March, 2000, not the Bush tax stimulus of 2001 and 2003.

That a majority of the public opposed the Obama stimulus plan, as well as hundreds of leading economists.

That a strong majority of Americans have consistently opposed ObamaCare.

That a super majority of Americans supported the details of the Arizona immigration enforcement bill, and that only a tiny minority support Obama's immigration agenda (namely the national media and the radical left).

That Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, have prevented us from having a national budget in place for the past 3 years - since Obama was President.

That the national media has no interest in asking President Obama about that last item there - 'why he says nothing to the nation, here.'

That a strong majority of Americans want a smaller government, doing less, and costing less.

That it was President Obama who refused to endorse - even mention - his own Simpson/Bowles Debt Commission recommendations; even as S & P was warning him [us] of a pending downgrade in our debt rating.

 . . . and they did.

To the Senate Republicans, RNC, etc: Folks, you'd better invoke the Gingrich principal - and speak; the national media is not inclined to defend you on your widely held and populist views.

Conservatism on the rise

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:13pm.

It may be debatable whether holding onto nothing is a disaster. The money for government is gone. I live in Illinois and next door is Wisconsin. Two different states and two different parties. Wisconsin's Republican governor is facing recall because the dems/unions are using necessary budget cuts to their political advantage while in Illinois the democrat governor who is making hurtful cuts to the disabled, schools, local governments and cuts to union held positions but is only facing grumbling by the dem powers and the media.

So it may be a real question as to whether we let obama parachute off of a crashing plane while the Republicans are blamed for the crash that is going to happen. As for me I'm glad that a dem governor is in control of my state and must face the hard facts of life.

Yes I know obama as President can do a lot more damage to this country but the next four years will not be pretty for whoever is President.

Not if Romney is the nominee

Submitted by UncleDirtNap on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:32pm.

Hear me now, believe me later. If Mitt Romney is the nominee as it appears is inevitable not only will the GOP NOT take back the Senate they will lose the House in a landslide as well.

The GOP establishment is in for a horrifically rude awakening this November when they see how many people stay home in rejection of a Romney/anybody ticket.

Every single person I know who talks about politics is of the same mind as I and we are not going to bother casting a vote for the gun grabbing, tax raising, Constitution trampling Republican Marxist over the Democrats' version of the same. Some of us will make what I expect will ultimately futile attempt to vote for acceptable House and Senate candidates while skipping the vote for the top of the ticket but most are just not even going to bother to show up.

The GOP is in for a historic butt kicking with Romney at the top of the ticket, just no way around it.

Arguing with liberals is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are at Chess the pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, crap on the board and strut around like it's victorious.

Something to consider

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 1:53pm.

The last time we had a contested primary with a running incumbent was before NewsBusters existed. That would have been 2004. The last time we had a contested GOP primary with a running incumbent Democrat President was 1996. What we're witnessing is the GOP primary race playing out in all it's nastiness, while the Democratic president who is loved by the media uses his bully-pulpit to blast Republicans in front of adoring, paying crowds. There couldn't be any more of a one-sided condition than we're experiencing now.

How many of us were political junkies and this in tune with what's going on 16 years ago? My guess is very few. So a lot of us are experiencing this seemingly debilitating process play out for the first time. We'll recover. And we'll recover quickly and unify completely around the GOP nominee and we'll put the country back on the path envisioned by the framers.

It's either that or more of the same but with greater emphasis; only the truly misguided would vote for their own punishment. Obama loses in a landslide.

Well, for a Constitutional "professor" (really just a guest speaker), he seems to forget the blindfolded lady. They aren't supposed to consider anything BUT the Constitution, that charter of negatives.

And if he feels that way about the unelected body I guess he's saying Brown vs. The Board of Education and other such decisions were wrong.

In my opinion we now have a society who believe in Santa Claus, only Santa is Uncle Sam and Christmas is every day. In agrarian societies there is no one to look to for wealth but God and hard work. Now unions convince their members that by working eight hours a day and not risking their own capital they are entitled to more than a wage. The workers are entitled to the lions share, if not all, of the profits. The government has encouraged people to think every wrong will be righted and fundametal rights are not basic freedoms, but basic handouts.

Not a happy camper today.

He's so hard to listen to with his "uuhs". Anyway, regardless of the number of the judges, lawyers, and law professors who agree with Obama (or disagree for that matter) it really doesn't matter. What matters is how these nine decide. I imagine some (like Scalia) won't take well to his advising them this way.

The full story

Submitted by ricklail on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 3:32pm.

This morning I posted on another thread about an armed robbery at a convience store in Farmville, NC. about 30 miles from here, where 3 people were murdered. Two of the killers where wearing hoodies. The names have been released of the victims. It appears these were Indian name but can't be sure. One was a HS student. Wonder if we'll hear anything about this from the unreverend Al and Jesse? This was a hate crime in my book.

Thoughts on murder and mayhem...

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 4:17pm.

I've been thinking about the desirability of municipal ordinances or even state legislation which would require any customer or potential customer to remove all head covering--except that which is worn for recognized religious reasons--upon entering a retail establishment.

It would facilitate IDing by security cameras, and a failure to comply would at least alert the proprietor or clerks to the possible malevolent intent of the individual(s) in question.

Of course I also favor universal DNA sampling. I know that notion drives the ACLU crowd and conservative libertarians nuts, but it would without question serve as an invaluable aid in crime prevention and crime solving, and save many lives.

I had unexpected company last night. But since then I've spent a couple of hours reviewing your links, including much of the material at the website you linked, studied the maps, printed out a bunch of stuff, and listened to the 911 tape 7 or 8 times. I'm not going anywhere and neither is this case for awhile. Hang on.

Give me some heads up when you get around to responding. That thread is dropping further and further on my "track" page and I could miss it if another day or so passes. No pressure, I'm just curious to how you'll respond given the number of dots not being connected by the media and how that can sway public opinion; especially when there is information available that's being ignored.

I said on some other threads, a local bank has a sign on the door requesting patrons to remove sunglasses and lower (correct terminology?) before entering citing robbery statistics of bank robbers wearing shades and hoodies.

DNA registration? Not on your life! In addition to crime solving it contains more of my health data than the government has a right to.

between public safety and personal liberty. I certainly don't want to live in a police state, but a comprehensive national DNA data source would be of immense value in reducing crime. I'm sick and tired of murderers being on the streets who could and should be behind bars. It's a trade-off I'm willing to make. I was fingerprinted for the military and I've never felt for one second that it was over-invasive, too intrusive, or gave the government too much information about me.

The military is different

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 4:50pm.

The purpose would be to identify a soldier if he was unrecognizable. Also, we no longer have a draft. When you volunteer to join you are agreeing to their rules. The fact that I live here and have not committed a crime does NOT entitle the government to have my fingerprints or my DNA. It's (to me anyway) the equivalent of the government being able to tap my phones without a warrant just in case I committ a crime.

I don't like criminals not receiving justice, but not at the cost of my privacy.

I understand the primary reason for the military, Rad...

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 5:30pm.

but it's not as if my records were destroyed after I was discharged thirty-five years ago. However, I've never felt threatened or vulnerable as a result.

Look, I appreciate your position on the issue. The ACLU would love to have you as a member. I don't like murderers. But I would rather catch their sorry asses and put them under the jail with the help of DNA profiles, rather than having a 24/7 police roadblock set up on every street in America.

BTW...health insurance carriers know more about your medical history than even you know, and, in some cases, will terminate your coverage because of it. Under ObamaCare, they wouldn't have that option. In case you're interested.

Another issue to agree to disagree on. But the thing about the DNA profile is that it would be done, BEFORE, not after a crime. That's a huge problem for me. But I don't deal with murderer's in my everyday life, and as a lawyer, you might, or have friends that do and I get that.

Yes, I know the evil insurance companies can drop me at any time. Couldn't that be fixed with a law stating something to the effect that once the contract is issued it cannot be cancelled unless there is proof, through testing, that the insured had a condition not revealed to the insurance company?

One of my biggest pet peeves is the information given to insurance companies regarding prescription meds. Here in PA they can look up what I take, and what each doctor in PA prescribes and how much. That bothers me a lot.

Oh, if only I was in charge of the world...

Here's an interesting one: As of Q4/2011, the US Federal Debt was $1.32 per square yard (of the US land area). That's 3 feet by 3 feet, for the geometry-challenged.

Obama campaign using questionable donation tactics again

H/T HotAir. It seems you can donate on barackobama.com with a credit card without having to provide the 3-digit code on the back of the credit card, nor do you have to provide the same name or address listed with the credit card.

I guess when you're desperate for money, you'll take it any way yo can get it.

I think we all better start watching our credit card bills VERY carefully.

A little pet peeve, when I clicked on the link there was a picture of the Obama family and the saying "Help the Obama Family Stand Up for Working Americans". Well if they want to keep the girls out of the limelight, then keep them out of the limelight. This guy wants everything both ways.
