Open Thread: Santorum Says He'd Accept VP Nomination

By NB Staff | March 27, 2012 | 10:37

A  A

Today's starter topic: With his chances of winning the GOP nomination decreasing as time goes by, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum said in an interview that he would accept an offer to be the Republican vice presidential candidate if he were offered it by likely presidential nominee Mitt Romney:

The former senator from Pennsylvania responded “of course,” when David Brody asked him the question during an interview for the Christian Broadcasting Network.

"I mean, look, I would do in this race – as I always say, this is the most important race in our country's history,” Santorum said. “So I'm going to do everything I can.

"I'll do whatever is necessary to help our country," he added.

Santorum won the Louisiana primary on Saturday but now faces an uphill battle as most of the races in the next month are in unfriendly territory. According to an Associated Press analysis, Romney now has more than double his number of delegates.

Romney has given no hint yet as to who he would chose to be his vice-president. Most speculation has centered on Republicans who did not enter the presidential contest such as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said on Sunday that he would be consider it if he was asked.

After claiming that Romney is the worst repub to run on health care, Rick decides that he wouldn't mind running on Romney's ticket.

So much for ethics, eh?

The GOP looks "eff-ed" to me right now, because Rick is right when he says that Mitt is exactly the wrong candidate to run on the health care issue, yet he wouldn't mind running with Mitt.

The dumb-ocrats are going to have a field day with this.

Ok, Rick. You wouldn't mind running as Veep, but after the things you've said about Mitt, what do you think the chances are that you'll actually be asked? Hmmm?

Submitted by Free Stinker on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 10:53am.

If Rmoney does get the nomination, he's going to need a Conservative (like a guy with an ACU rating of 85) on the ticket.

If it comes to him being asked to be VP, should he act like Ron Paul fans and say he's sitting this one out?

Focus everyone! We do the primaries, THEN we worry about the general election.

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 10:58am.

Free, I think he'd be Palin cubed....he'd bring so much excitement to the base it would be insane.

Also, he's like Sarah Palin in that he's fearless, he has no qualms about going after anyone, and speaking the truth without the use of nice subtle nuanced phrases. He calls things by their proper names.

I think a Romney/West ticket would destroy Obama's chances of re-election.

Can you even imagine the first five minutes of a Biden/West debate? ROTFL.

articulate, intelligent, conservative, highly decorated Black man, such as Allen West, to be selected as Vice President on the Republican ticket. I'm specifically referring to the Vice-Presidential Debates that you mentioned between Allen West and the gaffe-prone and inarticulate bungler and White Joe Biden.

I think you would agree that matchup is no where close to fair. Moreover, you know as well as I do that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Obama would bring up the Race card, and protest that the Uncle Tom West is a racist for unfairly attacking a weak, developmentally challenged White liberal. Nevertheless, you and I would be in heaven if we could watch just the first five minutes of a Biden/West debate! Game. Set. Match! I can't wait!

If Santorum's ACU rating of 85 is good, then Gingrich's 90 is better.

I agree that the Primaries should play out.

Santorum will not be asked by Romney to be on the ticket. I don't think Romney will go with a deeply Conservative person unless they can bring another demographic of voters in certain key states. West will not bring enough Black votes to make a difference when trying to capture national votes. Rubio is an easy guess since they are already buddies and the Hispanic vote could put several states into play. A female VP candidate would contribute appeal to women voters. In general, an ethnic minority VP selection would help counteract the bleached white bread Romney image on the national stage.

Whoever is the GOP candidate, it would be the height of selfishness and self destructive behavior for Conservatives to not vote in November because the General Election candidate is not the one they want. The election bedrock is ANYBODY BUT OBAMA, not 'I'll take my ball and go home to teach so-and-so a lesson' if my choice isn't running. I'm sure Romney knows this and is banking on it to capture Conservatives' votes without much more effort on his part.

This election, "holding my nose" is not about voting for a candidate you don't especially like but the act of staying home and pretending not to smell the sewage in the White House another four years as a result of abdicating one's responsibility to vote.

I'm not sure about your premise, strat

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 3:01pm.

That West won't bring enough black votes.

I think he'll bring A LOT of black votes. I've heard many black conservatives say they voted for Obama, against their better judgement, because he's (half) black, much to their regret. They were voting for hope. Charles Payne comes to mind. But what if we gave those voters something to vote FOR, rather than against? Win/win.

Also, a while back, Allen West hosted a black issues conference, which was attended mostly by black conservatives, to begin to address some of the more pressing problems unique to their communities, basically the breakdown of the family and the emergent gansta culture. I believe he would be able to utilize this group, amongst them J.C. Watts, as a core constituency who would draw in a huge amount of votes.

Of course, I prefer to think that West has become such a conservative icon in a few years that he'd excite the base, a la Palin. He's a patriot. And a brawler. He'd give Romney a good foundation for his foreign policy. I've heard questions from the floor thrown at the man, and he can cite facts, figures, GNP's of foreign countries, US aid amounts, military expenditures by service, etc. He's got it all, trust me. Plus, he is truly a genuine guy.

Oh, and I think he'd definitely put Florida in the plus column. I like Rubio, although I find him to be overly cautious, and as some have asserted (but not yet convinced me)....his parents status as being in the process of obtaining their citizenship when he was born may cloud his eligibility. Once was enough.

It's Still A Numbers Game

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 3:35pm.

The vast majority of Black votes will still go to Obama. We are talking about an overwhelming Democrat voting block. Ideologically, nothing has changed for most of this near monolith. They will overwhelmingly stick with Obama. In general, Black Conservatives who voted the race ticket last election will not need race (a Black Republican on the ticket) to vote against Obama this time. Black Conservatives, and Black Republicans barring the Colin Powell's, now understand the folly of Obama and will vote for a Martian Republican candidate based on issues outside of race. Black Democrats will still beat a Black Republican, more so if a Black Conservative, at least that's the vibe I get in my locality. Additionally, West is not running for the Presidency, so Obama as President still trumps even a palatable Black Republican as Vice President let alone an unpalatable White Republican President.

Concerning Rubio, I've long had my doubts about him as a strong Conservative like West. I don't know if he's as squishy as Christie, and I doubt he's as chameleon-like as Romney, but he's softer than I initially thought.

One good thing Rubio could do if he is on the ticket is force the issue of what constitutes a natural born citizen to finally be delineated by SCOTUS if the Left were to raise the issue. That alone would be worth the selection of Rubio as VP. Just as Paul Ryan should have taken one for the team and ran for President, Rubio could help shape the immigration issue for years to come.

All that said, I hope you are right!

Santorum Needs a Real Job

Submitted by powers2be on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 12:10pm.

This guy has been living off the backs of taxpayers far too long. He needs to know what it is like to get a real job and pay real taxes for a decade or so before he will ever be qualified to work at fixing the mess he helped create. We the People need to stop electing professional politicians who believe that government spending is the end all, be all, to the problems that they themselves created to begin with.

Hey Rick...

don't quit your day job just yet, oops I forgot you have never had a day job. Santorum brings nothing to the ticket. His audience won't be voting for B.O.. The South will vote for the GOP candidate. So what does Santorum bring to the ticket? Zilch.

However, you have Gov. Susanna Martinez whose grandparents were from Mexico and she is the Governor from New Mexico. That brings the Southwest and a large block of Hispanics from California plus women in droves from everywhere.

Sen Marco Rubio who has been busy boosting his foreign affairs and armed forces experience and his parents came from Cuba brings Florida, the great prize itself to the ticket. Obama can not win without FL. That is a given. For any stragglers there might be in the conservative wing he will bring those and tea party people.

Last best choice is Sen. Kelly Ayotte from N.H.. Tall, attractive, very good on the stump and she would be a huge draw for women in the nation. She is everymom and her deep inroads in New England will force B. O. to spend money in a part of the nation that he was not planning on expending resources to win.

Those are my three.

Jack

I think Rubio would be wise to stay put and run for Prez in 2016 if Romney loses.

And of course Santorum would accept the nomination, he's got nothing better to do since PA threw him out of office.

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect, and "special" laws and rights
If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.
If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.
If a Republican reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh. A Democrat will delete it because he's "offended".

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he is not a Republican. He is a wuss.
If a Republican is a vegetarian, he will never tell anyone for fear of having his Republican friends laugh at him, especially if he doesn't like guns either.
If a Republican is homosexual, he will remain in the closet, and loudly and piously condemn all other homosexuals to make absolutely sure no one suspects.
If a Republican is down-and-out, he will lay off employees until his balance sheet temporarily improves. Then when his business fails, he will write the loss off on his taxes.
If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he sends the host vicious, obscenity-laden, misspelled, hate-ridden e-mail messages. Anonymously.
If a Republican is a non-believer, he goes to church anyway, because people will talk.
If a Republican decides he needs health care, he gets an insurance plan that provides all the Cialis he wants for free, while uninsured people go bankrupt trying to pay for their heart medication.
If a Republican reads this, he will share it with his friends, who will all enjoy a good laugh. Then they will try to find out who I am and get me fired.
